Junior Year Halloween Horror Night
Sounds of laughter, shouts and noise echoed all around me. The music sounded overwhelmingly loud I couldn’t make out the words but I could hear the beats. My ears were pounding !! I had to get out of here immediately… I made my way through the living room past the drinking table near the kitchen.
‘ Hey John where are you going?’ a voice asked
‘ Going home ‘ I replied my voice sounding louder than usual
‘ This soon come on man the movie hasn’t even started yet’.
‘ I don feeeel goodddd … toooo blurrryyy’ I slurred
I pushed past them and went through the living room door. I made it through the front door on the porch people were sitting and laughing they smelled of alcohol I could make out that much.
Somebody grabbed me by the shoulders.
‘Dude you look a sight for sore eyes; I was looking for you’
‘ Wanna go out onto the roof’
‘ Nooo Austin gottaa gooo’
‘I don’t want you to go by yourself we came together. How will you leave?’
‘ Walkkk’
He tried to stop me I pushed past him too and went down the steps until I was on the sidewalk. The sounds from the backyard were even louder that was where all the main party action was not that I cared I just had to go home. I kept walking after a few meters I was out of the neighborhood into the next one. I removed my mask I was dressed as a skeleton. Luckily with the mask on nobody saw how drunk I must have really looked. I was just there since my friends gave me the invitation . Parties aren’t truly my thing.
I looked up and saw I was now on a long winding road near the woods. I should’ve called mom to pick me up.
‘Whoosh’ I jumped backwards and landed on the grass near the woods.
‘owww’ my back was really aching my vision spun in circles
‘ Whoosh’ I heard it again this time closer
I got up dizzily and ran into the woods. How I managed to do it I really didn’t know. I thought of Austin how worried he sounded. I knew it was him he had always been my number one best friend. No matter what I would always recognize him. I should’ve stayed I felt guilty. Tears blurred my vision even more. I crashed into a tree trunk.
‘Goddd’ my head was pounding as my legs gave out and I fell to my knees on the ground. I felt my face hit the grass . I lay there for a few seconds until I heard the same sound again. I turned my face. I was now lying backwards on the forest floor.
The sound was getting louder and louder until it stopped as it’s source was hovering right over me. I could make out it was white in color and it was in the air. It was a ghost. It was looking exactly like the Halloween costumes I saw at the party earlier.
‘ Hahhahaa verrryy funnnyyy’ I laughed was this some kind of prank? Somebody scaring me for leaving, trying to draw me back to the party where I could get even more scared with a vicious horror movie yeah right!!
After a few seconds I realized it was not moving just looking at me with hostility reflected on its face . It was sneering at me. It was on a mission. It had eyes that could kill!
‘Wait I-‘ I screamed as I felt its claws slice me across the chest tearing open a part of my costume. Blood was flowing down me. What a great night this was . Austin would be so worried. Rather than watching the movie I had headed into a different horror story. This was my last thought before I heard it soaring upwards and then a second later my vision turned to black.
When I woke up I heard hurried voices whispering . I slowly opened my eyes and saw I was in a hospital room. I saw daylight coming from the window. I blinked trying to adjust to it.
‘ Oh good you’re awake thank goodness’ It was mom she rushed over and I felt her take me by the shoulders holding me tight.
‘ Mom let go’ I said I looked down and saw I wasn’t wearing my costume. My chest still had the scar marks but they had faded into burn marks. The blood had been wiped away.
‘ I’m just thankful you’re okay’ She said tears welling up in her eyes
‘ How did you even find me?’ I asked confused
‘ I did Austin called me’ It was my baby brother Hayden
‘You did’
‘ Yup I was in the car with mom and I saw the skeleton mask lying on the side of the road, mom almost ran over it.’ He said
‘ Here it is’ He handed it over to me ‘ You’re an idiot by the way’
‘ I know I am’ I agreed with a sigh
‘ Austin is a good friend if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t have found you then. We would have been waiting for you on the couch’ Mom said
‘ Well you would have mom. I was wanting to attend the party actually and just when I was thinking of coming Austin called.’ Hayden said
‘ I’m surprised you did’ I said
‘ You scared me to death’ mom said
I could see from their faces they wanted to know what happened. After I finished talking I saw Hayden begin to laugh
‘ There’s no way a ghost attacked you it was probably some wild animal. I thought it was’ He fell onto a chair laughing
‘ I swear to you it was’ I glared at him annoyed
‘ Honey there’s no way it was a ghost just because it was Halloween doesn’t mean-
‘ Mom I know what I saw’ I countered
‘ You were drunk it was blurry’
‘ That’s right you were drunk off your ass I’m surprised you made it out of the party’ Hayden said wheezing
‘ Dude this isn’t funny’
‘ Sure is to me you know what-
‘ Sorry to interrupt but I came by to check on John’ It was Austin.
