— I love her.
Said just like that. Low. Almost shameful. Like something that should have stayed buried in the gut.
— She's not my daughter. Not my blood. But at night I get up. I go to her room. I hold my hand in front of her mouth. I feel the warm air. Only then do I go back to bed.
What I don't tell the officer is that sometimes I stay. My back against her bed, knees pulled up, and I listen. I listen to the house. The wood working. The nails in the joists. The roof. The walls. I listen to see if it holds. I've known places that didn't hold. Places where the wood lies from the moment night falls.
— Mr. Pruitt. In the back of the car. We're going to find the girl. The door will lock.
I nodded. The lights move through the trees. They slide across the wet grass. Catch on the trunks. Disappear. The light found nothing. There was too much dark and the girl was too small.
Nobody ever sat beside me just to stay. Nobody ever chose me.
Lily did.
The first evening she came without fear. She took my hand. Her palm barely fit inside mine. It wasn't really a hand. It was a living warmth. Her fingers closed around it and something inside me went quiet. She had laid her hand over it. Like a dog that finally lies down.
— There's something I should have told you. Lily's father. Travis. He came back. Miranda doesn't want him anywhere near but he comes anyway. He lives on Mill Road. The mobile home with the two pickups out front. He's using. He threatened Miranda. Says he wants the girl back. At night. I saw him once in the yard. Two in the morning. Standing in front of the little one's window. Just standing. The drugs had eaten the man. Had eaten the father. Had eaten everything that might have been saved. What was left standing in the dark was the mechanism. The appetite.
The officer reached for his radio without looking at me.
— Travis Deal. Mill Road. Biological father.
The name went out into the static. Picked up by another voice. Then another. Farther and farther away. Travis Deal's name moving through the night like a dog slipped from its leash that wasn't coming back.
— We'll check it out, Mr. Pruitt.
I watched the lights between the trees. I should have spoken sooner. I knew. Since the night I saw him there, motionless in the dark, arms at his sides, staring at the little one's window. I hadn't moved either. Two men standing in the dark on either side of a pane of glass and between them a three-year-old girl sleeping with her fists balled up. Him outside. Me inside. And between us, her, fists closed, her nothing-breath, all that trust children have when they believe the walls are enough.
I get in the back.
It smells of heated vinyl. Cold coffee. Old sweat. Not the sweat of work. The sweat of waiting. Everyone who had waited here before me had understood that. The distance had changed.
The door slams. Then the lock.
A small dry click.
The last person to see Lily was me. There's always someone. This time it's me.
— I shouldn't have fallen asleep.
I hear it come out of my mouth like it belongs to someone else.
— I shouldn't have closed my eyes.
There are things I won't say. They're there behind the useful words. Packed in tight. Standing upright. The house was calm. Not silent. Calm.
— It's my fault.
The officer leans toward the window. His flashlight knocks softly against his thigh.
— It's not your fault, Mr. Pruitt. Children move. They get up. They open a door. We're going to find her. We have people everywhere.
The word stayed stuck to my skin like a stain that won't wash out. He has a stain on his collar. Brown. Almost black. Sauce or coffee or old blood from a meal that didn't matter.
— Can you lower the window. I'm not asking to get out. Just some air. Otherwise I'm going to be sick on your seat.
He watches me. Hesitates.
— Please.
He walks around. Leans in from the front. Presses the button. The window comes down three centimeters. Maybe four. The exact distance between procedure and mercy.
The air comes in. Cold. Wet. Grass and earth and gravel. The garden.
— Breathe, Mr. Pruitt. We're going to find her.
I breathed. And for a second I'm no longer there. No longer in the car. No longer under the lights. Lily crouched in the grass in her yellow dress stained with juice on the belly that Miranda had given up trying to wash out. She was working the dirt with her fingertips with that concentration only children have. Whole body. Whole mind. She found an earthworm and turned toward me and held it up in front of my eyes the way you hold something precious. Brown and glistening and soft and alive between her fingers. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I'm thirty-three years old. I've slept in places no one should sleep. I've taken medication that made me slow and others that made me fast and others still that made me nothing at all. And of all of it the most beautiful thing is a three-year-old girl saying look Cal look. Because in that word there's everything a man like me never dared ask for. For someone to find you worthy. Lily didn't know I was broken.
