Mischievous Medicine (“edited’)

         Mischievous medicine

I was a young man, who never grew up, and I was experimenting all of the time,

but I never did anything illegal, and I never committed any kind of crime!

I experimented with music, and I experimented with my art,

but I tried experimenting with magic potions, and that’s where it ‘fell apart’!

There was smoke and bubbles, but I never tried the mixture out,

because I was unsure about its effectiveness, and I held a little doubt!

I don’t know why they call it a secret ingredient, because it’s not very secret to me,

when the ingredients are written down, and I mix it up “you see”!

I also know what it can do, and so, I won’t get a big surprise,

when your skin turns blotchy first, before you experience swelling of the eyes;

It’s a tasteless mixture, and it can go in drinks, or it can go in food,

and the strength is up to you, and is dependent upon your aim and mood!

But, nevertheless, I made a ‘secret ingredient’, that I accidentally rubbed into my

eyes,

and it affected my brain immediately, which came as no surprise,

I thought that this might be possible, when I was making the mixture up,

but, thankfully, my symptoms were mild, because I didn’t drink a cup!

However, it did make me feel odd, and it was effective ‘just the same’,

and I soon became delirious, and then suddenly…”I was in a speeding train”!

I was in Japan, and I was on a ‘bullet train’, to be precise,

and the images became extremely blurry, which wasn’t very nice,

because the train was going very fast, and so it wasn’t stopping soon,

which was pleasing to know, because I had a plane to catch at noon!

I was a ‘secret agent’, which came with risks, and threat’,

“unless you hide yourself away”, they said, “in Far Eastern Tibet”!

I would always be a target, and then, suddenly, I was shot,

but there was a fight with gunfire behind me, and so on this occasion…“I was not”!

I was just ‘in the wrong place’, and ‘at the wrong time’,

and I was just another victim of a pointless crime!

But, one of the men behind me, was wildly firing his gun,

and he was shooting without aim, like he was having lots of fun!

They soon disarmed each other, but the violence didn’t stop there,

and then they exchanged punches, and blood and teeth were flying in the air!

One man had the upper hand, when he hit ‘the other’, under the chin,

and then the other man fell to the floor, and I thought- ‘he’s finally ‘done in’!

But, ‘that man’ wearily arose, and then he produced a big knife,

and he was waving it around, and was threatening the other man’s life!

Blood was splattering around, and some of it went on my new suit,

which really annoyed me, and I angrily joined-in this pursuit,

“Pack it in”, I shouted with hope, like they were school boys at my school,

and one of them just looked and laughed, like I was, ‘some kind’ of silly fool!

He showed his gun suggestively, ‘as if to say’, “I hold the upper hand…

so stop interfering in matters that you do not understand”!

I stepped back annoyed, and I reluctantly returned to my seat,

and suddenly the Guard rushed in, with many others, cos’ I heard a lot of

 running feet,

and the two men fighting stopped abruptly, and then they quickly ran away,

and there was only one direction that they could go, which was down the

carriageway!

They turned and ran, whilst the train was slowing down,

until it stopped suddenly, which made me want to frown…….

because this train was previously ‘on time’, and it was getting me to the port,

where I would be joining a ship, that would be cruising in a hot resort!

But, I could miss this ship now, and all because of these men,

and I saw them jump off, and I almost started running after them,

but as I stood up, other passengers were staring at me,

and they were looking at my torso, and my suit jacket notably!

Because it was drenched in blood, and a lady came ‘with a phone in hand’,

and she was talking in a language, that I didn’t understand;

I listened for a little while, before my eyes began to close,

and I don’t know how long I slept, but I hoped it was just a little doze?

It was 3 months later, when I awoke, and the language now seemed natural to me,

because I was back in England, and no longer in a foreign territory!

There were English Doctors now, and the nurses spoke the same,

and they understood my language, and they even knew my name!

They told me about my ordeal, and how I was lucky to survive,

 because I had lost a lot of blood, and so I’m very glad to be alive;

I had to fly home quickly, because my operation couldn’t wait,

and the quickest flight available, was actually in ‘air freight’!

My operation was successful, and my blood level was back ‘on track’,

and I now have a hole in my shoulder, that won’t be growing back!

The Doctors also said that my blood had ‘something strange within’,

and he also said, that I now have developed-‘red and blotchy skin’,

“it’ll be okay” he said “I’m sure ‘one day’ we’ll find a cure,

“but at this moment”……he continued…”your blood’s not very pure”!

So, I remained in my bed, whilst the tests were going on,

and then I thought, ‘what could I have possibly done wrong’?

My veins were turning green, and my eyes were going white,

and then I started convulsing, and the nurse shouted “he’s not

   alright”,

And I can’t remember what occurred, or how I became ill,

but I understand that it can’t be cured, with any common pill!

The doctor said that it will affect your memory…. “So exercise your

   brain each day….

but please leave the building now, whilst you can still remember the way”,

“because you’re not staying here, and we don’t want you loitering around,

‘in fact’ stay away from here, and don’t pollute the area and ground”,

‘I guess’, that there’s a moral to this story, but I can’t think what that

    could be,

“possibly don’t mix your drinks, because you’ll lose your memory”!

This is extremely creative - and that it is non-fiction makes it even better! I am envious of writers who can tell a real story through poetry. And yours is all internal dialogue, and so spot on! It's brilliantly done!

Thank you so much for your kind words, and it’s comments like yours, that inspire me to continue with my writing, which, because of a brain haemorrhage in 1993, had to be learn’t again, and your comment makes those efforts so worthwhile, thank you and take care.
