This Great Love.....

Contemporary Fiction Romance

Elvira girded her lady loins and entered the Vaccine Clinic. This was a social norm now, so she had to overcome her hesitancy about having more innoculations. Rules were rules, she always presented well and told the medicos what she thought they wanted to hear. Eventually, her lucky number came up, and she was allocated to a tiny space. Here she sat, inhaling that aroma of medicinals, and quietly quaked a bit.

But this was only a routine, she told herself. The nurses had a job to do, so she was determined not to make a fuss. Then in walked the cutest male Elvira had never imagined before. He had toffee eyes, which seemed to smile at her, behind his mask. His name tag said, 'Boyd". He seemed very efficient, dabbing he skin with an antiseptic, drawing up the vaccine into the syringe, saying, "Don't look, this is only a brief sting."

Elvira turned her head and shut her eyes. Did everything darken for a minute? There was an almighty crash, and she heard a moan of pain. She had not felt a thing. Warily, she opened her eyes, there was Nurse Boyd, collapsed against the cabinet, surrounded by fallen medical equipment. The syringe was still in his hand. ELvira had not been given her vaccine update.

Elvira told herself, "I must not panic. Come on, girl, you have done First Aid. Is there an emergency button to press?" Wondering if she could find another nurse, she briefly scanned the minimal medical office, stood up and knelt over Boyd. She felt his pulse, bit thready. She could not help running her hand over his manly chest, hidden under his white coat. His heart rate was okay, still breathing, but not really alert. The nurse had a lump on the side of his head, so Elvira tried to summon up what she had learnt about potential concussion.

Boyd was groaning. Elvira could not resist, his tender lips looked so lovable. She competently began Mouth to Mouth resuscitation. Elvira found that Boyd had soon stopped moaning, and was kissing her. Their lip sync was unique, or so it appeared. Boyd quickly recovered his alert bits, his lips kissed so warmly. And keenly. "Are you the woman of my dreams? What are you doing on New Year's Eve?"

Elvira was a bit taken aback, she knew saying, "Boys will be boys' was only a stereotype. "Is this your script?" she asked, giggling. She could not help herself. Boyd put his strong arms around her, and cuddled her close. "No, this is my first full day as a nurse. I have already fainted three times. I do not like needles."

Elvira was puzzled. "How did you pass nursing training?"

Boyd did look faint, bit pale and wan. "I regularly went dizzy, my stint in obstetrics was a doozy. The other student nurses covered up for me. I am excellent at exams. Are you named after Mozart's music, you know, Elvira Madigan?"

Elvira replied, "Yes, my mother loved Mozart. Wolfgang teaches that we are all human, part of the divine. Even a nurse who faints giving injections." She definitely could not resist. But then she asked, "But what about my vaccine? I need my certificate to say I have been vaccinated."

Boyd reluctantly let her go, and stood up, pallid, but smiling. " I shall page my boss, Nurse Blanche. I do think I am in the wrong job. There's a nurses' New Year's Eve dance tomorrow night, can you be my date?"

Elvira asked, "I thought nurses liked other nurses. But I would like to dance in the New Year."

Boyd grinned so charmingly, "I think medicine gives me white coat syndrome."

"Looks like it," Elvira commented.

Just then, head honcho Nurse Blanche bustled in, not too impressed with her latest staff member and his winning ways. She checked his vitals, and his pupils, and administered an ice pack from the fridge for Boyd's lump on his head. While she was vaccinating Elvira, Nurse Blanche suggested that Boyd seek a medical check up at the local infirmary. He was not to drive home. Then she waddled back to her duties, muttering, "Men!"

Boyd was looking suitably deflated by superior woman power, so meekly and willingly let Elvira drive him to her home, dodging the local hospital in case of germs. He was totally planning to change his career options after one day as a fully qualified nurse provider. Elvira led him into her apartment at the back of her flourishing plant nursery. Her flat was filled with a display of pot plants, greenery and peace everywhere.

Being a capable chick, she made this hotty nurse a cup of tea, and popped her premade shepherd's pie in the oven. She was a very nurturing kind of gal. Soon, the dulcet tones of Mozart filled the room.

"I always play Mozart to my plants, make them thrive."

Boyd relaxed, as Elvira sat on the couch next to him, hands touched, and his lips melded into hers. Much heavy breathing later, Boyd was staying the night, only platonic until he was checked for concussion. Elvira did not wish for another medical catastrophe on her hands, might upset her ferns.

Enough said, this great love meant that the new couple spent New Year's Eve at hers, waltzing slowly, with lovely nibbles of different kinds. Their skins seemed to melt into each other, Boyd accepted Elvira's invitation to work in her nursery. He had his own ideas, he developed a very profitable and popular line of garden and pot plant ornaments. Those gnomes were his creations.

Yes, Boyd left his white coat syndrome and those gruesome squishy bits far behind him. For any slight mishap, Elvira soon got used to applying band aids and removing splinters. Better that way, preferable to Boyd fainting again over squishy bits and bobs. Their zygotes would emerge from the universe in the usual way. Elvira realised that she would need a different birth coach than Boyd, so she planned to ask her sister to step into the breach. Mozart all the way, but they might learn that any dynasty would have their own musical likes and dislikes. Funny, some nurses do have white coat syndrome. Elvira and Boyd's great love might continue to this very day, and could flow on, despite any setbacks that need to be overcome.
