I love watching people. Not in a weird, creepy way, I just get bored sometimes. I waft through the wall into the main area of G&T's Diner, on the lookout for drama. That's when I spot one of my favorite couples, they come here for dates every once and a while, always bringing excitement. She's too good for him. I make a beeline for their table, accidentally floating through Emily, one of the waitresses. I might be a ghost, but I still don't particularly like going through people. Walls are fine and all, but people just feels wrong.
Anyways, as per usual, this moron is looking at his phone, ignoring his girlfriend. I've seen this girl cry in the bathroom too many times for this relationship to still be standing. Maybe she'll break it off this time? I always hope, but something about tonight feels like it might actually happen…
Once they've ordered, or more accurately once he ordered over her, rude, she excuses herself to the bathroom. He just waves her off and doesn't even look up from his phone! Like, come on dude!
Enough about him though, I follow Lyla to the bathroom, of course, because drama always happens there. One time, these two best friends, from childhood, had a massive fight in the bathroom. One of them had taken the other one's favorite shirt without asking and had apparently been taking a lot of her stuff and never giving it back. I've seen them around here again so I think they worked it out though. Guys on the other hand, only ever talk about sports and stuff, and ain't no way am I going into the men's just for that. Plus, they have like, urinals and stuff in there, at least in the women's we have stalls, so I don't gotta see all your business.
Moving on, when Lyla got to the bathroom, she checked that it was empty before practicing her breakup in the mirror! Hurrah! She's finally doing it! You're doing so good girl!! I know she can't hear me, but too bad. Maybe her subconscious will register it. Who knows. Not me.
When she gets back to the table, idiot, over here, barely glances up, still on his phone. And he'd eaten all his food, her salad (that he ordered for her) sitting at her place looking sad. He didn't even wait for her. And when I take a peek at his screen, and he's texting another girl. Her contact has hearts in it. This man. No. Child. Does not. Deserve. This amazingly incredible woman.
"Hey… we need to talk."
Yes!! It's happening! I'm so proud!
"Huh?" He's still texting. He even has the audacity to smile at it.
"Um…" she clears her throat and takes a deep breath. "I think we should break up."
"Oh. Okay." At least he finally looked up- "Why?" what do you mean why you-
"Because…" she said, the confidence gone from her voice.
"BeCaUsE?"
"Because you've been undermining my worth as a human being, like what you just did there, and been pushing me down and ignoring me. We've barely talked all night and you ordered over me. I didn't even want the salad."
"Huh. Well, you needed it."
She just looked at him with wide eyes before shaking her head and standing her ground.
"This is why. I want to break up. We're done."
"Alright. Fine." At least he finally accepted it- "You were more like a sister to me anyways." WHAT.
Lyla stares at him blankly, mouth hanging slightly open. He just goes right back to texting. At least he isn't smiling anymore. I try to punch him, slap him, give him a good wallop. Sadly, I am a ghost, and as such my hands just go through him. It's the thought that counts?
Then he just stands up, throwing a "bye" over his shoulder on his way out.
WHO does this man think he is!?
Her head falls into her hands, shoulders shaking. This poor girl, at least she's free of that butt hole. I try to pat her on the shoulder, try to comfort her in any way. But again, I'm sadly merely a ghost, and my hand just goes right through her. Thankfully, Emily, the kind soul, sees her crying and brings a milkshake over, telling her it's on the house.
"You alright? Actually, dumb question. What happened?" Emily asked once Lyla had calmed down enough to hold a conversation.
"Well… after having someone finally point out how horrible he was to me, I finally broke up with him. It's been like a month I've been trying to build the courage to do it, but I've been worried something would go down… and I guess it kind of did. I've always felt inexplicably confident here though, so it felt like the right place to do it."
"I'm so happy for you, and proud you did it!! If you don't mind me asking… what happened? You looked really hurt and surprised."
She's not gunna like this…
"Oh… yeahhh. He, um, said I was more like a sister to him anyways-"
"He said what!? That's… that's actually insane. How could he say something like that? Who would even imagine saying such a thing. Especially to someone who just broke up with them. That's…" Emily let out a breath and shook her head.
"But more importantly, you are amazing, and he's a new level of idiot to have let that come out of his mouth. Especially to someone as amazing as you. That's stupid, and he's stupid. If you ever need anything or someone to talk to, I'm here."
Yeah girl, you tell her!!
"That would actually be… really nice. Thank you. He kind of cut me off from all my friends, so having someone, especially someone kind like you, would be incredible. Thank you again."
"Of course! I'm always happy to help."
So, the grand summary of tonight's drama: Lyla finally lost her trash "boyfriend" and left the diner with a new friend. Good for her, I knew she'd get there… eventually. Anyways, on to the next spectacle…

:) I want to be besties with this ghost! Just imagining what would have gone down in that diner if the ghost where alive makes me smile! They give the impression that they're loyal to a fault and the pep talk would have been incredible and just what Lyla would have needed! Kind of gives off a 'Casper the friendly ghost' vibes. Light and funny. I could see this being a series! Or full book where every chapter highlighted a different scene! Talk about 'fly on the wall'!
