The story never ended.
My life has been nothing but chaos, 2 parents, 9 siblings, and I’m the oldest of them. Isn’t my life just great? Its not. Don’t say it is. “Milly!” Mom shouted, I came down the stairs three at a time, if it was something important it would be a problem.
All that was there was two hungry 4th graders. “Milly feed your siblings, I need to get to work!” Mom said quickly already halfway out the door. “Ok…” I said already turning to the kitchen.
“Ok guess I’m making you two breakfast” I sighed taking pieces of bread out, making two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Jason, and Wilson thanked her for breakfast before walking upstairs.
I walked outside walking to the back yard and disappearing. This was always the plan, nothing was different that day, nothing made her second guess. A backpack wait for her about halfway to the river, once she passed that she would be a free girl, in America.
I exhaled as I picked the bag up, I was almost there. The smell of freedom was far away, but close enough to keep me moving. As a walked I thought about everything…
What happens to Maria
What about James and Wilson
What will they eat tonight?
Memories spiraled in my head, everything I had done, every tournament I’ve watched, every swim and dance meet. I sighed, knowing this was my only chance to be free. After hours of walking.
The sound of rushing water filled my head, the river had shrunk just a little, probably due to the little rain fall we’ve had. I took a breath before finding the log that connected America to Canada.
With a quick leap I landed onto the top of the log, the old dead bark groaned when she started walking. Her arms were out, balance was key here. The log shifted as she hoped down, looking back at the side she once called home.
I spun on my heels, walking to what would hopefully to my new life.
To my surprise, after hours of walking I was offered a ride. “Hey little Miss, where ya heading?” A man asked. Now I know not to trust strangers, butttt. “I’m heading to the city.”
Now I was trying to get to Pennsylvania, I guess this guy thought something else.
“Great! I’m heading to the city myself. Hope in the bed of my truck, I’ll take ya there.”
I hoped into the bed, sitting down my legs finally getting a break. I leaned my head back falling asleep for what felt like minutes. I jolted awake when the breaks hit and I was moved. The man hopped out of the truck his keys jingling in his pocket.
“Come on kid, lets get something to eat.”
The sky had turned a light orange with spirals of pinks and yellows. We walked into a diner, about the size of maybe a smaller house. The place smelled of fresh eggs, and coffee. We sat down in a booth, the man across from me.
“So what brings a girl like you into the suburbs of New York?” The man asked as a waitress came over. “Ahh! Welcome in Ashton, who’s this? Another ‘lady friend’” The waitress laughed to herself. She felt her face go a little red.
“Ah the lad’s a run away.”
That word hit me like a truck. Run away
The waitresses smile faltered for a second. “Ah, that’s ok. What would ya like honey?” The lady asked now looking at me. My face went hot, I had no idea what was here.
I was zoned out, my mind was racing to find an answer, anything really.
“Just bring her ‘The Moxy’” Ashton said seeing my panicked expression. The woman nodded and she walked off.
After diner we walked out, the sky was now a black puddle of stars. The air was warm still, june was the nice weather before the storm for us.
“Alright kid, gotta get back on the road again.” Ashton said opening his truck door.
I nodded hopping into the bed of the truck again. I laid my head down on the back of the truck, watching the stars as the truck crossed through cities and fields.
Finally bright lights came into view. The city. My eyes widened at the lights, I could see them through the front window.
Ashton opened the back window connecting the cab and the bed of the truck together. “About another hour till were there!” He yelled at we kept going, the lights were beautiful at night.
Maybe this could be my new home. I thought to herself.
I sighed her head falling down, i watched the lights grow bigger and bigger. “Finally Pennsylvania” I said forgetting the window was open.
The truck stopped.
“Why are we stopped?” I asked seeing Ashton look back at me “You wanted to go to Pennsylvania? I thought you meant New York?” He looked lightly panicked
I froze looking at the lights. I wasn’t in Pennsylvania, I was in New York City.
My eyes widened. “Its ok….” I said hesitantly. “Ill just have to figure another plan out” I sighed seeing another problem. I had no idea what made NYC so special. “Alright kid, if you say so.”
We started driving again, pulling into what looked like a bus stop. “Come on, we’ve gotta catch a bus before the next one leaves.” Ashton said stretching. I jumped out of the car the sky was a lighter shade of gray.
Ashton bought us both tickets and we unfortunately had to wait 45 minuets for the next bus.
“Woah, this place is massive” I looked in awe at everything, all the buildings. Everything was amazing here. I shifted over closer to the window, my face practically squished against the glass.
Ashton laughed and the bus finally stopped. After everyone was off and we walked out of the bus station I saw everything for the first time.
I turned in circles looking around. “Hey Ashton” I said turning around my smile fading.
Ashton had disappeared
