Thirty Five Years After Dinner

Contemporary Fiction Drama

The white tablecloth at Prime Cut restaurant felt smothering. Company protocol mandated a five-course, ultra-caloric intake one hour prior to extraction—a sterile precaution masked as five-star hospitality to ensure the donor’s cellular density didn't crash during the transfer.

Across the candlelit table, Constance dabbed a napkin to her thin lips, dripping in legacy diamonds and watching Kendra chew with open disgust. Every rich, buttery forkful of risotto tasted heavy in Kendra's throat, a bitter reminder that this five-hundred-dollar plate, paid for by Constance's bottomless cash flow ,was the final meal of her thirties. At the corner of the dining room, a suited clinical proctor monitored his tablet, nodding each time Kendra swallowed.

The procedural attaché’s device blinked green, indicating that the mandatory calories had been logged and her metabolic numbers met the threshold. Constance dropped her utensils onto the table with a self-satisfied snap, smoothing the front of her pure chinchilla fur as she stood, and clearly didn't care about the court-mandated restitution clause hanging over Kendra's family. Here, in the town of Meridian Heights, next of kin inherited the legal consequences of deceased loved ones—leaving citizens with a grim, binary choice: serve a thirty-five-year prison sentence or sell their youth to clear the ledger.

To Constance, Kendra was just an impoverished loophole with a pulse. The handler nodded with approval and motioned for both to proceed into the treatment wing.

Rising from the table, Kendra adjusted her posture out of sheer habit, maintaining the discipline of someone who never missed a morning workout or a balanced meal of fresh garden greens. She always kept herself meticulously structured and record clean. Yet, vigor and responsibility were precisely what made Kendra's biological currency so appetizing to investors. Many buyers wanted Kendra but Constance won the bid. As the transporters motioned toward the infirmary, Kendra’s entire body ached with a feeling of disbelief.

Constance walked toward the displacement room with the effortless grace of someone who had never once worried about an audit, court summons, or empty pantry. To her, this office was simply a high-end rejuvenation clinic. She had spent the last eighty-four years wrapped in privilege, her skin softened by decades of luxury treatments and expensive moisturizers, treating human lifetimes like interchangeable commodities. As the Monitoring Agent unlatched the door, Constance flashed a hollow grin, entirely blind to the tragic weight of the essence she was about to consume.

This benefactor didn't even look back as she approached the glass doors of the extraction wing. The monitoring agent Keyed in a security code followed by a light buzz, gesturing for them to enter the suite. Inside, the air smelled like rubbing alcohol and disinfectant. As the attendant stepped forward to collect their coats and personal items, Kendra decided to hold on to her glittered pink hair clip, refusing them to strip away the last piece of who she was as this procedure was irreversible.

Twin polyester and-chrome recliners waited beneath dark, monitoring screens. Constance settled in her chair with an eager sigh, picking invisible lint from a silk shirt, while Kendra reluctantly sank into hers.

A technician with the name tag Jevin stepped forward, wheeling over a sleek cart laden with pre gelled electrodes &, neural-link cables. Given he had done this type of transmission many times before, it seemed as though Jevin’s moves were going 100 miles an hour. He began taping the monitoring pads to Kendra’s and Constance’s temples.

Jevin flicked the master toggle, and intense growls vibrated through the console. Instantly, an amber luminescence powered on within the tubes, lyrically pulsing as Kendra's vitality was drained. The light surged down the line. Kendra grew pale while Constance was beginning to age backwards. Their entire lives were changing in a terrifying and satisfying gleam. Jevin powered down the control panel with a definitive click, sliding the biometric synapse from both patient’s skin as the ducts faded to flat beeps indicating completion. Across the aisle, Constance let out an ecstatic laugh, as she touched a face that was suddenly smooth, and tight. Without a backward glance at the shivering donor, Constance looked at the reflective image on her black phone screen, completely amazed. Both ladies were escorted out to the lobby for finalization signatures.

