Tasha’s Story

As Tasha placed her phone down on the bed, she felt nothing but happiness. She had just spoken with her boyfriend, and he had some things to do today but will call her later. She was so happy. He had become the man of her dreams. She had known him for years but this past year, things had become serious. She knew what the future would hold. Lots of traveling, lots of family function and great sex, if the past meant anything. She can’t remember being so happy.

Before she got ready for the day, she decided to check out Facebook. And there it was. In just a few minutes, her whole world came crashing down. Her boyfriend was there with his parents and other siblings, celebrating his wedding that was to take place in just a few hours. Tasha could not understand. What was happening? She was lost for words, and her brain was in a fog. As she walked around the house with tears streaming down her face, she took her right hand and placed it on her left side. She did not feel her heartbeat, just hollowness and emptiness. She knew she was still alive, but how?

Tasha doesn’t know how long she was there, but she found herself sitting on the floor. She could not stay there. She had to get herself together because her father was coming over and she was taking him shopping. She had to hide all she was feeling that day. She knew that if she could put on a happy face that her father would not be any wiser. He was not the type of man who paid much attention to women feelings. So, she wiped her tears, took a hot shower, and prepared for the day.

Her father Tony came as expected and went off shopping when they went. He had decided he was the only one to go to one store and do all his shopping there. That was fine with Tasha because she really wasn’t in the mood, but she would keep her promise. She really needed the distraction, but she could not wait to get back home, so she could be alone with her thoughts.

As she stood on her porch waving goodbye to her father, she was grateful he had to get back home. She was happy that she lived alone because today was not the day for discussion with anyone except her boyfriend. Then it hit her; he was not her boyfriend, but he was going to become someone’s husband today. She just could not wrap her head around what she saw on Facebook.

She usually did not drink, but she had a bottle of Grey Goose in the house, and she could think of a better time to drink to forget the pain. She checked her fridge to see what she had. Then she googled and found that she could add cranberry juice and grapefruit juice. She made herself a very large drink and cried herself to sleep until her phone rang.

It was him. But how could it be. He was just married today. “Hello”, she said quietly, trying not to let the hurt be heard over the phone. “I didn’t know how to tell you,”. “Remember, I tried to break it off months ago” was all he was allowed to say. She hung up.

She remembered. Just 2 months earlier, he tried to break it off with her saying because of the distance he wanted to end it. She begged him not to, so they kept seeing each other and talking daily. But as hard as she tried, she could not remember him ever saying he had another girlfriend or that he was going to get married. No, he actually said just the opposite.

Tasha cried herself back to sleep that night. She did not want to think about facing the world after the events of the day. The hurt, the shame. She just wanted to sleep. And sleep she did. With the help of the Grey Goose, she slept well into Sunday afternoon. She missed church.

She also missed Him calling her again. She laughed. She would make sure he was too tired to call anyone if he had married her. But he didn’t. Once again someone else was chosen. But that’s another story. Alway the bridesmaid never the bride.

It was 9pm and Tasha was getting things together for work the next day. She was also trying to figure out what she would tell her coworkers who knew they were dating. She thought this was another reason to not have your coworkers as friends on Facebook. That was a rule she stuck with no matter who wanted to be friends.

Around 11:30pm, he called again. She didn’t know why she asked but she did. This time he only says, “I’m sorry” and then hangs up. She cried herself to sleep again.

The next morning as she tried to get ready for work, she decided that she was not ready to face the world. She called in and lied that she was sick and would be back tomorrow. Tasha went back to bed.

As she laid around the house, she thought about the prior weekend, they have traveled together to Chicago. It was wonderful. They talked about the future, but never did he mention he was engaged.

Chicago was great. They flew in and went to the Blues Festival. It was crowded but it was fun going around to all the vendors and the music and food was great! They talked about going to Savannah again. So, why was she out and another woman was in?

This past Saturday, in a mere minute she went from being on top of the world to really wanting to die. She decided today that no one would know of such a deception that had occurred in her life. She also thought about the family members who she thought she was getting close with but obviously knew of the other woman. She cared nothing about them being family, someone should have told her or at least given her a hint that they were someone else. It is true, it’s a thin line between love and hate. And he and his family had just crossed that line.

I enjoyed reading Tasha’s story; it powerfully captures the shock and heartbreak of discovering a painful truth. The emotional journey feels very real and makes the reader empathize deeply with what she goes through.
