Harmony Mental Health Clinic was originally a large suburban house built when the local population was small, land was plentiful, and properties were affordable. It was designed as a five-bedroom home, with a spacious front yard featuring two tall, majestic palm trees that were nearly as old as the house itself. Inside, the rooms were notably spacious, with high ceilings that created a bright, airy feel. When the building was converted into a clinic, its rooms were divided into two or three smaller offices to accommodate the number of clients visiting psychologists, providing more private, dedicated consultation areas.
Siobhan Kelly was a dedicated psychologist who worked at the Harmony Clinic for over ten years. During this time, she built a strong reputation for her extensive knowledge, years of experience, and genuine concern for her clients. She often went beyond standard procedures to offer personalized support, creating a welcoming environment that helped many of her clients manage their mental health challenges. However, throughout her career, she encountered several clients with difficult personalities. These individuals often had complex emotional or behavioral issues that required her to invest extra time, patience, and mental energy. Working with such clients was demanding and often left her feeling physically and emotionally drained. A recent example was her client Fatima, whose extreme negativity toward people and life pushed her to the limits of her professional endurance.
That day, Siobhan had a busy but uneventful morning filled with routine tasks and client appointments. Despite the lack of major events, she felt a constant underlying tension, knowing she was about to meet her most difficult client yet. Fatima, originally from Afghanistan, was a woman in her fifties who had lived in Australia for many years and spoke English well. However, her negative attitude and constant criticism made every session draining. Fatima was known for her pessimism and was the most negative person Siobhan had ever met. In their previous sessions, she was consistently marked by her constant nagging. For example, she would start complaining about her husband, then shift to criticizing her son, followed by her daughter-in-law, and so on. She constantly searched for someone or something to criticize, showing a pattern of dissatisfaction and fault-finding. Today, Siobhan felt especially impatient about seeing Fatima and her persistent negativity. So far, Fatima has refused to complete the assignments and exercises Siobhan prepared for her, not even trying them, claiming they are pointless and won't help. Fatima's stubbornness in not listening to her suggestions pushed her expertise to its limit, and she did not know how to help her. At times, Siobhan felt like punching her and kicking her out of the office, yelling at her for wasting her time. If it weren’t for her professionalism, she probably would have done it by their third or fourth session. Overall, Fatima's persistent negative and demanding attitude was pushing Siobhan to her breaking point, making each upcoming session feel like a mental endurance challenge.
Fifteen minutes before her scheduled session with Fatima, Siobhan quietly slipped into the office kitchen, craving a brief moment of peace before facing the storm. The small, somewhat cluttered space was a humble refuge. Due to the stressful nature of their jobs, they kept a pot of strong black coffee on a hot plate in the corner, always warm and ready for anyone who needed a quick break and a caffeine boost. She opened a cabinet full of mismatched mugs and a stack of plastic containers, reached for a larger-than-usual mug, appreciated its comforting weight, and poured a generous splash of the dark, steaming liquid. As she took a moment to scan the room, her eyes settled on the fridge, whose white exterior was decorated with a few colorful magnets holding faded photos of her colleagues on sunny beaches around the world, a reminder of their occasional escapes from their stressful jobs. She opened the fridge door and hesitated briefly before grabbing a large slice of cheesecake that had been there since the morning. Its creamy surface was topped with a glossy glaze and a dollop of whipped cream. Normally, she would avoid such indulgences, but today she felt she deserved a little extra joy—a sweet, rich slice to lift her spirits. As she took a forkful and bit into it, she realized she was engaging in emotional eating, a habit she often advised her clients to avoid. Yet at that moment, the comfort of the rich, sugary treat felt like a temporary shield against the stress and anticipation of her upcoming session with Fatima, listening to her complaints and negative reviews of the world.
