DO YOU REMEMBER HIM? A POLICE NOTIFICATION AND MEMORIES COME BACK

Black Crime Suspense

Written in response to: "Write a story about someone who gets lost or left behind." as part of From the Ashes with Michael McConnell.

On March 6, 2026, a notification from the state police arrived at the apartment in Centocelle, in a small and quiet street close to the main street of Via Castani. Via degli Olivi was a strange one that went rather unnoticed even by local petty crime.

A notification of a trial charge on charges of battery. The protagonist of this story is a former roommate, usufructuary of the apartment in Rome and who worked from home earning unfortunately too little.

-From victim of beatings and injuries and theft of keys to defendant? - thought the protagonist.

On March 5, 2026, the state police called her:

-Good morning madam, are you home? I need to bring you a notification, do you have a lawyer? – the policeman told her

-No, I don't have a lawyer or rather I have one but I don't trust him and then he doesn't come to Rome so I prefer that you choose him and give me a lawyer who also does free legal aid, please.

"All right, we can come tomorrow morning if you want," said the policeman

-Of course, I work from home so you can definitely find me at home- said the usufructuary

The next day, around nine o'clock, two plainclothes policemen showed up to bring a six-page notice in which they gave themselves twenty days to request the filing and deposit material in his defense through his lawyer. But let's take a step back.

In 2025 he had rented a room in his apartment to an Iranian student, Mohammad Baghertbarnaghibi, a student at the private Luiss University in Rome.

The student had responded to an ad on Idealista, a platform used in Italy, Spain, Portugal for renting apartments and they had signed a transitional lease that did not give the right to take up residence but only the domicile. From the beginning he had him registered with the national tenants' association SUNIA which had registered the contract with the Rome revenue agency. The contract provided for the start of the contract on February 15, 2025 and the end of the contract after one year, but the student sent a registered letter dated April 16, 2025 without an envelope asking to terminate the contract on July 31, 2025.

By mutual agreement, the tenants' association was informed, although it must be said that for the months the student had created all kinds of problems for the person who had rented him the room, continuously creating problems on the payment of the condominium installment for March 2025 and May 2025 which had to be divided by three people (since the girl who had rented him the room had rented the room with a sofa bed and bridge wardrobe to a other worker from 1 March to 30 June 2025). The condominium installment of 275 euros had to be divided by three and the boy created problems and questions and questions right from the start. Although the girl had tried to help him from the beginning for the bureaucratic part (spid, tax code, domicile request and compilation of the yellow kit to apply for a residence permit) sacrificing her free time and work to take care of him, her kindness and goodness and her good faith were mistaken for something else.

The Iranian boy who burned himself in June from too much sun also on June 6 and remained locked in his room for several days until June 16, 2025 the girl called the ambulance and convinced him to go to the hospital to have his sunburn certified. He explained to him how the codes worked in the hospital according to the level of urgency and what was the difference between the after sun and sunscreen and then accompanied him to the pharmacy to take an anti-inflammatory.

On July 1, 2025, a disaster happened. A boy who, not caring about the damage already caused to the door of the room due to a coat rack hanging from the door that he always morbidly locked every time he left the room, was arrested on July 1st.

In the morning his roommate had reported him to the police for injuries showing the marks on his legs and bruises. On July 1st, at the umpteenth insistence of Baghernabarghibi not to pay the whole month of July and insist on paying half of 231 euros saying that he would come out on the thirty-first and since he always paid on the 15th of the month, his roommate got tired and asked him for the keys back, saying that he would not be free with her and that he would have to respect the rental contract and leaving early he would not have been entitled to the two deposits since the contract was to be concluded on the thirty-first and the bills would have arrived in July to be divided by three. The boy had followed her by the carabinieri but she had taken a taxi, she had gone to the police and reported him, upon returning to the apartment the boy looked at her suspiciously and began to attack her and she defended herself and in an attempt to take back the keys to the room and the apartment he violently pushed her against the corner of the closet and scratched her arm. But the worst happened when she tried to snatch the key to the room: he violently pushed down her thumb bone and was forced to call the carabinieri.

The carabinieri intervened and she showed the complaint, the contract, pointing out that she did not have a residence permit and that she insisted on leaving for Erasmus in Germany even though she did not yet have an Italian residence permit. The carabinieri took him away to take his fingerprints, gave her back the key to the room and advised her to get a report and the girl left in an ambulance. When she returned at 2 a.m. she found the room empty and her roommate had disappeared with the keys to the apartment, so on July 2, 2025, she was forced to report him again for beatings and theft of keys and in an attempt to get the keys back she sent a few emails to the university office to ask where she was and remember that she had left the apartment, then asked if they could contact him to return the keys, reminding her that she was without permission to Italian stay therefore could not leave for Germany. On July 4, 2025, a certain lawyer Evangelisti (who later turned out to be Cristiano De Silvestris), a friend of Baghernabarghibi, told him that he was a lawyer and left her a cell phone number, begging her to contact him.

Her courtesy and kindness towards that boy he had rented and who managed to solve the damage only because the girl accompanied him to a DIY store to buy products to fill the door and repaint it.

which he had rented and which was solved because the girl accompanied him to a DIY shop to buy products to fill the door and repaint it,
