Chapter 1: Ellion
My entire life I waited for the summer I was 13. The summer I'd be sent off for the summer to Camp Riftwood. The summer of my life meant something. The summer I would mean something. And at last, that summer was here.
“Ellian, slow down. You said you’ll write to us, right??” Mom called after me, as I walked down the stairs, heading to the door. I groaned at her question. “Mom. They have Phones y’know.” She eyed me, making me sigh, “Yes Mom. I’ll write.” She smiled, glad I was complying.
“Thaila. Let the boy breathe.” My dad laughed. Mom rolled her eyes, “Just… Be careful.” She said, getting all misty eyed, “I don’t want anything—” “To happen to the best son in the world. Yeah, I know, you’ve mentioned.” I cut her off.
“We should get to the bus.” Dad noted, checking his watch, “We’re cutting it close.” I nodded, “Yeah, I can’t miss it.” Mom sighed, “We won’t—Wait, Jareth. Do you feel that?” I stopped at the car. As a Faye, my mom had annoyingly good senses. So, if she felt it, it was coming.
And sure enough? It did. A rumble shook under me. I dug my heels into the ground, clinging to the hope I wouldn’t fall. “What’s—Mom?” I said bumpily, spreading my arms out to avoid falling. Something was shaking the ground. I wasn’t sure what. Nor why, but something was.
It made a sudden stop, making me trip and fall onto the pavement. “Well?” I groaned, getting up, “That was… Something?” Dad sighed, helping me up.“You good there Ellian?” I nodded, “Fine. Thanks.” I said, taking his hand. “Well. We should go.” Mom nodded, and I copied her motion. But paused, letting my eyes trace their features. I had never been away from home so long before, I needed to ensure I would not forget them. Not even a little.
Mom had pale—nearly translusation—skin, she was tall with red hair that she had tied back into a braided bun that day. Her pointed ears showed, and she had a bracelet on. A soft blue dress falling to her knees. Dad, however, was a human. And looked far more like me. He had black hair, and sharp blue eyes, and he was wearing a classic flannel with grass-stained jeans. He was shorter than Mom, but tall for most humans.
“Well?” Dad said, “You read bud?” I sighed and nodded, “Ready.”

Thanks.” I said, taking his hand. “Something’s not right.” Mom said, earning an eye roll from me, “Mom, it’s fine.” I told her, even though I had a gut feeling she was right.
“Well. We should go.” Dad sighed, moving on from moms worries. Mom nodded, and I copied her motion. But paused, letting my eyes trace their features. I had never been away from home so long before, I needed to ensure I would not forget them. Not even a little.

“Name?” The old lady with the clip board asked as we walked to the bus with my bags. “Ellion Ward.” My mom answered for me. “The Hybrid?” She asked, writing something down. Causing me to beam. Hybrids were half Mythic half Mortal. I got Mom’s gifts—not that I found them yet—and Dad’s… Well, Dad.
Dad was a Mortal. He didn’t have gifts. Just a normal human. But he was smart and strong. So there’s a win. “Yeah.” I nodded, “One of the best.” I added, making Mom nudge me, “Shush.” She whispered, “Yes, He’s a Hybrid.”
“Go on.” The lady says, “Jean will load your bag in. He’s at the back of the bus.” I nodded and headed over to the back and saw a boy that looked around my age. Dark skin, black, curly hair, stubs of something that looks a little like horns barely sticking out of the sides of his head.
“Oh! Hello.” He said, “That’s your bag?” He asked, I nodded. “Uh, yeah.” I nodded, handing it over. “Jean!” He said, holding out a hand once he loaded my bag into the back of the bus. “Ellion.” I smiled, shaking it. “You got a place to sit yet?” Jean asked, causing me to shake my head. “Awsome, you're sitting with me then. Guessing your a First Summer?” He asked, I blinked, then nodded. “Yeah, super excited.”