I sat up straight which caused me to grimace. Austin I said his name with relief at least now I had someone who would hopefully believe me.
‘John I stayed here half the night came as soon as I could.’ He hurried into the room
‘ I got to talk to you’
‘ Me too I was waiting for you to wake up. I heard Hayden laughing.’
‘ Yup it’s hilarious he was apparently attacked by a -
‘ Hayden you know what let’s wait outside give them some privacy’
‘ Thank you mom’ I sighed still annoyed with Hayden
‘ Don’t believe what attacked him’. He told Austin as he left.
When the door had closed behind them Austin took the chair that Hayden had just vacated. He looked at me for a few seconds and then looked down staring at his hands. It just made me feel even guiltier.
‘ Listen Austin I know you’re upset with me . I know I should’ve-
‘ Save it I feel-
‘ No I shouldn’t have gotten drunk like that I should have stuck with you the entire time from when you went upstairs –
‘ John stop’
‘ I shouldn’t have let you get drunk like that. I don’t blame you for leaving you were so drunk and parties aren’t your thing anyway. We could’ve gone to my house and watched horror movies. Hell we could’ve even gone trick or treating. We’re only 16 after all.’ He replied earnestly
‘ You’re only saying this since I got attacked.’ I said
‘No I would have said so anyway.’ He said solemnly
After a moment of silence he asked how it happened. When I had finished I expected him to laugh or shake his head incredulously . But instead he nodded at me and once again looked down at his hands.
‘ Yup makes sense.’
‘ So you really believe me then.’ I said seriously
‘ You got attacked on Halloween man. I’ve read many articles of Halloween attacks.’ He said
‘ Besides you’re my best friend’. He added
I nodded. We stayed quiet for a bit and then he pointed out the burn marks. He asked did the spirit have a hot touch emitting from it. Was there any fire involved was another question.
‘ Of course not’ I yelped ‘ Just bleeding’
‘ Does it heat up?’ He asked cautiously
‘ It hasn’t’ I said
He was skeptical wondering why the scars were burns. I didn’t share the curiosity.
Afterwards a nurse came and put bandages to cover the marks and I wore clothes my dad got from home. He had just returned from a work trip. Before I left however my mom told me two detectives had come to interview me. I was unsure what to say. When they asked me about how I got attacked I blurted out that it was a wild animal . I hadn’t been questioned by detectives before. They looked uncertain as if they didn’t believe me. They were thinking a human was involved that there was a possibility my attack was intended to be a homicide. After they left I headed home.
After lunch Austin came over and my friend Cody who I talked to at the party. He lives in the same neighborhood and went to the same middle school but decided to attend a different high school so we don’t see each other as often. He believed me he looked doubtful but Austin gave him a look so it convinced him.
Afterwards in the days that would follow people at school came and asked about Halloween night. I told them the same lie they wouldn’t have believed me anyways. After I told the same lie for the third day in a row when I came home exhausted of talking about it is when something really started to happen. I was throwing darts at the archery board in my room when suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my chest. It was the burn heating up. I clutched my chest in pain and fell to the ground. While I was heaving suddenly I was transported somewhere else.
‘ You have to mean it’
‘Mean what?’
‘ What you’re chanting of course’
‘There has to be another way’
‘This is the only way’
I was in a cave watching a boy sitting on the ground crisscrossed in front of an old man. A book lay on the ground in front of him . The old man took out a knife from his robes and put in on top of the book.
‘You know what to do’
‘ No I won’t’
‘You must you’re the only one who can you’re a direct descendant of him.’
He placed a wooden bowl next to the book.
‘I WON’T I WON’T I WON’T –
The old man roughly took his hands and sliced both his palms so the blood flowed.
I gasped clutching the side of the bed in support. I was shaken what I had seen that was like from a movie scene except it wasn’t it was a memory. It was real there’s no way it wasn’t , the traumatized look on the boy’s face. I got up heavily and called Austin. He came over sitting on the bed next to me
‘ So this was a memory of the spirit?’ He asked
‘ Yeah it had to be.’ I replied
‘ It was after the burn flared up right?’ He looked at me cautiously
‘ Yeah ‘
‘ I knew there was something off about your wound’ He said knowingly
‘ Damn right I should’ve been suspicious too.’ I admitted
‘ I really am smarter than you’ He said evenly
‘I know I wish I had your brains’ I sighed
He laughed. Then he said he would research a way to remove the curse. He said this attack was meant to convey a message from the spirit and by removing the curse it would stop. He did tell me to let him know when it would flare up next though.
