Val Ruiz

Val Ruiz – Editor

Literary Agent, acquiring editor, & author with 10+ years of experience specializing in YA and adult character-driven storytelling.

Overview

"I couldn’t have asked for a better editor. V. thoroughly worked with me through my debut novel with the same enthusiasm that I had while writing it. They helped me understand what could be stronger and explained their edits in detail, never leaving me hanging wondering why a certain edit had been made. I also learned how to better my writing during the process. If I could have one person handle all my manuscripts for the rest of my author career, it would be V.!"

Piper L. White - Author of All (Dead) Girls Lie

***Please note:

--I do not work on AI-generated projects.

--I am currently booking for July/August return dates.

--I do not take on paid editorial work (aside from query letter reviews) from a client if I believe I may wish to represent them. Working with me in any editorial capacity does not increase your chances of finding representation with me or my agency.

ABOUT ME

With over 10 years in editorial experience, I bring a strong background to every project I take on. I am also a literary agent with D4EO Literary Agency. Most recently, I worked as Publisher, and the Editorial & Project Manager at Row House (distributed by Simon & Schuster). There I edited titles, oversaw acquisitions, handled production schedules, and assisted with marketing and design.

My editorial process is solutions-oriented and structured. My goal is to help you strengthen your manuscript without compromising what makes it yours. I specialize in character-driven fiction, particularly in YA, romance (with a focus on Queer love stories), and fantasy with strong emotional arcs. With a background in poetry, I’m especially drawn to projects with lyrical language, interiority, and voice-forward storytelling.

I'm a published poet—IN STORIES WE THUNDER debuted with Sundress Publications, and my debut novel, THE MISFIT WITCHES OF MARIGOLD ISLAND is debuting in 2027 with Bindery Books.

Testimonials:

V.'s work on Sink Or Burn was thoughtful, insightful, and transformative. While doing the necessary task of reading, editing, and recalibrating ideas, V. considered the heart of the story as much as they considered the structure. . . . V's exceptional attention to detail made room for both the original vision, and a universal story.

--Cristy Road Carrera (Author, illustrator, Next World Tarot, Sink Or Burn)

During our work together on edits, V. provided excellent advice on many levels, helping me improve the manuscript while ensuring my vision was respected. Dialogues, tone of the book, romantic elements, foreshadowing, and the writing itself: V. provided a comprehensive line edit that not only improved the prose but also ensured the different elements of the book were cohesive. Overall, it was a pleasure working with V. and I hope to work with them again in the future.

I worked with V on a query package consultation. At the time, I had thirty rejections and one full request. The very first reply after I integrated V's feedback was a full request from a dream agent—someone I never thought I'd even have a chance with. The pricing was extremely reasonable (if anyt...

Working with Val was nice. She gave feedback for everything. I really like how she took a look at my query letter, manuscript, and synopsis to see how they align, and if they work contrary to one another. She was also done in a timely manner, and she answered my questions. I will work with her ag...

What are the signs that the middle of my story isn't working?

People tend to rush through the middle because the beginning and ends is more exciting to focus on haha. We can often see signs of this if it feels as though there's either a lot of recap or constant going from scene to scene (this happened, then this, then this). We still want tension and emot...

What are the most common formatting mistakes authors make when submitting children's manuscripts, and how can they be avoided?

It depends on the end-goal of the manuscript. One issue I see frequently is that many picture book authors think they need to have an illustrator before reaching out to an agent or publisher. You do NOT need an illustrator for either of those. The second note I have is that I see too many illus...

What factors contribute to the success of self-published authors in the romance genre?

I think the most successful self-published or indie authors in romance have or consider the following: They read widely in the genre and take in just as much as they are putting out. They don't only read their genres, but they actively learn from other genres and writers. They rework the manus...
