A Touch of Colour

Written in response to: "Write a story that involves a reflection in a mirror."

Happy Inspirational Sad

Everyday was as dull as the next. The once vibrant life she possessed had diminished over time, leaving nothing but blotches of black and white to cloud her vision. Her shoulders were slumped as she dragged her feet across the glacial floor everyday. Long hazelnut locks always covered her face from view as her formerly bright mahogany brown eyes gazed lazily at the floor. Everyday seemed to repeat itself over and over again; she was sick of it. Her tired gaze had always locked eyes with the reflecting item gleaming back at her.

She would always stand in front of the mirror, repelling away from her silhouetted figure in the mirror. Her lazy stare would always gaze into the eyes of the large figure hiding in the corner of the reflection. The demon that always hovered in her mind smiled at her from the corner, causing sickening thoughts to run around like ticking time bombs in her mind. The demon in the corner of the mirror stood up and heavily approached her small hunched reflection, staring back at her with eyes that screamed help me. Her body went ridged, frozen in fear as she watched the demon approach her slowly with small and cautious steps.

A minute voice in her mind was screaming at her to wake up...to snap out of this nightmare she was reliving day after day. She waited for that glimmer of hope, that light at the end of the dark tunnel - but there was nothing. The creature had long augmented into an emotional shackle, pulling her, like an anchor, into the depths of the abyss. It was as if the demon tied her down with weights and threw her to the bottom of the ocean, causing her to thrash around, waiting for the help that never came.

Her breathing came out short as she squeezed her ears until all that could be heard was her irregular heart beat. Her whole body fell to the floor as if her legs had suddenly turned to jelly, causing her to land with a loud thud. Her wide eyes pierced through the mirror, glancing at the black figure that was towering over her small frame, causing a small shiver to run down her spine, accompanied by a bead of cold sweat. The figure’s' cold dark eyes glared into her own, causing her mind to shut down. It's dark colours slowly started to flutter across her eyes, gradually blinding her and causing her body to go cold as she stared at her reflection with empty eyes as the thoughts consumed her yet again. Her mind and body went numb. It felt like she was free falling. There was no gravity pulling her down fast, and she felt like she was in a continuous loop. She felt calm as a small glimmer could be seen in her reflective eyes.

Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she gaped at her reflection that was steadily smiling warmly at her. A floral scent mixed with fresh rain wafted through the air as she glanced back at the demon, watching it slowly turn to bright French marigolds and summer double roses. It shrieked in fear and she felt the shackles slowly falling off of her small pale wrists. The sight of the vibrant colours caused her eyes to enlarge as her mouth opened and closed like a fish. Her heart sped up as she looked with wonder filled eyes all over the mirror. She shakily stood to her feet and reached her small hand out to touch the floral pattern that was leisurely covering the mirror, causing small diamond-shaped tears to well up in the corner of her eye. Her face scrunched up as a wide smile appeared on her face, causing her eyes to twinkle like the abundance of stars in the night sky. Little strings of colour slowly glide out of the mirror, intertwining with each other as if it were pieces of thread getting stuck together.

Her eyes were drawn back to the floral pattern that had covered her mirror. Her fingers softly traced each flower with little translucent water droplets falling from her eyes. She felt calm. She felt free. She wasn’t drowning anymore, nor was she tied down. She could see the light at the end of the dark and mysterious tunnel, calling her name, waiting for her to step through to start her new life full of freedom and joy. Her eyes shut as the warmth flowed all over her skin as if a little river was flowing softly down a mountain.

She opened her orbs, waiting for them to adjust and saw the most perfect thing ever. Tones of reds, blues, pinks and greens flew across her room as if it was a blank canvas waiting to be finished. The small threads of colour slowly started to fade into the furniture of her room, creating a picturesque arrangement. Her eyes darted furiously around her room over and over again, looking at the magical sight as the colour started to bring everything to life. The lilies in the corner of her room darted upright from the touch of the colour creating a beautiful contrast with the early morning sunrise.

She ran to her window, sticking her head out and gasping in shock. Tears welled from deep inside and coursed down her cheeks as her eyes zoned in as the streaks of purple and orange blended beautifully in the sky. It was as if it had been drawn by the Greek god Iris. Her heart beat sped up as she saw the emerald green trees dance with the wind. The soft lime green grass flew back and forth with the trees as well as the little dandelions that swayed on the floor. She was in awe. Her eyes glanced shyly back at her mirror only to be met with her reflection. She cautiously stepped towards the mirror and saw perfection instead of flaws. She saw the colours instead of the dull grey clouds, causing a soft smile to appear on her face as she gazed into her honey coloured eyes. She let out a small laugh as she sprinted towards the middle of her room, twirling around in circles before facing the mirror again. She watched as the flowers slowly faded from view, only for the colours of the rainbow to replace them, leaving her a blubbering mess. She forgot what true colour looked like. She forgot the vibrancy of each hue and the comfort it gave her. She forgot every colour of the rainbow, and now, she was seeing it all.

Awesome story, Taylah. I really envy you because you described every moment and emotion so perfectly. I suck at description.
Personally, I think it would be more perfect if you include more characters and dialogue.
Overall, I love and admire how you described the whole story.
