Drama Suspense Thriller

This story contains themes or mentions of mental health issues.

Written in response to: "Write a story in which two (or more) characters want the same thing — but for very different reasons." as part of The Lie They Believe with Abbie Emmons.

Pass Me My Crayons.

I’ll Tell You All About It

All rise for the honorable Judge Herbert Alan Noel Grant Zhemhol esquire. The bailiff barks out the command to courtroom occupant is stern voice of great authority. O soul in the room had any doubt about the seriousness of the matter at hand and if any had not been present when the count now sitting at an even ten gallery members as well as one of the prosecutions own attorneys have been permanently banned from and proceedings regarding this crimes that the defendant is currently charged with . There will be no excuses for any diversion from the uttermost respectable decorum throughout the remainder if these proceedings Please be seated

Judge HANG Zemhol Speaking with his generally soft spoken voice, which ironically carries a timber that says if the tone were elevated even two levels its force could easily bulge the walls of the courtroom, and as expected, strike fear into every heart in the room . It stands to reason then that his reputation far proceeds his presence. Few have been fool enough to test the waters. Further rumors have it that those that did, did not come up for a breath before being metaphorically drowned in the court house holding cell.

Ladies and gentleman in the gallery please remain seated while I see both parties at sidebar to clear up a couple of things before we proceed. This should take just a few minutes. Then we will bring the jury back in and proceed with the defenses case in chief. So you may speak quietly amongst yourselves. And we will be with momentarily. Thank you.

The Lie Started before the child’s age of awareness and has bee pe ambition was to please her parents in everything she did

Trying desperately to feel whatever it was that was lacking

The bond between parent and child is missing and Allow me to boast just a little. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A FINER EXAMPLE OF THE PERFECT DAUGHTER THE TRUTH THEY WERE JUST DOING THEIR JOBS NOT AS PARENTS BUT AS AGENTS AND THEY STOOD THERE AND ARGUED ABOUT HOWE TO GET OUT OF THIS NOW THAT I WAS OUT OF SCHOOL AND AN ADULT I had out Grown out of my usefulness I HAD BECOME DISPOSABLE BUT WHATS WORSE THEY ARGUED ABOUT WHICH ONE COULD AVOID THE FINAL ORDERS FROM THE DIRECTOR TO TERMINATE MY CONTRACT!!!!! WHAT FUCKING CONTRACT???? FOR EIGHTEEN YEARS I WAS THEIR DAUGHTER NOW I’M AN ASSET WHOM HAS OUT GROWN OUT HER OF SERVICEABLE AGE LIMITS

WHO AM I?? WHAT AM I?? WHERE DO I BELONG?? WHO WILL HOST CHRISTMAS DINNER?? GUESS WHO”S NOT COMING TO DINNER AFTER ALL? I’LL TELL YOU WHO. ALL THOSE THAT PLAYED A HAND IN THIS LIE. THEY KNEW THAT I WAS NOTHING BUT A FUCKING TOOL. JUST A TOOL IN THE AGENTS BOX TO AID IN THE ENTRAPMENT OF, SURELY SOME FINE HUMANS JUST TO KEEP THE NUMBERS UP!! AS THEY PARADED ME ABOUT.> THEY PUSHED ME THROUGH ACADEMICS < ACTING< DANCING< MUSIC LESSONS AND VOCAL TRAINING< GYMNASTICS AND FIGURE SKATING AND TRUST ME PLEASE ALL I EVER DID WAS TRY TO FEEL LOVED WHEN WE GOT HOME ITS TYPICAL TO ALL FAMILY LIFE MINUS ANY EMOTIONAL CONNECTION>> AT TIMES I THOUGHT THEY WERE ROBOTS AND I expected them to expose themselves I spent time with my friends families. With them there was a Normalcy the flowed from everyone in the home. While at my house with the only child and the occasional foster kid. A common comment from kids that stayed overnight with us was “Your family’s weird” I tried for ever to make things perfect for them, as if it were my responsibility I tried to make them proud. Everyone knows how painful it is to fail It hurts. It hurts as an adult and it hurts children deep. And I have watched pain in the faces of the other children when second place wasn’t enough. It wasn’t my fault I never wanted to hurt anyone. In fact it hurt me almost as much to see them in pain, in tears But let me tell you what hurt even more. It was when they were hurting and their parents would console them saying It doesn’t matter sweetheart, we are so proud of you, No matter how you place you are always a winner here, clutching their hearts. WHY NOT JUST FUCKING KILL ME ON THE PODIUM cause if I had known then that I left everything I have ever had out there on the competition floor and I’d have found even more if just one time my parents would show me true love and SUPPORT THAT I JUST WITNESSED FOR A CHILD THAT NEARLY WON I did not get that when I nearly did anything.. I TRIED SO SO FUCKING HARD TO WIN THAT KIND OF LOVE !! THEY SEEMED TO KEEP LOCKED UP SOMEWHERE!!! I Tried I tried I TRIED I TRIED AND I WON>> I EXCELLED IN ALL OF THOSE CATEGORIES RIGHT ON UP TO BEING VALEDICTORIAN AND STILL I get “CONGRATULATIONS HONEY THAT’S TERRIFIC” Trust me please, Because I don’t know how to make it sound even remotely as hollow as it always felt. But to be deadly Clear. It never crossed my mind that Something as Fucked up as the truth was actually happening to me. falls under any definition of normal AND NOW I SIT HERE BEFORE YOU > NOT HEADING FOR UPENN and a Masters degree program BUT Staring at the one way doors of the women’s High Security STATE PENN.

