Sayemontess- Guiding Light.
Depleted, and run down, Sayemontess had pretty much ended until a straggler, Dimitri, entered the picture. While the castle had been rebuilt to the finest standards, no one was home. Dimitri cried tears of joy as he reached the great castle. Could this all truly be mine? He thought. There had been a light in the heavens that had guided him from the north. He had passed through the gates unseen as if led by God Himself. It was meant to be. It had to be. It had to be all his, but he knew he could not handle it all on his own. Then, he heard a moan from off in the distance. A woman locked in the stocks. Her name- Miranda. She had been locked in the stocks for days. Bitten by the horrible insects of Sayemontess, she cried out one last time hoping for help. She had been tarred and feathered in the neighboring colonies, and was dragged to Sayemontess on a rail in shame for getting pregnant.
“If you can survive this- you can survive everything.” Said her great leader. She was going to be done for, but then came Dimitri to her rescue. As the No-See-Ums ate at her from her insides- she screamed as Dimitri approached her.
“Dear God! What have they done?” He asked as he forced the stocks open with his bare hands. She did not answer for the skunks had clawed at her hard during her capture. She just wanted out, and a nice stint in the showers of the castle she did crave. Dimitri literally dragged the mute woman inside the castle. Who would do this to a pregnant woman? He thought. “I have come from the north!” And this made Miranda scream even more for the north was filled with cannibals, and creatures you would never want to ever meet. As he made the announcement, a small spider crawled out of Miranda’s left ear. She screamed even more, but felt some relief now that she was able to rub her ear freely with her own hands. Dimitri showered her, and found a beautiful, blue dress for her that had been left behind from a previous inhabitant. It was tight as she was quite far along. “I’ll kill whoever did this to you!” He said, but she just cried as the hot shower water hit her bitten, burnt skin. “Can you say your name?” He asked, but she just whimpered and wailed.
Miranda longed for death, but there was the baby to think about. Infertility was rampant at the time, and she had been lucky to get pregnant, but since sex was forbidden out of wedlock in the west- she had been banished, and her lover killed. Thoughts of him filled her mind, and she wept even more.
“Okay, you’re going to cry yourself to death. What can I do?” Asked Dimitri as he got her all cleaned up. “Can I take you somewhere?” Then she screamed again as her water broke.
“No!” She yelled as the baby was coming- the first word he heard her speak. Pain hit her like a bludgeon. Blood filled the shower floors, and Dimitri- who had never even seen a baby before- delivered it right on the spot.
“A girl! You have a girl! Here, wait!” He said as he searched for a piece of paper, and a pen for her to write down her babies new name, and all Miranda could think of was the pen in her hand, so she scribbled down the name, “Penn.”
Penn was beautiful, and Dimitri grew a liking to her at first sight as she did not cry- she laughed instead. She was happy- just like Miranda- to be out of the stocks. Penn had bites on her as the No-See-Ums had reached her while she was in the womb. Dimitri wrapped her in his shirt, and he prayed for the three of them in silence as the new baby giggled. The bites did not bother her. She was a tough one. Yes, perhaps I can help raise this baby here at Sayemontess. He thought, but then Miranda said,
“No.” She grabbed her newborn as she scratched at her aching ear, and, dressed in her new blue dress, she took Penn, and headed east for she hated every second of her short stay at Sayemontess, and she had no regrets of leaving Dimitri behind for she did not even know his name. Dimitri, not knowing what to do with the slowly decaying castle, wept out loud for he did not want to be alone as previously stated- he instantly had grown a liking to the new baby he had delivered. Alone in the showers covered in Miranda’s blood, he shed a few tears, and wandered the castle looking for a sturdy piece of rope. He wanted to die in the beautiful castle surrounded by beautiful things, and he wanted to die quickly as his stomach churned while he thought of poor, tortured Miranda, and sweet Penn. He would carry his memory of Penn’s laughter well into the afterlife, and he did it! He found a long piece of sturdy rope. He climbed the many steps of the castle of Sayemontess all the way to the top. As he looked out across the land, he could hear Penn cry for the first time as Miranda continued her travels east, and he cried with her. Separated- he felt like running after them as he tethered the rope onto one of the concrete gargoyles that had been perfectly sculpted by the previous inhabitants. Would they ever be back? He thought of the previous inhabitants. If I jump, will I just hang here on full display? Will the insects of Sayemontess eat me alive if I don’t die right away? His heart sank, and butterflies filled his stomach as he peered over the edge of the castle’s top balcony. Can I do it? Can I jump, and die alone? Or should I go after Penn? He thought. Then he took hold of the rope. He tied it around his small neck. He stepped to the edge of the balcony. He looked around, and all he felt was loneliness, and he stepped off the ledge.
