Vicky Richards

Vicky Richards – Editor

Children's non-fiction and fiction editor with specific experience in science content, humour, and graphic novels.

Overview

I am an experienced editor who has worked on a wide range of titles for children aged 8+, ranging from extensive encyclopedias to quirky fact books and graphic novels. I have particular expertise in developing science titles, working to present tricky technical information in a creative way, and helping authors to write fun and engaging text.

I also have an a background as a comedy writer, with credits across BBC radio shows including The Now Show and The News Quiz, and I write regular articles for The Daily Mash. This background in humour lends itself to working on children's fiction and non-fiction, as kids are our most critical readers, and adding a few jokes and a relatable tone of voice can help to draw them into a book. I want to aid authors in making everything that might at first seem dry and factual instead funny and accessible to young readers.

With ten years experience in the publishing industry working at DK books, I also read sample extracts for Penguin Random House development schemes and have been longlisted for awards for my own middle grade writing.

Work experience

DK

Sep, 2015 — Present
During my time at DK, I have pitched, developed, and edited a range of children's titles, focusing specifically on the 8-12 age range. As well as large encyclopedias covering all core curriculum topics, I have also edited fun fact books, and guides to specific topics. I have worked with a wide variety of authors, freelancers, and licensing partners such as the Smithsonian Institution. My expertise spans from developing contents lists in partnership with consultants, to devising unique and informative visual concepts for spreads, and closely editing the final text to ensure a consistent and engaging tone.

How do I write characters that children can relate to?

Child readers are just like adult readers – they want to read about characters that seem alive and three-dimensional. Make sure when telling your story that you aren’t just describing what happens to the characters, but showing their thoughts and feelings throughout the events that take place. ...