To this day, my eyes register the color red as an orange grey emotionless coating instead of a color at all.

Red anything causes seizures from minor to Grand Maul seizures complete with aura, vomiting and on two occasions, momentary blindness

I should not be on trial here, The entire governmental department that allowed this to happen for eighteen GAWD DAMN years raising an EMPTY SHELL OF OVER ACCOMPLISHMENT and love to give but no love ever felt

I honestly don’t even know if I would recognize it if I tripped over it.. Tell me please members of the jury please tell me what is love what does if feel like to be loved because I honestly don’t know I never have and to them this was acceptable

His last words to me were “You ungrateful little bitch” at least that is what I recall because I believe a mental break flooded me hearing that like migraine explosion resonated though me ripples of pain thrusting shards of my shattered universe stabbing me at a thousand locations and the the undercurrents dragging the daggers from my flesh and with a dual wave force beaching the jagged remains deep into the sand of my internal safe spaces now foreign to me as dangerous as a darkened alley in a place I don’t recognize. I’m not even a real person.. How dare I even expect to be treated like the others what an ungrateful little bitch I am. I am right? Isn’t that what they are asking you to believe ? Ladies and gentleman of this jury. Is that not what they are trying to do here? Are they not trying to pull the wool over your eyes? In a last ditch effort to keep this whole house of infectious rot from crumbling down .. Not only have they raised an empty hollow non human. But they’ve triggered me to take a life! They have brought this into being by raising a child in a heartless environment. A metaphorical Turd polished to look like a diamond and no one could ever be hurt by that right??

They forced me to break a promise that I made to myself and to society a vow. An Oath not once but twice. Two times I took this oath now broken and can not be undone. They destroyed my youth and now my future too. And to top it off they would like to lock up the evidence in a cell for ever. I took, upon entering Pre-Law and Pre-Med courses in my junior year of high school One oath; Do No Harm and the other oath; To Protect and Serve. Both oaths now broken.

Here I sit before you having broken both promises. I sit before you having found out that everything I believed to be true Was a lie. I sit here in my pretty orange one piece the epitome of what a dream daughter could ever be and now, not only never was but now can never be. I am to old to be a daughter again they took that too .

I sit here and I believe not only do I pray you find me not guilty.

But I believe the Judge himself That’s right I know you all make fun of his name, we all have done it, The Honorable Judge Herbert Alan Noel Grant Zemhol or if your prefer, The Honorable Judge HANG Zemhol. Come one say it with me, just once Your honor if I may would you indulge me in this moment as true moments in my life are so few “

Judge Zemhol has been remarkably silent and reserved throughout this entire narrative testimony. He has made no effort to reign in any of the emotional Rollercoaster ride Miss Oemmons story brought us along on. Quite the contrary, even admonishing the prosecution for interrupting twice, early on.

He responds “Of course Miss Oemmons, not only shall I indulge you but I feel it is proper in this moment ot join you in this exercise. Exposing. the dangers of judging by the surface and not the contents. What is it that you would like us to recite?”

“OBJECTION! YOUR HONOR!”\Rings out from the states table.

“Counsel, another word from you and contempt with sanctions will be immediately levied!”

“Miss Oemmons, please continue, what shall we say?

“Thank you your honor. If you would please repeat with me That’s it, I’m sorry your honor.”

“Members of the jury, if you would please upon Miss Oemmons cue, we shall indulge her in what I believe will be a cathartic moment for all of us. Miss Oemmons, whenever you are ready.”

(Inaudible thank you from miss Alli Oemmons microphone and a clearing of her throat, she began)

“The honorable Judge Hangs’emall’. Does not hang them all. Judge HANG Zemhol Please!”

Tears now rolling down Alli’s cheeks. To perfectly match those of the jury and most if not all from both party benches. I could not see if in fact the judge himself had teared up as by this time I made the wailing doorman at the Wizard of Oz’s Gate look stoic in comparison to my own tears.

“I want this”, choked up and tiny weeping squeaks escaped her throat as she recomposed herself and tried again.

“I want this, your honor, If the worse comes to be worse, I want this to be my legacy. Your honor. And with that I have nothing further for the court. The defense rests, your honor.” And the flood gates opened and the noise level in the room along with it grew by volumes.

