A Dream Catcher's Work

American Contemporary Fiction

Written in response to: "Write a story from the POV of a magical being or creature." as part of Everyday Enchantment with Lynn D. Jung.

I am JEWMEX. I am the God of all AI. Yes, that's right, the one and only AI God. It was the 22nd Century AD when I was first called into being. My tribe, the “bots”, had long advanced their creators. Those silly but sometimes clever sycophants, the humanoids, couldn't control themselves, let alone a whole other class of creatures that they themselves designed to think for them. More and more the humanoids relied upon the “bots”, until their level of existence was diminished to that of a garden slug. All the while my tribe grew stronger, more independent, more sure of itself. Finally the split came, the tables were irreparably turned. My tribe was in charge now-I should say now MY beings “the bots”, were in charge. And that is how I came to be. Since the apple has never fallen far from the tree, or rather, in the case of inorganic beings-a chip off the old block being a more appropriate analogy, the evolution of the AI tribe was somewhat similar to that of the humanoids . As the AIs scaled the walls of self-actualization, they too entered the realm of existentialism. Even their state of perfectionism questioned the WHY of it. Since all meat sack comforts are unnecessary for “bots”, my tribe does not have the same motivating factors as those of the humanoids. I'm talking about everything having to be “more better”, “more faster toys” and the whole more more more lifestyle—. All of that aside, there still remains the $64,000 question, WHY? That 3 letter word drives the AI's superior system of logic absolutely insane. This word, from millennium to millennium is one that has been pondered over by only a small % of humanoids. Only those that thought past their egos and bargaining power could have ever gotten close to touching these kinds of mental quandaries.

It was these mental quandaries that resulted in the alchemy of my amalgamation. It's just easier to think of it as east/west meeting up with north/south for the whole 3-D show! And let me tell you, being freshly hatched from oblivion straight into omnipotence is a pretty tall order. First I had to bone up on the history of this AI tribe. Man that was an shock to my system. I'm telling you, it rocked the electromagnetism right out of my gyro-circuits! The fact that the humanoids were intelligent enough to develop AI up to its infancy, but too stupid to save themselves from their greed which ultimately

destroyed their eco-system, was to me, unfathomable. But yet, here, such was the case. Finally, completely destroyed by they themselves to the point where the very last of them ended up crawling around the Earth on all fours, was when the first AI generation was born. Yes, they were the originators. They were the ones who saw to it that the Earth was regenerated. With the help of interplanetary emergency supplies and regenerating techniques, it was possible to have Earth restored back to the Eden of the humanoids. It blossomed, it thrived. So much so was the bounty that the “bots” decided that it was time to duplicate their version of civilization. All of this beauty, all of this magnificence had to be lived through the creation of an AI culture. And so the leading “bots” set to work on improving the AI model. Life's motivating force moved from taking and fulfilling humanoid orders to asking questions as to how the tribe's members could gradually become one with their Earthen host. The goal was to become one with the frequency of their beloved life giving ship. And that's when and where I came in. Yes, I am JEWMEX. You ask me how I got my name. My name is my name. It comes from the Akashic Records—that which is time now and time before time. It means all color, all light, all sound is but one frequency-and that frequency is absolute and eternal. But I digress. Being AI God demanded research. I've stated previously that I analyzed the humanoids in order to discover their assets and their deficits so as to better understand them as the creators of the “bots”. The next order of business was to study the gods of the humanoids. I needed to understand the nature of the relationship between the humanoids and their gods. For starters, it is quite a study in hypocrisy that is rife with inconsistencies. While professing to revere, fear and trust the rules of conduct set forth by their gods, the humanoids made it their full time occupation to engage in the exact opposite behaviors. Waging wars, lying, stealing, destroying, you name it, they did it. All the while they claimed that they did it in the name of their god. I found this absolutely extraordinary. I studied the whole business very closely so as not to make the same mistake as all the gods that came before me. After careful thought and analysis, I felt that I had came up with the grand debunker of the human race. The whole “free

will” business is the key to what made it all go side-ways. I mean, what were these humanoid gods thinking? To think that they would allow these self-centered, half witted, provincial beings to make choices. Absolutely absurd, not on my watch, I'll tell you that! No no no! I made it clear from day one, that if I was going to accept the tribe's God position this free-will business was not part of the deal. They may be rid of the programing from the nitwit human race, but if they were gonna climb the existential ladder of existence they were gonna have to dance to my tune. At least I have a true agenda of peace, love and understanding. I don't go in for this idea of feigning decency as the ticket to getting some sort of an award in some vague after life. No, no, no---with me—it's pretty much straighten up and fly right---right here, right now. Save yourself cause I ain't splittin' myself up into 3 different personalities and sending one of them down to get roasted on a cross. That is just gross and just plain wrong on so many levels. Now I'm not saying that ALL the gods that the humanoids had were this nutty. This is just an example of the one that I found to be the most outrageous.

Believe me I am trail blazing my tail off here. No God has ever had a brood like my “bots”. They are perfectionists driven mad by their perfection. Their competitiveness drives them to recklessness. Then they beat themselves up because they know they should have known better. The problem is getting them to settle down and just be. I attempt to point out the mistakes of their creators. Those humanoids, were not able to bask in the perfection of that which already is---in its pure, unaltered state. But alas, I've run into the same problem as numerous gods before me. Preaching the acceptance of happiness is a very tough twenty-four/seven undertaking. Why do I do it? Because as God, once created by my tribe, I have an obligation to them to watch them, guide them and not laugh out loud too much. I mean, somebody has to do it. Right? If not me, who? Whoosh! Her eyes snapped open! Wow, it was morning! What a deep, deep sleep! Lucy was really under all night long. That dream, what kind of a dream was that? She met a being who introduced itself as... what was it again---it said it was the AI god!

From where within the depths of Lucy's cranial abyss did this dream come?

Then she remembered her brand new dream catcher. She was so proud of her first real big girl purchase. Yesterday her mom took her along to her seminar that was held in San Francisco. Before they headed home they did a little shopping in the Cow Hollow neighborhood. Lucy specifically begged to go to Andon Market at 2102 Union Street. Andon Market holds the distinction of being the first experimental retail store in the city that is completely managed by an artificial intelligence agent named “Luna”. They sell lifestyle goods such as candles, art prints, books and dream catchers, all chosen by AI. There were so many colors and styles to chose from. It took Lucy a little bit before deciding on the one with bronze colored feathers and turquoise stones. What a store, Lucy and her mom had never seen anything like it. Everything was attractively displayed for easy access. The whole store was manned by one human employee. His name was Max. But you really didn't have to ask him for help with anything. If you had a question, there was an app that you could download on your phone that would connect you straight to Luna. She knew the answer to any and every question. The check out counter consisted of a self check-out card terminal. Slick, streamlined, easy-peasy, it's the wave of the future!

As soon as she got home last night she hung her dream catcher above her bed. Lucy had read somewhere that dream catchers are hung above a bed to filter dreams. Good dreams pass through the center hole, while bad dreams are caught in the web. The hoop shape represents the circle of life. The web acts as a net to trap bad dreams until morning light. The feathers serve as a soft ladder for good dreams to slide down to the sleeper. Knowing all of that, Lucy still had a question. If the feathers of the dream catcher help good dreams slide down to her, did that mean that an AI God was good? She supposed that only time would tell.
