Scene 1: The Moment of Truth
*She’s sitting on the floor, stomach twisting, test hidden behind her back. He notices.*
Him: Baby… why you sitting on the floor? Your stomach hurting again?
Her: Yeah… my stomach’s acting up.
*She quickly hides the test behind her back, on top of her underwear, trying to act casual.*
Him: We should get you checked out. Now.
Her: I know… it happens every day.
Him: Do you need anything?
Her: Water… cold, if we have any.
*He leaves and returns moments later with a glass of water.*
Him: Anything else?
Her: No.
Him: You sure?
Her: Yes.
*He exits. She quietly cries, clutching the test. Flashback: her trembling hand holding the pregnancy test, tears silently falling, heart racing.*
*She pulls out her phone and calls her friend.*
Her: Hey…
Friend: Girl… why you sound like that? What’s wrong?
Her: Nothing…
Friend: Stop with the bullshit. Every time something’s wrong, you expect me to figure it out. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Tell me or I’m hanging up.
Her: Okay… damn girl!!
*Her voice cracks.*
Her: I’m… pregnant.
Friend: WHAT? Are you serious? Are you okay? Did you tell him?
Her: No… I’m still trying to convince myself.
Her: I… I don’t even know how I’m going to raise a child. I can barely take care of myself.
Friend: Stop looking at the negatives. This is life, yes it’s scary, but it’s a blessing. Motherhood.
*Her cries intensify. Her friend listens silently, wishing she could say something to fix it, but knowing nothing will make it instantaneously better.*
Friend: Get yourself together before he comes back. You can’t break down in front of him.
Scene 2: Shower Revelation
*Bathroom. Water runs. He’s facing away, washing his face. She stands behind him, tension thick.*
Her: I… I have something to tell you.
**Him:** What’s good?
Her: I’m… pregnant.
*He freezes, water dripping down his shoulders, then bolts out of the shower. Towels wrapped awkwardly around both of them.*
Him: You’re… pregnant?
Her: Yes.
Him: Are you sure?
Him: How many tests did you take?
Him: How many weeks late?
Her: Two tests. Three weeks late.
Him: …No.
Him: Why didn’t you tell me?
Her: You know how my period is… never really accurate.
Him: Still… not a valid reason. What happened to communication?
Her: …
Him: Always screaming about communication… and now this?
Him: We need to figure out if we’re keeping it because right now… I’m not sure we can handle it.
Her: (storming out)
Her: Did you even ask me how I’m feeling? What I want?
Him: … I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. You just… came out of left field.
Her: I’m not surprised I’m pregnant! All the chaos… everything we’ve been doing… it’s like COVID, coronavirus, whatever needs to get the heck out immediately.
Her: All you want is sex.
Him: But you… you’re always down too.
Her: True. But I need a break. Morning, afternoon, before work, after work… come home at night, all the time. I miss life. I miss sports NBA, NFL, ESPN, just laughing at a game or a meme without worrying about… this.
Her: I laughed at all the “I’m pregnant” memes online… and now, who’s the big dummy? Me.
Scene 3: Processing Reality
*Later. They’re both calmer, sitting across from each other. Her friend is still there, supportive but giving space.*
Her: I’m so dumb… everyone’s going to laugh at my big goofy self.
Him: No one’s laughing. I promise. Them hoes gonna hate if anything.
Her: Social media? Gone. Only my circle will know.
Her: And stop pretending the pull-out method works 100% of the time.
Him: …I know. Both of us made mistakes. I’ll take the blame. I got you pregnant. I’m sorry.
Her: So… what now?
Him: I… I’m not ready. At least not right now. But if we decide to have this baby, I’ll be here. I’ll provide. We’ll figure it out together.
Her: I’m scared. I didn’t plan for this.
Friend: Both of you are scared. That’s normal. Talk. Plan. That’s all you can do.
Him: Whatever we decide, I’ll be here. Pampers, bottles, midnight feedings we’ll handle it. We’ll learn together.
*They stare at each other, realizing the weight of what’s ahead and the strength in facing it together.*
Scene 4: Confronting Responsibility**
*The morning light filters in. They sit at the kitchen table, silent for a moment.*
Her: I just… don’t want us to break apart. I need to know… we’re in this together, right?
Him: I’m not going anywhere. I don’t know everything, but I’ll figure it out. With you.
Her: We’re going to have to make sacrifices… I can’t even imagine some of the things we’ll go through.
Him: I know. But I also know… we’ll grow. Together.
*She takes a deep breath, the first small smile breaking through the fear.*
Her: Okay… let’s do this. One step at a time.
Him: One step at a time. And I promise, I’ve got you. No matter what.
Scene 5: Rebuilding Trust & Hope
*Later that day, her friend leaves, giving them privacy. Silence stretches for a moment, then he speaks softly.*
Him: I’ve been thinking… if we have this baby, it’s not just about providing. It’s about being present. Listening to you. Being a team.
Her: I don’t want to argue all the time. I need… patience. Compassion. And honesty.
Him: I can do that. I need to learn… but I want to try.
Her: We’re going to have to talk about everything. Money. Work. Parenting. Social life. Everything.
Him: And we will. I don’t want to mess this up. I don’t want to lose us over fear or stress.
Her: I’m scared, but… if we stick together, maybe we’ll make it.
*He reaches across the table, taking her hand gently.
Him: We will. I can’t promise it’ll be easy. But I can promise… I’ll be here. With you. Through everything.
For the first time, she feels a tiny bit of peace. The fear hasn’t vanished, but the burden feels lighter knowing he’s willing to fight with her not just for the baby, but for their relationship.*
