Work experience

Self-employed

Mar, 2025 — Present
I am a freelance commissioning editor, copyeditor, proofreader, and translator with over 12 years of experience in the publishing industry. For a decade, I worked as an in-house editor at Bloomsbury Publishing, commissioning academic books and content for a digital resource. After my second maternity leave, I decided to embrace freelancing and now collaborate directly with authors, publishers, businesses, and charities. I’m proud to be a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).

Bloomsbury Publishing

Apr, 2015 — Apr, 2025 (about 10 years)
I am a commissioning editor on the Education and Research Methods list. I assess proposals and develop projects with academics, as well as identifying gaps in the market and then finding the most suitable author(s). I oversee projects from proposal all the way to, and beyond, publication.

Maria was fabulous to work with. She had really helpful feedback and put together a strong query for me based on a rough draft I sent her. She also was incredibly responsive. She had the work done within 24 hours of my acceptance of her offer completing it on a holiday, no less! I feel really go...

I found her comments and suggestions deeply insightful and encouraging. She is an ace at formatting and t...

Maria adds the professional touch non-fiction writing needs. She finished my project early and was eager to answer any and all questions I had--giving great advice. The proofread manuscript came with a professional style sheet and detailed editorial notes. Hope to work with her again in the future!
