Overview
Forty years' experience in book publishing--from copyeditor to editor to author and three-time best-selling coauthor--brings a unique perspective. I have been providing editorial services to major New York trade publishers since 1983, when I left my position as the first editor of Rolling Stone Press (the magazine's book division). By 2014, I had cowritten more than 22 books and written two of my own.
And, yes, I'm a copyeditor. Why? Because I love it. It fits my lifestyle and lets me engage with authors and their work. I never open a manuscript without remembering how it felt to have my own examined, queried, corrected, and ultimately improved. Expect both a sharp eye for perfecting the "basics" (sequencing, sense, syntax, spelling, grammar, punctuation, fact-checking, and references) and a generous yet honest exchange about fine-tuning the overarching tone, structure, pacing, and other elements that bring a book to life. I respect deadlines, have a great sense of humor, and am comfortable asking questions and explaining my suggestions. I have strong communication skills, respond quickly, am sensitive to authors (been there!), and have earned a reputation for discretion. Clients have called me "meticulous," "expert," and "patient." Footnotes, endnotes, bibliography, fact checking: no problem! I work easily across nonfiction genres. My list of copyediting projects from 2021 to the present alone includes seven critically acclaimed best-sellers.
