Nadja Tiktinsky

Nadja Tiktinsky – Editor

Children's literature expert with 7 years of editorial experience, an MFA in Writing for Children, and a middle-school teacher's perspective

Overview

Since opening my editorial business in 2018, I’ve worked with authors at every stage of the writing process, from outlining to querying. I hold an MFA in Writing for Children from The New School and a BA in English with a specialization in Creative Writing from Southern Methodist University. In addition to my editorial work, I teach middle-school English and have worked as a children’s bookseller. I am extremely knowledgeable about the contemporary children’s literature market and read 160+ books a year to stay up to date.

I approach every manuscript I edit with respect, care, enthusiasm, and a collaborative mindset. I’m here to help guide your book into the best possible version of itself, preserving your vision and playing to your strengths as a writer while turning a critical eye to elevating craft and plot. As an editor, I understand that you are the expert on your work, and that my role is to give suggestions, not mandate changes. My expertise in children's literature enables me to provide nuanced, market-relevant feedback to help your book find its place in the contemporary canon. When working with me, you can expect clear communication, connections to comp titles, and thoughtful, idea-generating conversation.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2018 — Present
I opened my editorial business in 2018 and have worked with a variety of children's authors, across all age categories. Picture books, middle grade, and young adult are all well within my wheelhouse. Authors who have worked with me have gone on to publish traditionally, self-publish, and win awards. Recently, an editorial client of mine, Shanna Upchurch, won SCBWI's 2024 Work-in-Progress Award for her middle grade manuscript, "A Garden Lost."

Friends School of Portland (Previous: Okemo Mountain School; George Jackson Academy)

Sep, 2019 — Present
In my teaching positions, I have worked with students in grades 5-12 teaching a variety of subjects, but most frequently have focused on English. In my current teaching role, I also curate and manage the middle school library. Working directly with children makes me especially attuned to how kids chose and connect to books.

Northshire Bookstore (Previous: Books of Wonder)

Sep, 2018 — Jan, 2022 (over 3 years)
As a bookseller, I worked directly with kids to help them connect with their next great read. I advised the store's buying team and worked with local educators to build school libraries and help guide literature curriculum. Through the bookstores I worked at, I became an active member of the New England Independent Booksellers Association and joined their Windows and Mirrors Committee, through which I read over 200 frontlist children's titles a year, curated selections of important diverse books, and advised bookstores across New England on how to promote and sell those books.
