Overview
I have been designing books for over thirty years, (with twelve of those in-house at Penguin Australia). I’ve been freelance since 2006 and work for many large and small publishers world-wide, as well as directly with authors and self-publishers. I design across several genres but mostly focus on literary and commercial fiction and non-fiction.
Books are my life! I have been a regular guest-speaker and panelist at literary festivals, a judge for national illustration and book design awards and a founding committee member of Australian Book Designers’ Association. In 2011, I was humbled to be inducted into the Australian Publishing Association Hall of Fame.
I love reading and words! It’s my great privilege to read 100% of my fiction manuscripts. I offer advice on briefing, schedules, materials and process and I pride myself on my communication skills, professionalism and reliability.
Testimonials from self-publishers
"I’d heard of Sandy Cull, book cover designer extraordinaire, from prolific writer Carmel Bird. Being a self-publisher, I was hesitant in contacting such a huge name in the industry. I worried needlessly. Sandy was charming and warm and gave me a date immediately. We worked together on the cover for 'From the Top' and, from the first examples Sandy sent me, I knew I was in good hands. Nothing, no changes, no tiny adjustments, were ever too much bother for her. Her ideas completely came out of left field and blew me away. The final draft was exquisite; I loved it instantly. Thank you, Sandy, what a pleasurable experience."
T. L. W. Robb, author of 'From the Top', 2023.
"I’ve been privileged to work directly with Sandy on my past three novels, and can attest that it’s been a wholly positive experience.
I have been in awe of her brilliant design skills, both in creating my covers and also in designing internal layout. Beyond that, Sandy has also been integral in assisting me to find skilled typesetters, and in providing me with final files, ready for publishing.
In all these respects, Sandy has been professional and thorough, always willing to accommodate any changes I might suggest, and doing so with patience and good humour. She is completely client-focussed in her approach.
I would absolutely recommend her to any author considering her services."
S G Bryant, author of The Harry Holloway Detective Series, 'Taken In', 'Death in Black and White', and 'Fresh Air and Foul Play'.
