Chapter 3: Ellion
“What?” I breathed, confused. “I think they said—” Jean started, but I cut in. “I know.” I waved him off. “What do you mean you can’t sort me?” Everything felt too much, kids talking around us, the wind blowing in my face, feet hitting the gravel as kids ran by us, the sound of people training, dragging their bags. West’s words kept echoing in my mind. We can’t sort you.
“I’m sorry.” West said, giving me a I-Know-How-Much-This-Stinks smile. “You're wrong.” I told him, voice tight. “Y-you have to be. Everyone gets sorted.” “It’s Okay.” Jean said, then turned to the girl, “Where is he gonna go?” Home. I wanted to say. I couldn’t stay at camp if I couldn’t go to a cabin. I had to go home. I knew I would.
“Well…” The girl answered, “It seems that your cabin has an empty bed. And he does show hints that he might be good there. Though it’s not enough to be sure. Still, we’ll put him there until we figure this out.” She explained.
Jean turned to me, smiling. “Dude? We’re together!” He beamed, “C’mon, I’ll show you the ember Cabin.” He said, grabbing his bag from the ground where he set it. “This is only temporary. We’ll figure this out soon. But I’m sure Jean will help you settle in until then.” Jean grinned at the words, “Duh, C’mon. Let’s go. Thanks.” He waved at the staff as I picked up my bag and we walked off.
“This!” Jean said, as we walked up to a cabin with some burnt wood. “Is Ember Cabin.” I nodded, “I’m guessing the burnt wood wasn’t a choice?” I asked, causing Jean to snort. “Oh no. But it makes us look cool, no?” I had to laugh at that. “It makes you look reckless.” Jean grinned at that. “Same difference.” I rolled my eyes as Jean pushed open the door. “Yo!” Jean shouted to the people inside the cabin.
Three people looked up and saw us. “Jean, Hey.” A guy said, “Hey.” Jean said, “Guys, this is Eliton, He’s a Hybrid. Our new bunkmate.” The three guys, sitting on their beds, waved. “Elion. This is Flint.” Jean said, nodding to a guy with brown hair, and green eyes. He was tall, with ash on his pale hands. “He’s a Fire Fae. Wings only appear when using his gifts.” Jean added.
“I’m Kay.” A shorter guy with hard, red lines around the back of his neck, tanned skin, and ears that looked like they were melted at the edges. He had short blonde hair and dark brown eyes. “Lava Vain?” I guessed, Kay nodded, “Thank you! No one ever knows.” I laughed, “My uncle’s one. If I didn’t know him, I would have been clueless too.” Flint looked over, “He’s a Hybrid. Mom’s a Mortal.” Kay shrugged., “And I guess that means no one would guess I’m a fire vein because of that.” I smiled, “Well, I’m a Hybrid and looks like a Mortal. Got more of my dad.” I told him.
“Hello?” A guy with black hair and red tips and freckles along his arms that looked more like ash marks. Jean sighed, and said, “That is Rave.” I smiled, “Hi.” He nodded slowly, but didn’t say anything. “He’s a mortal. But he got into a fire a few years back. No one really knows why, but he came out with fire gifts.” Jean then leaned in to whisper, “He’s also really cold. Not someone I’d be friends with.” I was about to say something to that when I heard someone clear they’re throat.
“Hello.” A girl about my age with light red hair and soft blue eyes smiled, hands clasped together. “The bell rang.” She informed us, “I was told to tell you it’s training time.” I nodded as Jean said, “Hey! Are you new?” She looked over at him, “uh, yeah. Why?” Jean beamed, clearly glad he was right. “I know most people here. And I do not know you.” The girl laughed, softening a little. “I’m Lyra.” Jean nodded and walked over to her, and I followed. “Jean. This is Ellion.” He gestured to me. “Training.” Kay said in a sing-song voice, clearly happy as we all walked out of the cabin.
