Margaret Manos

Margaret Manos – Editor

Developmental editor and writer on college art, history, humanities texts. Excellent line editor, proofreader, and copy editor, too.

Overview

For 25 years, I’ve helped more than 90 first-time authors shape their texts, rewrite and reorganize material, generate ideas for image and feature programs, and get their first editions out into the world. I’ve had extensive experience writing original text for expanded editions and condensing text for brief editions. Recently, I’ve been writing and editing e-books in world history and world art.

I have long experience as a freelance newspaper writer for local papers in New York City and Lancaster, New Hampshire.

MOST recently, I've begun to help people write their memoirs and end-of-life letters. The work is highly satisfying. It's the same kind of thing I've done with college publishers, only personal: I help with clarity and consistency, develop ideas and themes, suggest feature programs (timelines and family trees!), and the like. I love it.

And I'm smart, friendly, calm, capable, and extremely pleasant to work with!

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 1991 — Present

As a freelance developmental editor in the higher education market, I work closely with authors and in-house departments (editorial, design, production, photo research, marketing, media), guiding projects from concept to final product: published textbook, online content, and ancillary materials. I review and assess projects for pedagogical value and organizational structure; gather and analyze reviewer feedback; and evaluate competing products.

Margaret exceeded my expectations in all respects. Every one of her edits improved my manuscript from typos to sentence structure to sequence of events. Her eye for detail was remarkable. She finished the work well within schedule and at a very reasonable price. Moreover, she was a pleasure to work with. I won't hesitate to use her again. Many thanks, Margaret!

Margaret gave exactly the guidance I had in mind, attendant to detail like punctuation when that was at issue and the occasional rewrite when indicated. She was attendant to my expectations. I cannot think of a time when her and my judgment differed, but she made clear she was there to help, not overrule. I have a new project on the way and have already asked if she will sign on again.

I LOVED working with Margaret. From what I had already seen in my behind the scenes encounters with celebrated authors' manuscripts, I understood the importance of working with a great editor. But as a writer primarily working in scholarly contexts, I've always been expected to edit everything I write myself -- maybe in the light of general criticism of my prose from academic mentors, but neve...

This is my second project working with Ms. Manos. I have the strongest recommendation for her work. She is observant and meticulous. She has suggested rewrites on occasion, but in all cases her observations were helpful and to the point.
