Mel and the Wish
Mel was sitting in her room on a Tuesday evening around 7:30PM when she heard a CRASH coming from downstairs. Wondering what the crash was, she tip-toed out of her room where she had been hiding because her parents were screaming at her. In their minds, she was the reason why their lives were so hard, because she was never supposed to be born, her parents never wanted kids.
As she peered over the railing at the top of the stairs, she saw her parents fighting and quickly noticed what had caused the crash, a ceramic vase that her mother had made in high school had fallen off the table.
“Why would you do that?! I made that in high school!!” Mel’s mom screamed.
“Ask me if I care?!” Mel’s dad responded.
Here they go again, Mel thought to herself as she sighed and shook her head, a little disappointed. As she turned around Mel noticed a trail of faint fog silvery and swirling leading her from the top of the stairs to her bedroom door. As she entered her room she saw a golden glow coming from the back of her closet reflecting across her room. Her closet door was wide open, which was weird because she was certain it was closed before she left. But then Mel’s eyes went wide as she went to the closet. The only time she had seen glows like that were in Disney movies.
As if it were like magic, the light seemed to lift her up and pull her over to her closet, then dropped her right in front of the door, a foot away from going inside. When she looked inside to see where the glow was coming from, she saw a genie lamp. On it it had writing that said,
“I will grant your wishes, make them come true,
call upon a genie when you are feeling blue.”
Mel hesitated before realizing what this could bring her, in luck or whatever she wanted. As she started rubbing the lamp, fog swirled up and out came a Genie. In the center of the fog the genie pulled a string of a confetti popper. POP! The rainbow confetti swirled down around them while Mel stared at the Genie, and her jaw dropped. Mel tripped on her foot in shock and fell back onto her bed.
Mel stood up away from her bed, and stared at the Genie. “Hi!” the Genie said jumpscaring her after disappearing for two seconds, Catching Mel off guard again, making her jump backwards, and shriek.
“I grant you only one wish.”
“I thought it was three wishes,” Mel said, disappointed.
“Well,” the Genie started, “People kept tricking me into giving them
infinite amounts of wishes. For example, they’d ask for notebooks where whatever you draw comes to life, and they’d draw more Genies. Or if their name was Charity, they’d ask to give all the unlimited wishes to Charity, like an organization , and so on.” Mel considered what he said. “So what wish do you want granted?”
“I wish for 2 more wishes.” Mel said.
“Sorry, no can do, I just told you I can’t give you more wishes,” the Genie replied. “Also, the wish you make is irreversible. So think carefully.”
“Fine” Mel said as she took a moment to think, “then I wish for my parents to be all lovey dovey again, no more fighting. They can only play-fight about cute things, like who’s cuter and who wins in the cuteness contest. .”
The Genie snapped three times and he did the Macarena then said, “Consider your wish granted!” Fog swirled and twisted around the Genie then one second later it was gone with the genie right along with it.
The next day Mel woke up at 7:00am and heard her parents giggling.
“You’re cuter,” said Mel’s mom, while giggling.
“No, you’re cuter,” Mel’s dad responded very seriously.
“But you’re cuter!” Mel’s mom said making puppy dog eyes while batting her eyelashes.
“No, I said you’re cuter,” Mel’s dad said.
They were dancing to the music they listened to when they were dating, like 70s, 80s and 90s music. They were also trying to bring back their old slang. They were also calling each other Pet names, like baby, hon, etc… and always giving “that look” at each other (the one you give to your Bf/Gf, When you are just so in love that you look at them with sappy eyes and almost drool. ). Mel cringed, realizing now that she hated having her parents act like they were dating again, and thought to herself, What have you got yourself into, Mel?
Mel could no longer reverse the spell on her parents and just had to live with it. But then, the Genie stopped by once more, and laughed at the state of her family. Mel’s jaw hit the floor again.
“How did you escape the lamp?” Mel asked, confused.
“Somebody used their wish for good, and it set me free,” the Genie responded like it was obvious.
“Hold on, I thought the lamp is with me, how the heck did someone else get a hold of it?” Mel asked, very confused.
“Well, once you use me once, the lamp teleports to the next person to use it.” Mel’s mind was teaming against her, half of her liked watching her parents embarrass themselves and being in love, the other half hated watching her parents embarrass themselves and being in love.
“I have a question for you, do you think you can reverse my wish? I honestly liked it better when they were arguing roughly, not about who’s cuter,” Mel asked.
“I can, but you can never reverse it again, AND you can never wish for anything ever again. Think about it carefully,” the Genie answered.
“YES! Anything for them to go back to normal, PLEASE.”
The Genie did the macarena again, then snapped his fingers three times.
“Okay, done” the Genie said, “They are back to normal.”
CRASH!!! Mel guessed another vase slammed to the floor.
“How dare you!” Mel’s mom shouted in the background.
“Yeah,” said Mel laughing, “They are most definitely back to normal.”
