Overview
I'm an experienced copy-editor and proofreader with a ten-year history in the publishing industry. I hold two qualifications in editing, a host of testimonials and a sunny, can-do outlook!
Drawing on my past experience as a Commissioning Editor, I work with authors to elevate their manuscripts in preparation for their submission to agents and publishers. Having been on the other side of acquisitions, I understand the competition and have an insight into what publishers are looking for. I have particular experience with helping self-published authors tighten up their writing to suit the mainstream publishing arena.
I also work with publishers and companies to edit manuscripts and commercial copy in accordance with house style guidelines.
Like you, the main motivation in my career is story-telling. I will work with you to make your writing the best it can be, without losing your voice.
Proofreading
I will check your work for errors.
This includes:
- Correcting grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes
- Following your preferred 'house style' to ensure that capital letters, spellings, numbers and hyphens are used in a consistent way
- Making sure that font sizes, spacing and formatting are consistent
Copy-editing
As well as everything included in a proofread, I will edit your work for textual inconsistencies and contradictions. (Some of the below go beyond what many editors would offer in a copy-edit, but if I see a plot hole waving at me, I can't help but highlight it!)
This applies to:
- Consistency of character portrayal
- Coherence of point of view
- Correcting unintended repetition of words, phrases or particular syntax
- Suitability of sentence length
- Correcting anachronisms
- Highlighting info-dumping
- Flagging plot holes