— I wanted to be her father.
I say this out loud. I don't really know to whom.
— I wanted someone to ask her one day who's your dad and for her to say my name. Not his. Mine. I wanted to be that for her. A simple answer. Something that holds when you pull on it.
I stop. I swallow.
— She said Cal. Not Calvin. Cal. Like the rest was too big for her mouth.
The officer says nothing. He looks through the windshield. The cold air keeps coming in through the window. It smells like the garden. It smells like Sunday. The lights are still moving in the yard.
— Where's the mother tonight.
— Cleveland. She's working.
I pause.
— She dances. At a club.
I say dances. I don't say the rest. He writes it down anyway. I see him do it. The fragile boyfriend. The mother who dances. The biological father on drugs. The three-year-old child. The mobile home.
— We'll need to reach her.
— My phone is in the house. On the counter. Next to Lily's cup.
— What cup.
— A cup with a duck on it.
A yellow duck on a blue plastic cup. Beak stretched wide in a smile that existed nowhere in nature. The kind of thing you buy at the dollar store on a Tuesday because the child wants it and a child who wants something is the only law that holds. She drank her milk from it. Always. If I gave her another cup she pushed it away without a word. Two palms flat on the table. And she waited. Patient as a queen. Miranda is dancing somewhere under lights too bright in a room where nobody knows yet that her daughter is no longer in her bed.
— I already tried calling her. When she's working my number doesn't count for much.
An officer comes out of the house wearing blue gloves. He's holding my phone in a clear bag. My cracked case. And on the back the sticker Lily put on Sunday. A purple heart. Crooked. Not crooked like things that go wrong. Crooked like things made with the whole body. The whole hand.
The officer holds the bag out to me through the gap in the window.
— Try again.
The screen lights up. Lily. Crouched in the grass. Eyes squinting against the light. Mouth barely open around a word that never came out. Caught in her mouth. Caught in amber.
I press Miranda. The tone goes out. Then voicemail.
— Hey it's Miranda leave a message I'll call you back kisses.
Kisses. The word floats. I hang up before the end. Her voice is already moving through me too much.
— She's not picking up.
The officer takes the bag back. The phone disappears. I look at the bag. More vehicles arriving. You feel them before you see them. The sound first. The headlights. The doors. The orders, shorter now. The night changes size.
The yard fills with men in vests and flashlights and dogs straining at their leashes. The neighbors come out. Robes and pajamas and bare legs and shoes without socks. Faces swollen with sleep and already hungry for it. Mrs. Delgado crying before she even knows. Peterson talking too loud with his hands everywhere. Old Miller holding his dog so short the animal walks sideways.
Mrs. Hargrove comes out last.
Slippers. Coat over her nightgown. She crosses her lawn without looking at anyone and goes straight to the officer. The one with the stain on his collar. She speaks quickly. Her hands point to the house. To the back of the yard.
The shed.
The officer listens. Nods. Turns. Looks at me.
The canine unit steps out of the van. The dogs set their paws on the wet gravel.
Then Princess starts.
My poodle. My small white dog with her pink ribbon and her eye that always weeps a little. But the barking sounds like nothing familiar. Not the indoor sound. Not the doorbell whine. Something hoarse. Torn. Body rigid in the grass turned toward the back of the yard. She was barking more truly than the shepherds. She was barking like it was the last thing she would ever do.
Toward the shed.
— Let me out. That's my dog. She listens to me. If I talk to her she'll stop.
The officer turns back. Fatigue in his eyes. Stain on his collar.
— Mr. Pruitt you are not leaving this vehicle. That's procedure. We have handlers for that. The best thing you can do for Lily is stay exactly where you are.
He walks away.
Princess keeps going.
The shepherds pull in the same direction. The handlers exchange a look. The lights converge on the dark corrugated metal at the back of the yard. I murmur against the window so low that only the glass can hear me.
— Princess. Princess. It's nothing. I'm here.
Princess doesn't turn around.
Then it comes out louder.
— PRINCESS. IT'S NOTHING. I'M HERE. I PROMISE.
The officer comes back. Comes level with the window.
— Calvin. Calm down. You're disturbing the search dogs. The best thing you can do for Lily is silence.
Silence.
He hands me a bottle of water. I drink. My lip hits the plastic. A little water runs down my chin.
