Sarah Fountain

Sarah Fountain – Designer

Specialist children's book illustrator and designer, creating beautiful and engaging books and content.

Overview

Hi there!

I have been professionally designing and illustrating for children since 2007, after completing a BA (hons) in Illustration in 2006 from Camberwell College of Arts. I have worked mainly in design for this time, including as an in-house children’s designer at companies including Pearson Education, John Brown Media and Redan Publishing. Now I do children’s design work for many companies, including leading publishers such as Dorling Kindersley and Arcturus.

For the last few years I have been doing more and more illustration work, and honestly, I love it. I always wanted to be like Beatrix Potter, and now, very often I feel that I am.

I run a small creative design agency on the North Shropshire, Wales border with my husband, Noel. We have two children and two cats, a lovely old house and a dog called Shadow.

We will work closely together, to ensure all the details of your project are delivered in the way you want, as well as being of the up-most trade standard. We will have video calls, regular check-ins and a schedule that everyone understands.

My knowledge of the children's publishing industry and its processes is vast, and I will help you navigate your journey from manuscript to finished, beautiful book!

Work experience

Self-employed

Jun, 2016 — Present
Working across different projects, including primary educational content for Dorling Kindersley, and many activity books and fact books for Arcturus Publishing. I have self-published my own picture book, and help many authors publish their picture books and chapter books. I genuinely love my work. Children’s books have been my passion since I was a child, and I love helping others realise their publishing dreams.

Self-employed

Fountain Creative is a small creative agency I own with my husband. Together we work on projects big and small. My specialism is children's publishing - working on all kinds of books for children from picture books to fact books, to educational reading books, to complicated puzzle books! I can help you take your manuscript to a finished book that you can be proud of, that will look good enough to sit on any child's book shelf.

Pearson Education

Aug, 2013 — May, 2016 (over 2 years)
Project managed and design-led two major Primary education products for Pearson UK: Bug Club and Abacus. Both these projects included designing books, art-directing illustrators and designers, whilst also creating digital content and overseeing budgets and schedules.

Sarah was the ideal creative to collaborate with on my first children's book. She is a great listener, and her technical knowledge more than made for my shortcomings. Also, she communicated clearly every step of the way. The outcome of it all was just so lovely. I definitely look forward to wo...

Sarah was clearly very experienced and was able to roll with any request we gave her. She was systematic in what she would offer us, always giving us multiple options and an ability to mix and match until we were satisfied. We had some requests to touch up some of the artwork and she made that ...

What value does your experience add to an author's book?

I have a background in educational design for children. I also used to design kids magazines, and now I design and illustrate all types of children's books. When designing educational content I learnt the importance of making the content as accessible as possible, so now I always question whether...

How do you work to translate a character’s personality into visual design?

I think so much of a character's personality is in their eyes, and how they move. If they're a busy dog, then they are always going to be moving or sniffing, or bouncing! If they are a worried character, then they might not take up the whole page, because they probably want to make themselves sma...

What professional organizations do you encourage illustrators to join, if any?

Definitely the AOI, the Association of Illustrators. Since joining the AOI I have felt more confident in calling myself an illustrator, because of the many opportunities they provide to connect with other illustrators. They can provide help with contracts, portfolio reviews, and there are monthly...
