Tess Jolly

Tess Jolly – Editor

Friendly and sensitive editor specialising in self-development, wellbeing and mental health, women's narratives, and memoir.

Overview

I am a freelance copyeditor and proofreader with five years' experience providing high-quality services to publishers and independent authors. I am passionate about the power of language to inspire both reader and writer and love supporting authors on their journeys of bringing their stories to the world.

Being both an editor and a poet, I have developed the ability to focus on the nitty-gritty of a manuscript while also being attentive to the nuance and lyricism of the language and how an author's words will look on the page. I will work with you to build a relationship based on trust to ensure a positive and successful outcome.

I understand how nerve-wracking it can be to hand your work over to an editor and I pride myself on my sensitive, kind and supportive approach. This is reflected in the following recent testimonials I have received for my work:

'You've done a FANTASTIC job of finding all the errors and things I missed. I've felt in such safe hands with you. Thank you for making my first copy editing experience so supportive.'

'It was a joy to work with someone so thorough and with such a keen eye for detail. It's hard to overstate the massive difference that good copyediting can make to a book, and I couldn't have been happier with Tess's editing. Her deep knowledge of self-help and mental health meant that she was able to highlight places where I needed to use more sensitive language, and she found errors and inconsistencies that I'd failed to pick up. I was left feeling that Tess genuinely cared about my book. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for a copyeditor.'

'From start to finish, Tess was a pleasure to work with. She was efficient and reliable, and approached my quite complex text with skill and sensitivity, making significant improvements to readability.'

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2021 — Present
Combining my natural flair for language with high-quality editorial training, I help authors make sure their phrasing is as clear as it can be, their spelling, punctuation and grammar are accurate, their document looks tidy, and the narrative is watertight. I am comfortable editing in both UK and US English, on Word or PDFs.