— Thank you.
I look at the shed. I look at the lights converging and the dogs pulling and the men moving toward the dark sheet metal.
He stays there a few seconds. Outside the lights are still moving. I can't hear Princess anymore.
— How long have you and Miranda been together.
— Two weeks.
Silence.
— We met at a facility. A care facility.
Silence.
— She had nowhere to go. Her mother put her out. I said come. Come with the little one. There's room.
— Two weeks, he repeats.
He lowers his voice. Almost soft.
— You know, Mr. Pruitt. People always find out in the end.
He looks at my hands. The bottle is shaking.
— The lithium. I didn't take my lithium tonight. The bottle is in the kitchen. I have to take it at eight o'clock with dinner. But I fed Lily and I forgot mine. When I forget my hands do this.
Silence.
— It's often like that. She eats and I forget. When you're taking care of someone the things you owe yourself come after.
He doesn't answer. Then he says:
— It's not the trembling. It's the scratches.
I look down. They're there. Fine. Red. Parallel. The blood dried long enough ago to have blackened at the edges.
— That's Princess. She scratches when she panics. Poodles are nervous. Tonight there was noise, lights, people everywhere. She got frantic.
The officer says nothing. Then he walks away. Goes to talk to a colleague. The other one looks at the house. Then the car. Then me.
The kitchen door opens. The officer comes back out with an orange bottle in a bag. My bottle. The one I set each evening between the sink and Lily's duck cup.
The officer returns.
— This medication is yours.
He shows me the bottle without bringing it too close.
— I know what you're thinking.
Silence.
— I was seven years old.
I feel my fingers tighten around the plastic of the bottle.
— Foster home. That's what they called it. Home.
Silence.
— Home meant the night. The door opening. The floorboards. The weight on the bed. The hands. And nobody says anything. And nobody will say anything. In the morning the toast is on the table and the hot chocolate steams in the bowl and the woman says good morning sweetheart did you sleep well and you say yes. You say yes. You're seven years old. You say yes.
The officer doesn't move.
— Travis knows where she sleeps. You have to find him. Now. Every minute that passes is a minute too many.
I stop. I press my forehead against the cold glass.
— There are things a child should never learn.
A cry rises from the back of the yard. Brief. Severed. When the lights are searching they go in every direction. When the lights find something they all go to the same place. The shed.
The door is open.
An officer comes out. Three steps only. Then he stops and raises his hand to his mouth.
The neighbors fall silent. Even Peterson. Even old Miller. Mrs. Hargrove has lowered her hands. Mrs. Delgado is still crying but the sound seems smaller now. Like it's coming from another street. Miller squeezes his leash so hard his dog whimpers.
I stay sitting behind the half-open window. The air still comes in. Grass. Earth. Gravel.
And now something else. Something that came out of the shed with the men. A faint smell. Almost absent. But enough to tilt the world.
— The bin. The black plastic bin. On the back shelf. I lifted the lid because I thought she was hiding. Children do that. They hide. They fall asleep sometimes anywhere.
His voice splits.
— I put my hand inside. I touched her cheek first. Then her nose. Then her mouth. I thought she was sleeping.
A silence.
— Then I felt the cold.
The officer approaches the car. He walks straight at first. Then not very straight.
I close my eyes. Sunday her fingers pressing a purple heart onto the back of my phone case. In the photo she's about to speak. In the yard she was holding an earthworm like a treasure. At night I would hold my hand in front of her mouth to feel if she was still there.
The officer yanks the door open. A hand grabs me. He pulls me outside. My knees hit the gravel. My palms fall into the wet grass.
The weapon comes out. I heard the leather and the metal and the safety and after that I heard nothing because the weapon was there.
The barrel stops in front of my face. Behind it something is shouting.
— Put it down. That's an order.
— Put it down.
— Now.
I raise my eyes toward the barrel.
The black circle at the end. It held nothing. It hid nothing. It wasn't even threatening.
— It's you.
I say:
— Do it.
My voice is no longer shaking. My hands are no longer shaking. I don't know when they stopped.
— Do it.
The word in the photo would never have come out of Lily's mouth. I'm on my knees in my yard with my face level with the gun. At the end of the barrel there is a bottomless hole. Something inside me stops resisting.
— I love her.
