“Amy, this is your mother. I didn’t call for anything—I’m just sitting in the Costco parking lot, waiting on Daddy to finish shopping. I thought I’d see if you had a few minutes to chat. Call me back, I’ve got gossip. About the neighbor, Betty. You’re gonna want to hear it.

Anyway… have a great day. I love you. Call me back.”

Hey Mom. Sorry, I just saw your missed call. I had to work late and I’m exhausted. I’ll call you tomorrow on lunch… or after work, okay? Miss you guys. Love you too much.

Okay baby girl. Nothing important, I was just missing you. Get some rest. Talk to you tomorrow. Love you more.

Is it tomorrow yet? You forgot your mommy again. Call me!

From: Daughter

Okay yeah, I suck lol. I’m sorry. Work is insane right now. Two of my servers are on vacation and Jen was supposed to cover, but her kids came home with strep yesterday, so I basically live here now.

Promise, promise, promise—I’ll call you tomorrow. Love you.

“Hi, the Mommy.”

“Holy shit, you answered the phone! David—write this on the calendar, Amy answered her phone!”

“I did. I expect a gold star. What’s going on?”

“Daddy got good news from his doctor. Well… I guess it depends how you look at it. He does not show any signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s. Turns out he’s naturally ditzy.”

(laughter)

“He’s not ditzy, Mom. He’s just Daddy.”

“You’re right.” (laughs) “No, the doctor said his scans don’t show anything new, and he got a great report from his cardiologist last week too.”

“Well that’s great news… but how are you doing, Mom?”

“It is what it is, baby girl. We’re making it work. We always have. Oh, by the way—”

(kids screaming in the background)

“For the love of—hang on one second, Mom. I’m sorry.”

(muffled) “Stop. For like two minutes, can you two just knock it off and let me talk to Grammie for a second? Jeez.”

(muffled banging)

“I’m sorry, Mom. One sec.”

(background) “Hey babe? Chris? Hey, Chris! God—Christopher! Pause that game and take care of the girls for like five minutes, would you?”

“I’m so sorry. This place is a freaking circus.”

(laughs)

“You know what, Ames? I’m pretty tired, and it sounds like you should go see what that was. We’ll talk tomorrow, okay? I love you.”

“Love you more.”

“Not even possible, baby. G’night.”

“Night, Momma. Tell Daddy I love and miss him.”

Hi, the Daddy. Mom called super early and left me a weird message and now she’s not answering. Is everything okay?

Hi, the Sissy. I was fishing with Uncle Aaron. I’m headed home now. I’ll tell her to call you.

“Dad. What’s going on? Is everything okay?”

“Well, I don’t know, Sissy. Your mom fell down and I’m having a hard time trying to help her up.”

“Wait—she fell again? We really need to figure out why this keeps happening. When did she fall? And where? Not down the stairs or anything, right?”

“Oh no. She’s in our room, next to the bed. She said she fell last night after I left with Uncle Aaron.”

“Dad… what time did you leave?”

“Well, he got here about seven, but we were in the basement looking over my eBay stuff for a while. I don’t think we left until about eight.”

“Dad. She’s been on the floor this whole time?”

“I tried, baby, but she won’t let me call anybody. She’s embarrassed. She doesn’t want anyone to see her this way…”

“Dad. Put me on speaker. Right now.”

“…Okay. You’re on.”

“Mom. Listen to me. Are you listening?”

(muffled) “Amy, honey, I’m fine…”

“No. You’re not. Dad is going to hurt himself trying to pick you up. The EMTs are trained for this. They see this every day. I know you’re embarrassed, Mommy, I do. But there is nothing to be ashamed of. Let Dad call for help, or I will call 911 from here.”

(muffled) “David, please… I just can’t…”

(muffled) “Is that Sissy…? Is she coming?”

“Dad. Hang up and call. Right now. She can be mad later, when she’s safe.”

“…Okay. Love you, Sissy.”

“Let me know what’s going on.”

“Okay.”