I was walking home from school the next time it happened. I clutched the lamppost on the sidewalk I was a few blocks away from my house.
‘ Hello what brings you here to speak to me today’
I was in the same basement a continuation of the memory. In front of the boy was smoke on a censer . The smoke was green in color rising in the air swirling in the form of a spirit.
‘ I have to save the princess of Silkanville. She’s dying. I’m told you have a cure. Please help me save her.’
‘ There is a way no medicine is helping no doctor so the only way is to keep the balance of nature a life for a life.’
‘ Really is that the way?’
‘ You have to bring me a body it is the only way’
‘OH MY GOD I HAVE TO CALL 911. SOMEBODY CALL AN AMBULANCE!!’
I woke up with a start I was lying on the sidewalk. In front of me was a women frantically rummaging through her purse. I had collapsed while experiencing this memory.
‘ What’s the matter ?’ Somebody was looking through their window
‘ HE’S HAVING A SEIZURE!!’
‘No I’m fine I’m fine I swear to you’
‘Oh so you’re awake then you’re alive I thought for sure that this was an emergency’
‘ No it’s I have asthma and I forgot my inhaler at home so it was getting really hard to breath that’s all’ I said giving her a small smile as if an asthma attack was the least of anyone’s problems.
‘I Thought I had to take you to the hospital’ she said looking at me in astonishment
‘ No no of course not this isn’t my first time having an asthma attack’ I got up and started jogging to my house.
The nature of the lies I was telling people was really making me look crazy I bet. When I got home dad was there he was working from home that day. He asked me what was going on and I told him my wounds were still paining. I told him the spirit inflicted me with them. Of course he didn’t believe me probably because my mom and brother already told him. Great my own family didn’t believe me just great just the kind of support I needed. It was on a Halloween night also what a timing.
‘ I won’t commit murder for this.’ The boy said
‘ Even to save somebody else’s life. She’s your princess.’ The old man replied
‘ I won’t it’s wrong’ He insisted
‘ Letting her die will be wrong too’ He countered
‘ I know I will work this out’ He said determinedly
I was in my room again so it was two in one day. I looked at the wound it had turned into a darker shade of red. When I called Austin he said he would come for a sleepover. We’ll just let it play out is what he advised me.
That night I was dreaming: first it started with me as a small boy getting chased by my little brother then it changed to me tripping in the sand in the school playground and getting laughed at to me wandering alone in the rain in Washington Dc when I got lost a year ago. There was the boy standing out alone in the dark waiting outside the palace gates. He looked about my age. He looked determined to do something.
The gates opened and out came a girl of about the same age.
‘ Vincent you said you found a cure.’
‘ Yes I have Aurelia hear me out it’s not what you-
‘ I want to know what it is’ she cut him off
‘ Princess the cure is not a herb’
‘ I know what it is’ It was the old man
‘ How did you know about me coming here?’ Vincent asked looking behind himself
‘ I have my eyes and ears everywhere’ he replied calmly
‘ What is it ?’ Aurelia asked
‘ He intends to sacrifice himself’ the old man said
‘ No you mustn’t’ her eyes widened
‘I have to my ancestor told me a life for a life’ he replied turning to look at her
‘ That doesn’t mean you have to die for me I won’t let you.’
‘You can’t stop me’
‘ I won’t stop him either even though I’d actually like to’ said the old man
‘ Really? After you forcefully cut my hands you want me to not do this’ Vincent replied incredulously
‘ Yes it was to only get the message but I do care for you boy’.
‘ Please ‘ Aurelia begged him
He looked at her with determination. The scene changed to him in an open field he held a knife. She was crying the old man holding her back.
‘ I’m sorry’ he told her then he stabbed himself in the chest.
I woke up shuddering. Austin woke up too he held me. I began to cry it was awful the blood flowing from his chest as he lay on the ground. I felt what Vincent was feeling misunderstood and bitter. After his sacrifice nobody cared they only celebrated the princesses recovery. They didn’t care about a poor peasant who sacrificed himself for her. When I told Austin this he felt bad but it was because I felt bad. I noticed something that others couldn’t see.