Outside in the cool evening air, Kendra’s husband, Seth was already waiting by the curb, his headlights shining through the dark as he opened the passenger door to guide his exhausted wife home. Meanwhile, Constance waited by the concierge and thumbed her rideshare app to secure a luxury vehicle.

After the facility automatic doors slid shut behind her, Kendra climbed into the front seat, feeling extremely weary. Seth’s face was that of concern and awe. Most importantly, he wanted to make sure his wife was ok before she arrived home to their kids.

Across town, Constance sat in back of the plush leather interior of an extravagant SUV. The vehicle glided silently through the upscale district toward her gated community. She pulled a compact mirror out of her purse, completely intoxicated by the renewed decades of life that ran through her veins.

Although the exchange took only one day, Constance felt like it had been much longer. As the iron entry gates swung open, she looked around with new, clear sight, able to see colors again and everything appeared to have so much detail.

When the SUV rolled to a halt in her circular driveway, she pushed the door open and stepped out onto the stone path without a single word or glance back at the driver;allowing him to pull away without even the slightest show of appreciation as she vanished inside her silent mansion.

Walking through the marble foyer, every step of her heels echoed against the high ceilings. However, the true shock wasn't the quiet—it was the specifics within the home. Her newly restored vision illuminated the details she hadn't realized were missing; intricate gold leaf flaking off the crown molding, microscopic dust motes suspended in the moonlight cutting through the bay windows, and vibrant, crimson of the roses in the hallway vase. Everything was crystalline, loud, and alive.

She took off her pumps before going up the sweeping staircase barefoot. Standing before the cheval glass, Constance finally was able see her entire new figure. She smiled while doing a 180 degree slow turn. Constance wasn’t only smiling at the healthier body, but at believing this was another tool to help her stay ahead in every way.

Miles away from million-dollar homes, familiar streets welcomed Kendra and Seth back into their quiet, suburban neighborhood.

Upon pulling into the driveway, Kendra admitted she didn’t even have the courage to look at herself in the facility’s complimentary speculum. He turned to Kendra, his hand giving hers a reassuring squeeze. "You don't need to," "I already know who’s sitting next to me. Time might move forward, but you're still just as beautiful to me as the day we married 10 years ago. They both entered the house. Kendra let out a strong exhale as she looked around and Seth answered her unspoken question without even being asked.” It’s Thursday, honey remember the kids are at practice.”

On the other side of town, Constance had no school sports to manage, other voices to look forward to hearing or loving support. She had pushed everyone away with her cutthroat mentality, including a late husband, Thomas. Tom was a gentle man who had spent decades trying to soften her sharp edges before passing away and leaving her with nothing but an immaculate estate and abundant wealth. Constance was able to walk about with no joint aches and due to a better sugar tolerance, made herself a caramel rich macchiato.

Nevertheless, as she set her glass down on the 24-karat golden trimmed coaster, her eyes caught a thick, official envelope sitting on the table in the veranda dropped off by a process server while she was at the clinic.

She ripped open the seal. It wasn't just a notice; it was a total asset seizure and fraud injunction filed by Thomas’ son, citing decades of financial manipulation. The enforcement date was locked in, giving her precisely thirty-five days before every dollar, diamond, and square inch of her gilded fortress was legally stripped away. Constance stood completely frozen in the dark, her newly restored face now flush.

Back in the suburbs, Seth gave Kendra a gentle parting smile and headed out to pick up the children reminding her that a warm pot of homemade soup was already finished in the slow cooker so she could have something comforting to eat. He asked several times if she'd be ok staying home alone for a bit. He was finally convinced and left. Kendra was shocked how long it had taken just to walk into the open kitchen. When reaching for saltine crackers, she had caught a glimpse of herself in the window. Tracing newly gray hair with arthritic fingers bought tears to her eyes. After the initial visual astonishment, Kendra realized she couldn't taste, see or feel like before.Despite losing some senses, she wiped away a stray tear, and snapped that glittery clip into her hair.Kendra was scooping broth into her bowl just as the familiar crunch of gravel signaled the family van pulling into the driveway.