Judge Zemhol with his head down, appeared to be organizing or searching for something, kept busy for what may have been two solid minutes. As the commotion in the courtroom reached it’s apex and then settled back down to a faint murmur of scattered whispers.

With noticeable difficulty, this seasoned judge began to address the court and the prosecutions table. “With the end of this Narrative testimony by Miss Oemmons The defense has rested it’s case and pursuant to the rules it is the prosecution, the state has an opportunity to cross examine Miss Oemmons testimony restricted to only what has been mentioned during her direct testimony.” Does the prosecution have any questions pertaining to the direct testimony just given by Miss Oemmons?”

“No your honor, we have no further questions for this witness.”

“Very well then May this witness be dismissed ?… Ok, Miss Oemmons You may rejoin counsel at the defense table. Are the parties ready to proceed to closing arguments?

“Very well in that case, Since in Assachusetts it is the Commonwealths’ burden to prove guilt as will be described in the jury instructions. The Commonwealth goes first for closing arguments then the defense will have an equal amount of time but not less than one hour. After which the Commonwealth will have an opportunity to rebut only what is mentioned during the defenses closing. Ok, Any objections?”

“Your honor” from the defense table. At this time we would like to motion the court for a directive verdict. As the Commonwealth has clearly failed to prove any of the elements necessary to reach the level of certainty required by statute. They have nor proved Motive, they have not shown opportunity as the weapon used was unknown to the defendant until the moment of the unfortunate accident . They have fgailed to show consciousness of guilt, as my client did not flee or attempt to hide any element of a crime since she was not even aware a crime had been committed and as of this moment, nor do we Your honor. We have heard in grat detail what Miss Oemmpons has endured throughout her life what remains unclear your honor is what will become of her life going forward.

“Well that was quite the wordy motion from the defense. One might surmise that you have employed the breathy methods of the Gilbetvillain Press for writing services. Impressive? Yes in fact well done. However give the seriousness of the charges levied by the Commonwealth and that it did survive a Grand jury inquiry I am inclined to let this go to the jury as they are the final arbitrator of truth of the matter at hand based on the evidence before them. With that, would the commonwealth care to proceed with their closing argument?”

“Your honor as shocking as this may seem, we fell that any further filleting of the matter will only serve to add to the confusion brought about through the Narrative testimony and we have decidede to leave it in the hands of the jury att this time, if it pleases the court?”

“Thank you Counselor, It does in fact please the court. I’m not so sure the defense feels the same way. Members of the jury. As you have just witnessed. The Commonwealth has decided to spare you the rehashing of the elements of the trial. by not delivering their closing arguments. By this decision, they have preempted the defense form having a last opportunity to address the court With that you may go ahead and proceed to the jury room. All Rise for the jury.”

Three Hours Later:

I have been notified by the clerk that the jury has reached a verdict. Before I bring them in I must make this clear to the gallery and both parties. I will not tolerate a single outburst durring the reading of the verdict If you feel that you can not contain youself ten now is the time for you to exit through the door you entered through. Do not Fool around to find out. Because I promise you will be leaving trough the door to the left of the defendants table. We will not discuss where you go from there. We will let that be a surprise to you. Ok last chance.. Ok then we are ready to bring in there jury. Bailiff. If you will please. All rise for the jury.”

Be seated . Members of the jury I understand you have chosen a foreperson. Would that person please stand. Sir it is my understanding that you have reached a unanimous verdict and that all twelve of you are in agreement is that true?”

“Yes we have your honor.”

Bailiff would you bring the verdict forms to me.”

“I have reviewed the verdict and find it is acceptable to the court. Would both parties please stand for the reading of the verdict. In the matter of The Commonwealth vs Alli Oemmons. On two counts of premeditated murder in the first degree. A charge which carries a mandatory sentence of life without the possibility for parole for each count. We the jury find the defendant Innocent of all charges in this matter. Miss Oemmons having been found innocent in this matter, a finding above a not guilty finding. We will have a brief Discussion after I dis miss the jury to explain what that means for you. Does the Commonwealth wish to poll the jury? The commonwealth has indicated that they do not desire to poll the jury. With that members of the jury it is with my and undoubtedly Miss Oemmons great appreciation we thank you for your service. A you are here by discharged rom this duty and you are free to discuss the matter with whoever you choose and your right to deny any comment at all. If you arer harrassed by anyone in this matter immediately contact this court and that wil be stopped as quickly as you call. Thank you again. Bailiff if you will escort the jurrors from the courtroom and see them safely to their vehicles.

Would another officer please release Miss Oemmons from any restraints and prepare her walking clothing in the green room across the hall. Thank you.

Miss Oemmons if you will, No no, you can remain seated for this. Okay, you prefer to stand. As you heard the Jury has determined that you are innocent of all charges. That is a higher standing in the court than not guilty. With this finding it is the jury's opinion that you never should have been brought before the court under these charges. Quite frankly I am inclined to agree. This is a rare finding
