Overview
Peter has worked as a journalist and editor in Fleet Street (UK) and was one of the youngest news editors for BBC Radio News. He has been in New York publishing as an editor (in-house and freelance), literary agent, and published writer for nearly forty years. He began in publishing in the US as a book reviewer (Publishers Weeky), and freelance editor (Doubleday, NAL, Kensington, etc) before becoming the adult fiction editor for six years at a midsize New York publisher. He became a literary agent in 1991, merging his agency with another in 2007 to become CEO and senior agent. Several of his authors have been bestselling writers. He was also an adjunct professor in the New York University further education publishing faculty for 10 years, where he taught a class on how to become a literary agent. For several years he also ran the book part of NYU's Summer Publishing Institute.
Before becoming involved in publishing, Peter was the editor-in-chief of a Manhattan local newspaper. He has lectured and written widely and often on publishing and the craft of writing. He is the author of published novels and a dozen nonfiction books, and is known for working closely, editorially, with his agency clients.
These days, Peter divides his time between his agency work, writing, coaching, and editing non-agency writers who feel Indie publishing is the better route for their books.
In his spare time he is also a professional jazz musician.
