Throughout the evening, the persistent and rhythmic hum of the Cummings engine would typically be sufficient to lull virtually anyone into slumber under ordinary circumstances. However, on this particular night, Tim's exhausted body was acutely aware of every single piston firing and moving in perfect synchronization. Having already traversed five hundred grueling miles this day, he still faced another four hundred and fifty miles stretching ahead of him before reaching his destination. Furthermore, according to the electronic logging device mounted in his cab, he was rapidly approaching the legal limit of his allowable driving time for the current day.
Meanwhile, as his vision began to blur and his eyelids grew heavier by the minute, Tim spotted a welcoming highway sign that read 'Rest stop, one mile,' an encouraging sight for his increasingly tired, drooping eyes.
Engaging the air brakes with deliberate precision, he settled himself back into the cushioned comfort of his seat, his weathered hands moving across his face in a gesture of deep fatigue and contemplation. The inviting bunk bed behind him in the cab seemed to beckon with an almost irresistible pull, its presence growing more prominent in his thoughts by the moment. After making a necessary stop at the restroom facilities to attend to his personal needs, he fully intended to give in completely to the magnetic draw of that waiting bed, allowing himself the rest and restoration his exhausted body so desperately required.
After completing his bathroom business, Tim washed his hands and face thoroughly. As he dried his face with a paper towel, the profound silence of his surroundings suddenly struck him with unexpected force. At that moment, Tim realized for the first time that he had not seen anyone outside the restroom during his entire visit. No other cars or trucks were visible in the parking lot. Indeed, the eerie silence that surrounded him was absolutely deafening.
He placed the paper towels into the waste receptacle and then moved forward to leave the bathroom. Tim walked through the exit door, only to discover an extended corridor that he hadn't recalled traversing when he originally came to access the restroom.
Tim walked down the corridor and found a ninety-degree left turn at the end. He continued and discovered another left turn at the end of this second corridor. He reached the end and spotted the door, the same door where he had entered the restroom before.
Tim stepped back into the identical bathroom he had left just moments earlier. The lighting started to flicker and dance, projecting eerie, unusual shadowy silhouettes across the wall. These shadows seemed to depict figures contorted into bizarre, disturbing, physically distorted shapes.
Swiftly, he made his exit from the bathroom yet again, only to discover that he now found himself standing in a cave illuminated by torches positioned along the walls. Deep within the cave, extending far beyond what he could see, he heard his sister's voice screaming desperately for help. Subsequently, Tim began to run towards the sound. As a result, he emerged into a small room that bore a striking resemblance to a tree house he and his sisters had once built together in childhood.
Sunlight filtered through the wooden slats of the tree house, casting soft patterns across the small space. A gentle breeze drifted past. Tim caught the familiar scent of his sister, and then the 4 X 8 room went dark. In one corner, a projection flickered to life: his twelve-year-old sister, curled in the fetal position. He turned away as memories rushed back, overwhelming him.
On the back wall stood a doorway, its door missing. Pitch darkness lay beyond the opening. Tim turned his head away from his sister, crumpled in the corner, and stepped through. He didn't know what came next, only that he had to escape this room.
Reluctant and uncertain, he stood at the threshold of that engulfing darkness when suddenly, a forceful push came from behind, catching him completely off guard. Down he tumbled, plummeting roughly five feet before landing hard against something surprisingly soft and cushioned beneath him. Surrounded still by that impenetrable darkness, his hands reached out tentatively, searching and exploring. Whatever surface had broken his fall felt oddly cushioned and yielding to the touch, yet unmistakably damp and slick.
Tim's hands flailed instinctively as the platform crumbled beneath him. He plummeted down a cylindrical steel chute, falling roughly twenty to thirty feet before sliding into a brightly lit chamber illuminated by fluorescent panels. A mirror stretched across the wall to his right. As Tim rose to his feet, he noticed his pants, arms, and hands were smeared with a crimson substance that resembled blood.
Stretching out before him was a grand staircase that ascended upward into the distance. As he progressed, he made his way steadily to the top of the stairs. Upon arrival, two particularly elegant wooden doors stood before him. Subsequently, he pushed one of the doors open and stepped across the threshold into a courtroom. Immediately, an imposing bailiff suddenly seized his arm and swiftly escorted him before the judge.
The judge looked over the rim of his glasses.
"Tim Moore, you are hereby sentenced to death for the killing of your sister. Do you have any final words?"
"My sister's death? I have no idea what you're talking about. She is not dead."
The judge pointed a finger at Tim.
"Your bloodstained pants and arms tell a different story. Take him away."
The court officer firmly seized Tim's arm and yanked him through a concealed side entrance. They proceeded down a short corridor to another door, which the officer unlocked with a key. He was shoved forcefully into a compact four-by-eight padded chamber. The entire space, walls, ceiling, and floor, was heavily padded. The silence and isolation grew increasingly unbearable and suffocating. Tim drifted off to sleep.
Tim's cell phone suddenly rang out at 7 am sharp, pulling him from sleep. He jolted upright abruptly in his truck's cab bunk, disoriented and groggy. By the time he checked the display, the call had already ended; it was his sister trying to reach him. He glanced curiously out the front window, taking in his surroundings. His truck sat completely alone in the rest area, isolated and solitary. No other vehicles were visible, and no other people were around either. The rest stop itself looked remarkably brand new, appearing pristine, untouched, and almost eerily quiet.
He pulled himself together and exited the cab to stretch his limbs. The quiet was undeniable. Not a single bird chirped, no cars traveled along the highway, merely an intense, pervasive stillness. Across the landscape, the heavens showcased predominantly azure tones with a warm, amber radiance at the edges in every direction. Well past 7 am now, the atmosphere felt dense, not because of moisture, but from the intense, suffocating heat.
Tim struggled to assemble any coherent understanding of the events that had unfolded over the previous several hours. A quick examination of his watch gave him pause; the calendar display had mysteriously advanced three full months beyond the date from when he'd originally arrived at the rest stop. He reached for his cellular phone, desperate for clarification or explanation, but found no wireless carrier signal. The most recent incoming call history indicated that his sister had attempted to contact him at 7 o'clock, though the telephone number itself was deeply troubling and entirely nonsensical: 666-6666. He remained unable to make sense of this contradiction; in what way could he have possibly received an incoming call at 7 o'clock when he possessed absolutely no service connection whatsoever?
Tim climbed back into his cab, resolved and steadfast in his determination to depart. He started the truck's engine and transitioned smoothly into gear. As he eased off the brakes and the vehicle inched ahead, the truck lurched forward and stopped after only five feet, as though some unseen, intangible force had brought it to a halt. He shifted it into reverse, yet the truck stubbornly refused to move or budge even slightly.
Then, emanating from the depths of the interior speakers mounted throughout his truck, a profoundly resonant and exuberant voice commenced with laughter that filled the cabin. This was then accompanied by a chilling declaration that reverberated through the air:
"You are unable to depart from this place; you will find yourself perpetually bound here, as your very essence and spirit now belong to me throughout all of eternity."
Tim found himself recognizing the unmistakable vocal tones of this unsettling statement as belonging to his younger sister, someone who had passed away during his childhood years. Throughout his life, his family members had consistently refused to disclose the specific circumstances surrounding her death. Yet, Tim harbored persistent suspicions that the tragic event was somehow mysteriously connected to his own actions or presence.
