Not Studying, Not Studying

Middle School

Written in response to: "Write about someone who’s been sent to boarding school." as part of Out on the Moor.

"When is your exam, Tom?"

"Mom, the exams are starting after a month."

"Start studying."

"No, mom, there are many days left, mom."

"Do you know your grades for the first exam?"

"I know."

"You got a 'c' grade."

"I know, but it does not matter to me."

"If you got the same type of, grades see what I'll do."

"Okay, mom."

"Now, go to your room and start studying."

"Okay."

Tom goes to his room, and he was lying on his bed, but he did not know that his mom was following him when he was coming into his room. His mother wanted to see what Tom will do, and she saw that he was lying on the bed.

She came into the room, and she said, "Why are you lying on the bed?"

"Because I was feeling sleepy."

"You know what I said?"

"What did you said?"

"I said to study not for lying down."

"Okay."

Tom's mother, Ruby, was knowing that Tom would not be listening to him. So she was near the door. After when Ruby went outside of his room, she saw that he was again lying down and playing games on his phone. So she came into the room, and she scolded Tom.

Ruby went to Tom's dad Nathan.

She said that "Tom is not studying for his exam."

"He should study after seeing his first exam grades."

"Yes, he should, but he says that it does not matter to him."

"Did you have a word with him?"

"I had, and I told him to study, but he was playing games."

"I don't know why he is not concentrating on his studies."

"I also don't get it why he doesn't study?"

"I think we should have a word with him to know what he will do in his career."

"Let's go, Nathan."

They move towards Tom's room.

"Hey, Tom."

"Hey, dad."

" We wanted to talk about your career."

"Why are you talking about my career, I am just 11 years old?"

"We want to talk to you about your career because you are not studying and then what you will do in your future if not studying now."

"Okay, so let's talk about it."

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

"I haven't thought about it, dad."

"What do you think what will you able to do?"

"I want to become a military officer if I get a chance to become."

"Okay, but do you know to become a military officer you need to study."

"Why do I need to study to become a military officer?"

"When you become a military officer, you need to use your maths."

"What's the use of math in a war?"

"When you are in a war, you need to see your enemy and take an angle that can shot the enemy, and then you can make your army win."

"Okay, but there is a lot of time for me to become a military officer."

"Okay, so start studying for the exam."

"There is a month left for the exam, so I will start studying afterward."

"Okay."

Days passed by and, a week was left for the exam.

The time table came.

His first paper was of History. His mother comes into his room.

"Tom, have you started studying for the exam?"

"No, I will start by tomorrow."

"You have a total of nine exams, and there are just two holidays including Saturdays and Sundays."

"I know, so I will start studying tomorrow."

"Okay, remember to study tomorrow."

"Yes, mom, I will to tomorrow."

Tom's mother left the room, but her mother was sure that he would not study tomorrow. Tom wasted the whole day playing video games and other stuff.

The next day came. Tom's mother comes into Tom's room.

"Hey, Tom, have you started studying for the exams? Only four days are left."

"No, mom."

"Why? Yesterday you told me that you gonna start studying tomorrow."

"Yes, yesterday I told you that I will do tomorrow, but I realized that tomorrow never comes."

"What do you mean by tomorrow never comes?"

"I mean if I say tomorrow I will do my work, but when tomorrow comes it becomes today."

"Very clever, you trying to escape studies."

"No."

"I will talk to your father."

Ruby lefts Tom's room and moves towards Nathan's room.

"Nathan, I want to talk to you about Tom."

"Okay, is he studying for his exam as only four days are left?"

"No, he is not."

"What do you want to tell about Tom?"

"I wanted to tell you that he is trying to escape studies."

"Are you serious, I want to talk to him?"

Tom's mom and dad go to Tom's room.

"Hey, Tom, are you trying to escape studies."

"What do you mean by trying to escape studies?"

"I mean you are not studying for your exams."

"Okay, I will start studying now."

"If you get the grades like last time you just what will happen with you."

"Okay, dad."

They leave, but Tom doesn't start studying he lies down and sleeps.

It was the day for the results of the exam.

Tom and his mom and dad go to his school for the result.

As soon as Tom's teacher gives Ruby the results, after seeing the paper Ruby sadly passes the paper to Nathan.

