Kristen Holt-Browning

Kristen Holt-Browning – Editor

developmental & copy editor of fiction & poetry | 20+ years experience published novelist & poet | book production & publishing expertise

Overview

I worked in editorial positions at W. W. Norton, McGraw-Hill, and Routledge for a decade before I transitioned to freelance work. For the last 15 years, I have offered developmental editing and copy editing services to writers on various paths to publication, including:

-self-publishing novelists;

-academics publishing with university presses;

-poets seeking to refine their overarching themes and line-by-line word choices;

-novelists looking for help with manuscript development before they query literary agents.

I'm also a writer myself; I've published a poetry chapbook and a novel, and my first full-length poetry collection is forthcoming (all three published with small/independent publishers). My experience as an author makes me a sensitive & sympathetic editor. I am here to support, not supplant, you, your vision, and your voice, whatever your publishing goals might be.

I am especially comfortable with hybrid, experimental, and in-between works. If your work doesn't fit into a neat category or genre, I would love to work with you to hone your singular project.

"When I chose to self-publish my debut novel, a copyeditor was a must. Kristen's skills as a copyeditor provided the final polish for my grammar and punctuation errors. The suggestions she had for enhancing sentence structure made it clear that she fully grasped the goal of my novel. She has a precise way of stepping inside your story and without changing your tone or personal style, helps you make it the best it can be. Kristen is an excellent resource to have as part of your team." —Remi Zorne, author of SCRAPERS

"Kristen is more than an editor, though she is certainly that. You can rely on her keen eye and her ear for language, her commitment to the mot juste. An accomplished writer herself, she knows how to be a trustworthy companion to poets and storytellers, entering imaginatively into the work, respecting and supporting its integrity. Kristen’s skill and whole-hearted engagement with my novel, gave me the confidence to become my own publisher for the first time. I highly recommend her editorial work to independent writers and to those with traditional publishers." —Elizabeth Cunningham, author of OVER THE EDGE OF THE WORLD and The Maeve Chronicles

"Kristen is everything a writer needs in an editor—and more. She has an impeccable feel for language, a careful attention to detail, and the patience, grace, and kindness that makes working with her a pleasure." —Ruth Danon, poet, author of Turn Up the Heat and Word Has It

Kristen is an exceptional copy editor and a pleasure to work with. She approached my historical novel with great care, professionalism, and respect for my voice. Her edits strengthened the manuscript without ever making it feel like it had been rewritten by someone else. What impressed me most w...

I was very impressed with the work Kristen did for me! Overall, my experience was great, as she delivered her edits quickly and efficiently while providing in-depth comments and suggestions. Since poetry is so subjective, I wanted an editor who would offer insight and edits without erasing my spe...

Kristen's comments on my poetry manuscript were thoughtful and detailed. She also responded to my request to see if in her view the poems needed to be re-ordered and was frank about her misgivings on two sections, where they should go. After I got my edits from her, I asked if she would refresh ...

What is the single most important piece of advice for first-time novelists?

Write the story you want to write, need to write--and want to read. Don't think about or worry about market trends, or how you will position your book on the market, or writing a book that will blow up on BookTok. A novel is a marathon, and in order to see it all the way through, you have to love...
