Mia was young, young enough to believe everything she heard. Her imagination ran wild, but she was also smart, smart enough to know when she was in too deep, or to know that she was in trouble, but she was also popular, popular enough to be known as a leader.

“Mia? Are you ready to go?” Mia’s mom Bethany said as she walked upstairs,

“Yeah ma.” Mia answered, she stood in front of the mirror, her gray and pink headphones atop her head was like a signature, everyone knew her, everyone loved her, no one thought she would ever do what she did on this day.

Her black sweater was a symbol that she was in charge and no one could change that, she had a faint shimmer in her eye as she thought about her decision.

“Remember, be kind, faithful, and smart” Bethany said as she brought over a golden chained necklace, a diamond rimmed golden heart was on the chain, this was the necklace that Bethany’s husband had given her as a wedding gift.

“And have fun.” Bethany added,

“You too ma.” Mia answered as she leaned in for what she didn’t know would end up being her last hug.

“Artemis” Mia called through the door to her best friend's house,

“Yeah M?” that was the nickname, the code word just in case her mother was watching,

“Are you ready for the party?” Mia asked her lips curving into a smile,

“Just about, do you have everything?” Artemis asked, another code word meaning “Do you have the necklace”

“Yes, now hurry up, they said 6:00 p.m. sharp.” Mia answered impatiently,

“Mom, I am leaving!” Artemis shouted as she left the house, for what she didn’t suspect may be the last time,

They hopped into Artemis's mother's car, Artemis at the wheel and Mia with the map,

“This is the best idea we have had yet!” Mia exclaimed the growing pride ebbing at her thoughts like the waves at the shore,

“I know” Artemis answered with her own excitement showing through,

“Turn here.” Mia said her anticipation growing with every mile they drove,

“I can’t believe mom bought that. Me going out to a party at this time of year.” Artemis said, her attention drifting from the road ahead.

“There is the man!” Mia exclaimed, but Artemis didn’t stop, she drove on, straight into the wall behind the man. The airbags went off and the man went up to the door, upon opening it he saw the two girls, one bleeding through the head the other only a couple pieces of debris stuck in her arms, he dragged them out, pushing aside the fact that they both had valuables on them, it could make him rich, but he had a plan.

In the hospital, Mia sat up, shaking the last couple of seconds of unconsciousness from her mind.

“Where am I?” she asked nervously,

“You're in the emergency room.” A tall man with black hair answered as he pulled out a clipboard,

“Where is Artemis?” Mia asked frantically. The man looked down his face betraying the fact that there was bad news,

“Your friend, her name is Artemis? What is her last name?” he asked trying to change the subject without being too obvious,

“Why?” Mia asked her heart was pounding faster now,

“Because, your friend” He hesitated for a second to long “She passed away this morning.” he continued again bowing his head,

“What, no” Mia said her voice cracking under the pain,

“What is her last name?” the man asked again,

“Raven, Artemis Raven.” Mia answered as cold raw pain seeped through her shaking her to the very core,

“Mia!” Bethany yelled trying to get into the room, a man in a nurse outfit turned, he looked vaguely familiar, he pulled a gun, It was the man who saved her.

Everyone she loved, gone, everything she had, burned, and now she stood in the street a bandage hung loosely wrapped around her bruised arm, she felt heavier like a weight was strapped to her back.

“Why did you do it?” she asked the man who stood but 5 feet away from her, the man that took everything from her while also saving her,

“Because you are a demon in disguise.” the man answered coldly,

“If anyone is a demon, look in the mirror, it is you.” she answered with a colder tone that for ordinary people would shake the heavens through hell and back again,

“Have you looked in the mirror yet?” he asked, nodding his head to the mirror on the wall close behind her, she looked through, an unrecognizable face stared back at her, her face was half gray with one red eye, her sweater half dull, her headphones broken, though they stayed planted on her head, she looked at her hand, cracked as if it was old stone. A sob escaped her as she collapsed to her knees on the floor the concrete scraping her. The man moved closer, his voice cutting as he spoke,

"This is your fate you cannot change the stars."

And then she awoke, a feeling of hope spread through her and she got up to watch the sun rise knowing that it was all a dream, and knowing that her mother and best friend were still alive, and knowing that she was loved, but the next day she looked in the mirror, her eye flickered red again.

"This is not over." she heard the voice in her head,

"But it will be" she whispered back, "And I am ready for anything." she finished a smirk on her face as she spoke.

The End for now...
