Those red eyes

Fiction Horror Suspense

Written in response to: "Write about a character who wakes up in the middle of the night, or is unable to sleep." as part of What Keeps You Up at Night.

I'm terrified of the dark, not because I don't know what might be hiding, no the opposite, I KNOW there is something in the dark, I saw it. I make sure my light bill is paid, because I don't want to go back there, I can't go back, not after that night. I always sleep with at least a dim light, grown man with a night light, I don't care what someone might say, they weren't there that night. I still remember it, I can't forget, it's there I know it is.

we were kids, we knew it was a monster, we knew it was watching us, but mom and dad just said it was our imagination, too much sugar before bed, God why didn't they listen!

We were in the living room, a sleepover, nothing special, just two kids eating pizza, drinking soda, and playing video games. We left the T.V on, i know we did but my mom must've turned it off when we fell asleep.... I don't blame her, how could she have known.

I don't know how long it was after she turned it off before it found us, I remember the feeling of my friends gently shaking me awake, I open my eye, the room is barley lit by cloud covered moonlight, he pointed to the nearby window, and I saw them.... those eyes.... Those red eyes, surrounded by nothing but darkness. I remember almost jumping off the ground before my friend stopped me, telling me not to scream.

At first I thought it was either a prank or I was just dreaming, but then it blinked, once, then again, and again as I hear the sound of something rubbing and thumping the window... "it's trying to get in." my friend whispered, my heart sank and i felt a every nerve in my body telling me to run. It hits the window again, this time we hear the wood of the sill crack a little, we get up, we run as fast as our legs can take us to my parent's room.

we burst into the room, my mom jumps scared, my dad confused, some rage building from being woken, we tell them what we saw and they jump into action. They were like superheroes, I remember feeling so much relief, I calmed down a bit cause my mom was holding me and my friend as my dad lead the way with a bat. he turns on the light, nothing, he moves cautiously to the window.... Nothing, he goes to the back door with a flashlight, my mom is trying to get an explanation from us. We give her an account of what we saw, what we heard, tears falling from our eyes from fear, from the event or the thought of being punished if we were wrong, I don't remember, I do remember what happened next.

"Are sure you weren't just having a nightmare and made each other scared?" It stung, not being believed, I'm not going lie. "That's it, no more soda next time" my dad shouted, carrying the bat, and the flashlight he used to scout the yard "I have work in the morning" he's walking to the hall "it's one in the damn morning" he's reaching for the light switch "now go back to bed!" He flips the switch, he's about to say something else, but then he freezes; he is looking behind us and then my mom turns her head to see what took his attention so suddenly. my friend and I don't turn around, we know what they are seeing, my mom grabs both of us "kids step back!" she says as my dad charges forward with bat in both hands, I hear his stomps as I then hear glass shatter. I close my eyes, my mom screams as I hear my dad grunting "dammit get them out of -" he suddenly goes silent, I want to look but I'm scared.

we make it to my parent's room, my mom locks the door as she looks for her phone, my friend is in the corner, hugging his knees "I want to go home, I want my mommy!" He shouts, I don't know what to do, my mom is talking, shouting for the police as I hide under the bed. Then comes the banging, something strong, something big against the door, I pray its my dad but then i hear the cracking, like thunder from the door splitting apart. My friend screams, my mom yells for it to spare us, but it doesn't listen, it grabs her, I hear her trying to scream, I then hear the faint sounds of little thumps coming from the hallway. A final attempt to survive, but it turns it's large shadow like form and quickly hunts him, that was my chance, I ran to the bathroom, I locked the door and turned on all the lights and sat in the tub for protection, even as i heard the screams, all i did was cover my ears and pray louder that I'm spared.

I don't know how long they took, it could've been hours, it could've been seconds, but the moment I saw the red and blue lights, from the windows, I just felt all the energy leave my body, almost like someone just took the battery right out of me. my memory gets fuzzy around this time, but I remember a policewoman finding me, I remember the sound of medic asking me questions I never answered... I remember the police doing their best to block my view of the living room as they carried me out, there was so much blood, he looked so scared.

Then I remember the doctors and nurses treating me as they discussed how I was doing, I didn't pay attention, I just looked out the window and then I saw them again. I panicked, I started crawling off my bed, begging the doctors to save me, to make it go away as I pointed towards the window, towards the two red orbs floating in midair. A nurse moves forward; I beg her not to as the doctors try to keep me still, but she's at the window and "it's just plane lights" comes out as she points up "see?" I don't believe her, I try to run but then I feel woozy again and I hear the doctors shouting before I finally close my eyes.

After that my life wasn't different from any other orphaned kid, my grandparents took me in they understood when I begged for a night light, but they grew concerned when I started to carry my dad flashlight around everywhere. They probably thought I did it because I missed him, I do, but the real reason is that I never want to be in the dark again, because I know it's still there, just waiting for me to turn off the lights. I see it sometimes in the distance, everyone tells me I'm crazy, but I still see those eyes, those red eyes, those big red eyes in the dark.