After she finished her treat and took the last sip of her coffee, she gently peeked through the small gap in the door and saw that Fatima had already arrived and was sitting in the waiting area. Siobhan carefully gathered the mug and dish she had used, rinsed them thoroughly with dish soap under warm water, and gently placed them on the dish rack to dry. Walking out of the kitchen with hesitant, slow steps, her shoulders hunched like a prisoner on death row, she headed toward the waiting room. There, she met Fatima and politely but tiredly signaled for her to follow into the consultation room. Without waiting for an invitation, Fatima launched into a long monologue, bragging openly about her mother-in-law. She described her as cruel and manipulative, outlining her evil schemes—such as spreading false rumors and stirring conflicts—and how she caused trouble in their family, tearing apart relationships and sowing discord, while Siobhan listened passively. Fed up with constant bragging, Siobhan used a strategy she often teaches her anxious clients. She began imagining herself in a calm, peaceful place—a serene sanctuary. As she remembered her friends' travel photos on the fridge, she visualized herself on a sunny tropical beach, with crystal-clear turquoise waters shining in bright sunlight, tall palm trees swaying gently in the warm breeze, and soft golden sands stretching beneath her feet. Soon, she was lost in her imaginary world, nearly feeling the sun’s warmth and the gentle touch of the sea breeze on her skin as she stood there, briefly escaping the chaos and negativity caused by Fatima. Gradually, Fatima's sharp, piercing voice softened, fading into her imagined sounds of water lapping against the shore and wind rustling through leaves. It was a deeply refreshing feeling she had never experienced before—as if she had entered a trance-like state of self-hypnosis, enabling her to find a moment of peace and calm amid the turmoil.
Fatima's monologue lasted about 40 minutes, during which she kept bragging about her family and pointing out their flaws and shortcomings with a mix of anger and frustration. She described various incidents and family dynamics, her voice growing angrier and more intense. After her rant, she suddenly fell silent, creating a tense stillness in the room. The silence snapped Siobhan out of her daydream, pulling her back from her imagined paradise into the tense reality of her room. Since she hadn't really been listening to Fatima, Siobhan hesitated, unsure of what to say next; her mind racing to find the right words. Before she could speak, Fatima unexpectedly continued, launching into a new, fiery rant full of accusations and emotional appeals. She emphasized her mother-in-law's strong influence over her husband, describing how she believed her husband had been subtly drawn away from her by his mother's manipulations and interference. The air in the room grew even heavier with unspoken tension as Fatima pressed her points forcefully. Unable to return to her daydream, Siobhan listened in silence, deep in thought, pondering her next move.
While half-listening to Fatima's monologue, Siobhan suddenly had an epiphany about their interactions and why Fatima was seeing her. For the first time since she had seen Fatima, she understood an important point about her client that she had previously overlooked. Fatima was a narcissist who saw herself as superior to others, and she wasn't in her room seeking help to change her flawed personality. Fatima's constant negativity and nagging attitude made it harder to build genuine friendships. She just wanted to speak freely and share her thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or interruption. She had no friends or family to turn to, so she paid Siobhan solely to be a kind listener and confidante.

I found this very interesting. The words "Brag" and "Bragging" kept throwing me off, though. I was trying to figure out why Fatima would "brag" about what a jerk other people were. I think the use of the word "nag" or "nagging" like you used in the first instance was better. I so love that we get to see the emotions that Siobhan is experiencing because it makes you connect with her and sort of put your own block up against Fatima. So, I also love that we don't really get exposed to Fatima's feelings because it makes the story so much richer in the end when Siobhan has her epiphany. Great story!

I didn't dare to try this prompt. So, chapeau for this story!
I feel with Siobhan. This kind of job and this kind of client must be frustrating. And it's so easy to be on her side. The scene of not following your own rules is so relatable. Now, I also want to eat a sweet treat.
There was just one small moment that pulled me out of the flow a bit: the issue with Fatima is introduced twice. I think the story would be even stronger if the first mention stayed a little more vague, and the full details only appeared the second time — that way the reveal stays fresh and avoids repetition.

This does an excellent job of showing their inner worlds and relationship to each other without using a single word of dialogue. I really enjoyed it and would love to see where the story would go if it were longer.
