"Get In and Get Out"

Written in response to: "Let a small act of kindness unintentionally trigger chaos or destruction."

Drama Fiction Funny

Black Friday was approaching soon and I wanted to make sure that I would catch the "Early Bird Sales." So, I got up two hours early, to get ready. The department stores were going to be crowded and chaotic, therefore I knew I had to be prepared. So, I went to the kitchen and grabbed a muffin and a cup of coffee. I threw on a jacket and hat along with some sunglasses. Off I went, into the strong wind of fall, blowing me to the car. I was ready!

My intention were to be in and out as fast as I could. I kept saying, "I know what I plan to buy, so this shouldn't take long." But on the way to the car, I realize that I had left my keys. "Foolish of me!" I said. How was I going to get there without my keys. So, I turned around and went back inside. On the way back inside, I saw that I had also left my purse. "Dog on!" I said. How on earth was I going to purchase anything without my purse. I realize that everything was going to fast and I needed to slow down a minute.

"Slow down?" I said to myself. "For what?" I said. There I was with the music going as it played, "Move..... get out the way!" In my own world of quiet destruction, as I continued hitting breaks for safety. I also allowed the pedestrians to cross the street as I honked my horned at them. I mean who was I to be inconsiderate of the innocent ones who were not participating in shopping for sales.

In the car I was yelling, " Move out the way!" When they turned my way, I just looked at them and wave as I shouted, "Happy Holidays!" Other than that everything was in tact and I was almost there at the store. I pulled in the parking lot and searched for the closest park that I could find.

I had my eyes set on a park but before I could turn into it, a little man on a Harley pulled right in front of me. I honked my horn and threw my hands in the air. He looked back at me while getting off his motorcycle. I could see his lips mimicking the words, "Hey, I was here first!" I bit my bottom lip with anger as I drove around to the other side to find a different parking space.

"Finally!" I said. I had arrived but I could tell that I was behind schedule. The doors where already open and people were coming out of the store with electronics and appliances. So, I hurried inside to see what I could get. The store was crowded and chaos was starting to build up among aggressive shoppers. I watch as two customers stood in the aisle and played tug a war with a 32 in flat screen. They were selling for 80 dollars and it was indeed the last one.

I kept walking and pretended to not watch as I tried so hard to mind my business. I vowed that I would get in and get out, so I grabbed a cart and started walking down the aisle. I already knew what I was going to buy. Therefore, this was going to be a breeze I said. I had no intentions of arguing or fighting over anything. I was there to pick up the things that I could get and leave. That's what I kept telling myself. Although convincing was seeing and believing.

There I was, standing two feet away from one of the top best security systems. It was perfect, and I knew that my husband would of been proud of me for getting it at such a low price. So, I bent over to make sure my shoes were tied and headed over to the shelf. It was almost as if I was in a marathon with the music playing in the background. I had passed several people who was heading in the same direction but were not moving the same pace as I was.

They couldn't stop me nor could they see me coming. I had my Air Gliders on and I was gliding right pass the other customers. Passing arguments, tug a war fights, debates and any other issues that may have been at hand. My mind was on one thing and that was retrieving that last security system. It was mine and I was going to get in and get out. That was the plan and I was sticking to it.

I reach out to grab the last security system and suddenly a straggly hand reached up and snatched it away. My jaw dropped to the floor as I turned around to see who had beat me to the take. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe that I had been punk. There I was standing in front of the bully that had teased me earlier. The top of my brow twitched as I stared at the little man holding what was mine.

There he was standing, while holding the last security system. He looked at me with a smug face and said, "I was here first!"

And I looked at him and said, "Did you see that!" "See what, said the man?" He turned away while holding the security system as I knock over a bunch of remote control toys. The box went into the air as he fell backwards from the toys wobbling under his feet.

I had knocked over so many toys leaving him to loose his balance. As he fell to the floor the box fell into my cart. I ran straight to the self check out and scan the device while paying with my credit card. While I was standing in line, I could hear them call for a clean up in the Electronic area. Nevertheless, I waited for my receipt to print out and headed straight to the parking lot with the biggest grin on my face.

As I drove away I said, " I Got In and Got Out!"

I am working on the grammar errors. I have to admit that I see them more after reading it a third time. Lol, I'll bite! I think it be my typing, cause at times I fast. Thank you for reading, any feedback is helpful!

cute story, captures the mayhem of consumer frenzy and the character is well embedded within that. The writing could use some editing grammatically in places but no big deal. In particular it wasn't clear when she gets into the car. So the character sticks to her guns, gets what she wants, and gets a bit of payback to the guy who took her parking place. Interesting that what she was buying is a security system. I like how the story encapsulates the flavour of panic and distress that is sublimated in consumerism.