Jean smiles, “You should be. I love Camp. Second Summer. Last year? It was worth it.” He rambled, I laughed, “So… Mythic?” I pointed at him. He nodded, “Drankine.” I nodded. Glancing at him. Jean was the first Drankine I met. And he looked exactly like what I thought a part boy, Part Dragon would. “Ellion!” Mom called over, I sighed and said to Jean, “Be right back.” Leading to him giving me a single nod.
“Mom.” I said, half groaning. “I have to go.” Dad laughed at that, “Hold up.” I sighed but obeyed. “Got something for you.” Mom said, her voice all sweet and soft. “What?” I asked, giving my head a tilt.
Dad didn’t answer, he just pulled out a black string from his pocket. It wasn’t until it was fully out of his pocket, I saw a strange shard hanging from the end. “Whoa.” I breathed as he handed it to me. I ran my thumb over it, and it was smooth like metal, but somehow had a rough edge like tree bark.
“This?” Dad said, nodding to the Necklace. “This has been in our family for longer than I will ever know. Keep it close.” I blinked, “It’s mine?” Mom smiled, “Your dad got it when he was your age.” “And my dad got it when he was your age as well.” Dad Added. I laughed, “This is so cool.” I flipped over the Shard and found a soft line cracking across it. “Alright! Triad’s! Load on up! Time to go!” The old lady who checked me in yelled. Triad. A Mythic. A Moral. A Hybrid. I was a Triad. Starting that Day. And I was heading to Camp Riftwood.
Chapter 2: Jean
We zipped past trees on the road to camp. I sighed, glancing over at Elliton next to me. He yawed and pulled something out of his pocket. “Hey!” I said as he pulled out a weird metal shard attached to a black string. “What’s that?” Elliton laughed, “An Heirloom. My Dad gave it to me right before we had to leave.” He explained, “It looks like something that got burned by fire.” I said, leaning in to examine the Shard more closely. Triad nods, “I guess it does. Bet you know a lot about that don’t you?” I chuckled at that, “Eh, Not really. I haven’t really found my fire breathing gift yet. But I want to by the end of the summer.”
“What can you do then?” Ellion asked, “Oh, I found my Ember breathing. It’s sorta like fire breathing, but it’s more little sparks and smoke, but mostly just heat. I can’t control it yet though.” I explained. Ellion smiled, “I wonder what gift I’ll earn. I’m hoping it’s the super senses my mom has.” Ellioton said, a small smile creeping onto his lips.
I smiled, “That’d be pretty cool. Wouldn’t it?” Ellion opened his mouth to respond, but the driver cut in before he could. “Alright Triad’s! We have arrived at Camp Riftwood!” A round of applause echoed around the bus. Excited shrieks came from a few campers around the bus.
Ellion And I walked out of the bus and made our way to a line. “So… What do we do?” He asked, looking around, taking everything in. The trees, the buildings, probably the smell too. Just like every camper does, it's their first time they come to Riftwood. “We wait in line, you go to the table over there.” I pointed to the table a little bit away with two staff members sitting down. “And we get sorted. Or well, checked in in my case. If you were already sorted into a cabin, they just check you in. Make sure you're here. It’s easy and quick. Don’t worry.” I explained, and he nodded. “Okay.” He said softly.
“Name?” The guy sitting at the table asked me when I walked up to the table with Ellion. “Jean.” I smiled, “Jean Kade.” The guy nodded, “Ember cabin?” He asked, his voice sounding bored. “Yup!” I nodded, He crossed off a name on his clip board and turned to Ellion. “Name?” He smiled, “uh, Ellion. Ellion Ward.” The guy looked down and said, “Got it. We need to scan you.” He said, “Scan. Me?” Ellion asked under his breath, eying me a little.
I chuckled, “It’s just seeing where your genes want you. Just spit in a cup and you’ll be done in like five minutes.” I explained.
After Ellion spit in the cup the guy gave him, and the guy handed it to the girl beside him to add it to the system. “Uh, West?” I girl said, showing the guy the screen of the scanner. “What’s going on?” I asked, confused. West looked up and said, “Ellion. Your genes are showing a pattern that we have never seen. We can’t sort you.”
