The wet kelp in her hair was always a bother to her. The way it felt and the odd smell would forever make her feel disgusted at herself.
And being the monster she was, a Kelpie, she was destined to be disgusting. A monster with no empathy. No remorse for what she was made to do. The pain she caused and the innocent woman and children she had to kill.
Except, Maeve was different. She did feel empathy. She had always feel guilty and wrong for her murderous actions. The pain she caused, broke her on the inside. Her heart becoming even more shattered as she committed theses wrong doings.
Committed the murders.
Maeve was only 16, with a very high number of victims who were never found. Families who were never seen again. Victims who suffocated in the water; burning their lungs, filling them until their breathing became a struggle. Until they had passed on.
She didn't want to be who she was. She couldn't. So, that's when she decided to put her fate into her own hands. No more death. No more murdering innocent lives of precious people. She was done.
Everyone had gone into a deep slumber before she decided to run. Run and never return. She couldn't go back. Ever.
She ran in her horse form, so she could have more stamina. She ran into a dense cold forest.
She then saw the light of a fire. But stayed away for a second. Returning to her girl human form, she approached the fire and the people surrounding it.
One of them gasped. A girl. About her age maybe a year older.
"Oh my! Are you okay?"
"No." She said in a hoarse voice, it's been awhile since she said anything out loud.
"What happened to you. Are you alone?" The girl genuinely sounded concerned.
"Yeah. I'm alone. I'm an orphan...Ran from an orphanage, where they'd weren't very kind " Maeve had to lie. She couldn't risk telling her the truth.
The girl looks at Maeve's hair, were you in water?"
"Huh? Yeah. I ran through a lake that's why I have this in my hair." She picked the kelp out one by one.
"I see."
"Here. Join us." The girl smiled, patting the spot next to her.
Maeve reluctantly sat next to her. A boy smiled and said, "Hello. What is your name, beautiful?"
Maeve looked flabbergasted at the comment of "beautiful". His face flushed a color of pink. She realized...he liked her? She didn't recepiocate the same towards him. She realized she had never felt that way before. Towards anyone except someone she once adored. He waited for an answer.
"Maeve." She finally said.
"That's a beautiful name, Maeve."
The girl who asked her to sit laughed softly,
"Jake stop flirting with her. Maeve don't mind my brother."
"What? I can appreciate beauty! You always get to with g-!"
The girl blushes, "Shut up." She says covering his mouth.
Jake laughed, "Okay okay! Sorry Enid."
Maeve noticed Jake's fancy clothes. And asked,
"What are you wearing?"
"My prince clothes."
Maeve's eyes widened, "You guys are Royalty?"
"Yup!" Said, Enid.
Maeve looked guilty. Enid frowned and asked,
"What's wrong?"
"It's just...I feel bad. People like you shouldn't be...nice to me. I look like a hobo! A homeless person."
"We aren't judgemental, Maeve. I promise." Enid smiled.
Maeve thought to herself, 'Only if you knew what I used to do. What I did... you'd hate me. Have me beheaded or hung!'
Maeve had a look of doubt in her eyes. Which made Enid promise again. Maeve smiled.
The darkness outside got darker, Maeve yawned, "I should get going."
Enid laughed, "Oh heck no! You're homeless, We aren't letting you out there. You're coming with us. In the morning we all leave."
"R-Really? Where to?" Maeve looked hopeful.
"Our kingdom silly!"
"No no...I don't want to be a bother to them..."
Enid sighed, "You won't. Please come with us. We can give you a proper home."
"T-Thank you..." Maeve's voice barely audible.
"No problem!" Enid smiled.
Almost everyone settled in their tents. Enid looked at Maeve.
"If you think you are sleeping out here, then you're wrong. It's too cold."
"Huh?"
"I'm not allowing you to sleep out here."
"W-Where do I sleep then?"
"In my tent! I have an extra sleeping bag you can use."
"Thank you!"
"No need to thank me."
Everybody slowly drifted off to sleep, Maeve Wondering if the monster within her will ever truly fade away.
