Tom Witcomb – Editor

Collaboration, support, honesty, value. 15+ years as Big 5 editor/coach/agent/ghostwriter. Passionate about refining your voice & vision.

Overview

As an editor, literary agent and ghost-writer I bring a unique set of perspectives from across the publishing spectrum which has gifted me the ability not only to see what makes a story tick, but how a project works on a commercial level.

I love working on novels at every stage of development and will work with you to develop a bespoke package tailored to your specific needs.

I can be there every step of the way: I can help you refine an idea and develop an action plan for getting your first draft nailed; then, either through mentoring, manuscript assessment or developmental editing (or a combination of everything!) we can plan your next moves. If you're at initial assessment phase, with a first draft in hand, we can work on where to go next. I can roll up my sleeves and get stuck into a deep-dive developmental edit, delivering a marked up manuscript with line edits and margin notes. If you're ready to pitch to agents, I can help hone your covering letter and sample material, ensuring you're putting your best foot forward. In my many years working at a leading agency, I've read my fair share of submission letters and I know exactly what's needed to stand out from the crowd!

Whichever way you cut it, each service will help you hone your writing and storytelling skills, creating the best book you can and getting it one step closer to publication whether that be traditionally, or by self-publishing.

What's really valuable, and something I absolutely love to be able to offer, is a follow up call after the work's been delivered, in order to clarify any points, and to brainstorm next steps with you so you feel empowered to take the next steps. Editorial advice in a vacuum is not worth it - I take a very collaborative approach to editorial work, in order to extract maximum value for you.

I fundamentally believe that honesty is the best approach to editorial work, as well as treating authors with the utmost respect and I take great pride in not only my candour, but also my desire and ability to be constructive with it. I will never just tell you something doesn't work out of hand, but will accompany it with solutions. I love bouncing around ideas and helping authors finding the solutions to their problems. It's about empowering you to write the best book you can, not about doing what I say. My primary objective is to help you reach a place where you’re writing your best work, and I love forging lifelong relationships with authors.

If you’re planning on self-publishing, I can provide guidance through the self-publishing process — from proofreading and typesetting your manuscript, to reaching readers and finessing your metadata and pricing.

There's a lot to consider, and a lot to take in. Don't worry if you don't quite know what you want yet: get in touch and we can tailor the best approach for you.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jul, 2020 — Present

After working in international publishing for over a decade as a literary agent at Blake Friedmann and then as a commissioning editor at Orion Publishing Group, Tom now works as an editorial consultant offering a range of services and helping writers across the world achieve their goals.

He loves every opportunity to work with new authors and cater to their individual needs and can tailor packages to fit everyone. His real passion is editorial and development work - helping workshop projects, but also working projects up from first draft or from the seed of an idea and helping authors achieve their goals, making their manuscripts the best they can be.

Orion Publishing Group

Jan, 2020 — Jul, 2020 (6 months)

I worked with a range of commercial crime, thriller and historical authors.

Jericho Writers

May, 2019 — Present

I aid a rolling roster of authors who are all at different stages of their novels. I offer guidance and advice as well as more hands-on workshopping of their stories. It's a custom fit experience, and depends on what each individual needs.

Blake Friedmann

May, 2009 — Dec, 2019 (over 10 years)

I represented a range of authors, with a particular focus on upmarket and commercial crime/thriller fiction, as well as working with historical fiction and literary fiction authors.

I was deeply involved with editing each manuscript that I represented - at both developmental and copy-editing level. Some of these I took on as submission drafts and worked with the author to polish their prose ready for an editor to buy, and some I worked on from the outset - helping an author work up the seed of an idea to fully realised novel.

Tom's work ethic and commitment to developing a story has far surpassed my expectations. I've worked with a developmental editor in the past and it was a very brief experience. I received a document showing what I should improve and that was it. With Tom, we met on multiple occasions via video chat and discussed the details of my story at length. He worked diligently on the editing aspect and w...

Tom surpassed any expectations I had coming into the editing process. As a first time author, I needed trusted guidance on many levels - from the big picture concept of the book to the minor details. He not only identified the points in the manuscript that needed improvement, but offered actionable ideas and solutions throughout. The result is a book that is an order of magnitude better now tha...

Working with Tom was an enlightening experience. He offered wonderful thoughts and feedback throughout the process and truly knows his stuff when it comes to editing. He gave me the perspective I was looking for, and helped me reposition the direction of my story in exactly the way I needed to bring me one step closer to a finished version of the tale I am trying to tell.

I've worked with Tom now on 2 forms of edits. Firstly a developmental edit which Tom delivered professionally and quickly, then a copy edit up to the same standards as the first. Working with Tom has been a pleasure in both instances and I wouldn't hesitate to use him again for further books!

I can't say enough good things about working with Tom. As a first-time novelist, I was nervous about sharing my manuscript, but Tom created an environment where I felt both supported and challenged to grow. His feedback was refreshingly honest - he didn't shy away from pointing out areas that needed work, but he always did so constructively, offering specific suggestions and examples for improv...