The result was FAIL.

When Tom sees his paper he was grief-stricken.

Tom says to himself, " What have I done. I am failed."

Tom's family reaches their home.

Tom's parents directly go to Tom's room.

"Tom, did you see your result?"

"Yes, dad."

"You know you were failed?"

"Yes, dad."

"In front of the whole school, you have made our shame."

"Dad I didn't on purpose."

"You haven't studied and didn't any preparation before the exams."

"I know that I haven't studied."

"Now just see what punishment we are bringing."

"Okay, dad."

Tom's parent leaves Tom's room and plans what punishment give.

They already thought of it. It was to send Tom boarding school. They filled the admission form and went to Tom's room to tell the punishment.

"Tom your punishment is you are going to boarding school in a week and stay there till you start studying properly and get good grades there."

"Okay, dad."

Tom packs his bag and after a week he lefts for boarding school.

The story is good. But you must focus on grammatical errors, use 'grammarly' it will help you a lot, but I would not suggest to not improve as an artist. Do practice grammar and you will be better each time you write.

God bless you

Great story, if a little hard to follow and if the dialogue felt unnatural and stiff in some parts. I would suggest maybe adding dialogue tags to show who’s speaking, a bit more description and maybe revising your sentences for tenses and small typos/missed out words. For example:

“It was to send Tom boarding school. They filled the admission form and went to Tom's room to tell the punishment.

"Tom your punishment is you are going to boarding school in a week and stay there till you start studying properly and get good grades there."

"Okay, dad."”

You could try something like:

“ It was to send Tom to boarding school. They filled the admission form, and went to Tom's room to break the news.

"Tom.” His father strides in.
“Yes?” He asks in that nonchalant attitude his parents were getting a little too used to.
“Your punishment is that you are going to boarding school in a week. You will stay there till you start studying properly your grades improves. I hope this will teach you a lesson.” Both Nathan and Ruby say.

"Okay, dad." Tom replied, not truly realising the weight of the situation.”

That was just a suggestion, but it was a great read, well done! :D

Amazing story. I liked it and the punctuation had no mistake. You have used the prompt well. Great work.

You have to take care of the tenses. You will improve by time. Just keep writing.

Would you mind reading my new story

Hey, I think this is a lovely story. Although, I agree with Vayd Danish with the grammar. It's not perfectly well written but I wouldn't do any better so I don't blame you !

You’ve improved since your last story! It’s very clear! Great job!

Only thing is, there is no twist in the story. It’s only about a guy who doesn’t study and wants to become an officer in the army. If you have time, I suggest editing it.

Okay, Amogh.
This story was good, kind of redundant with the dialogues, but it gave a good massage.
I like the moral, but there were a lot of grammatical and other errors along with repetitive dialogues and narration that made the story boring.
You could have added some plot twist, or something else to make the story interesting.

Yeah a cool story. I found some mistakes.
Pls read the whole comment
1. “No mom, there are many days left mom”
First of all only 1 time mom
2. “What did you said”
No, it’s “What did you say?”
3. “I said to study not for lying down”
Wait wait wait wait wait, it’s “I said you to study, not for lying down on the bed”
4. Ruby went to Nathan’s room.
Do they have separate rooms for each other?
5. When she talks to Nathan, means like you can’t understand which person is saying whT. So u must add - said Nathan, said Ruby
6. In one place you have used ‘his’ for Ruby.
7. When Tom sees his paper he was grief stricken
First of all add a comma after paper, and add a dash after grief.
8. The line where you have written they were ashamed of his results,
Maybe you should reframe it like “You have made us feel ashamed in front of the whole school”
9. Toms parents leave his room and plans what punishments to give.
Maybe it should be ‘plan’ instead of plans
10. Tom packs his bag and after a week he lefts for boarding school.
So it should be ‘Tom packs his bag and after a week, he leaves for his new boarding school.

So like this is only the errors that I found.
P.S - pls use grammarly.
And do correct other things too which I might have left out.
And yeah, make some twist in the story

Correction for the corrections:
7. "When Tom sees his paper he was grief stricken"
Good points, but I have 2 more- add a hyphen for "grief-stricken" and since the story is in the past tense, it should be "When Tom SAW his paper."