“You wanna train with us?” Jean asked, causing Lyra to look a little caught off guard. “Oh! Uh, Sure. Why not? I don’t exactly know what I’m doing.” I smiled, “Me either. I was hoping to just copy Jean and hope for the best.” Lyra laughed at that, “I was just going to do the hope part.” Jean snorted at that, and I smiled. And we kept on walking, a little behind the other guys. Talking as we did so. And as we did I thought, My first training awaits.
Chapter 4: Lyra
I don’t know what came over me. Training with two strangers I met merely an hour ago. Yet, I had no regrets as I held a blade in front of my Target. “Show us what you got!” Jean yelled from behind me, next to Ellion. I sighed, looking over at them. “I told you.” I laughed, “I’m a Mortal. I don’t have a gift. So what I got isn’t much.” Ellion crossed his arms, “I’m giftless too.” He pointed out, I scoffed at that. “For now. Soon you’ll earn your gift and I’ll be an outsider.”
Jean gasped, like I offended his bloodline or something. “You’ll never be an outsider. You're one of us now Lyra.” I blinked at that, “I am?” I asked at the same time Ellion asked, “There’s an us?” Jean groaned, like we were being the confusing ones. “Yes! Us! From now to forever. Any problems?” I grinned, “No objections here!” Ellion nodded, “Agreed.”
“Now!” Jean said, “Throw the blade. Quit. Stalling.” I rolled my eyes and turned to my target. I swung my left arm a couple times to get momentum, and—BAM! It hit the target, it was not good. Barley landed there. But it landed, and I couldn’t help but grinning. “That’s better than nothing, no?” I breathed, turning to face the boys. Who were somehow grinning wider than I was.
“Much better than I could do it.” Ellion agreed. I laughed softly. “Your turn.” I told Jean. Who smirked and said, “Nope. One more. We did like a million.” I rolled my eyes and went to retrieve my blade. “Mortals.” I heard a guy mumble, as he walked over to get a few arrows from the weapon bins. “What was that Rave?” Jean asked, causing Rave to sigh. “Life would be so much easier if we could just train and leave the giftless out of it.” Then he turned to me with the fakest smile ever and said, “No offense.” I sighed, feeling my blood boil. “She may not be offended but I am.” Ellion said, stepping closer, with Jean following close behind.
“Why?” Rave scoffed, “Why? Because you're being rude to my friend. And also being absurd!” He explained. “Yeah,” Jean added, “We need Mortals along with Hybrids and Mythics to protect everyone. It’s how the world works.” Ellion nodded, “Not to mention the fact that Lyra’s going to get her first skill mastered sooner than most—if not all—of the Mortals our age.” I felt a grateful blush warm my face. “Say sorry.” Ellion added. I looked at Ellion, “It’s fine.” I assured him softly. “No, it’s not.” He said, not looking at me. “Say sorry.” He repeated to Rave. Who sighed and muttered a sorry before walking away.
“You good?” Jean asked. I nodded, “Fine. Just a guy being rude. Not the end of the world.” But deep down, I still felt a familiar burn in my core. Wondering if Rave was right. If I was nothing more than being giftless. If that was all that was going to help. And if it was…. Where did that leave me? My mothers words echoed in my brain. Mortal does not mean weak. But how would she know? She wasn’t one. And it wasn’t like being adopted into a Mythic family at such a young age was going to make me think being a mortal was something to be proud of.
“Uh? Call me crazy but you do look all that great.” Jean noted. “Huh?” I asked looking over at him, “Oh, uh, It’s good. Just… Rave sorta got to me. But I got it.” Ellian sighed, “I can’t believe we’re in the same cabin as that guy.” “Tell me about it.” Jean groaned. “And you’ve known him for less than a day.” I laugh, “I’m just glad I don’t have to live with him.” Ellion tilted his head at
that and asked, “What cabin are you in anyways?” I smiled, “Dawn Cabin.” Ellison smiled at that, “My dad was in that one. He loved it.” Just then the bell rang and a Counselor yelled, “Dinner!”
