Overview

For 25 years, I’ve helped more than 90 first-time authors shape their texts, rewrite and reorganize material, generate ideas for image and feature programs, and get their first editions out into the world. I’ve had extensive experience writing original text for expanded editions and condensing text for brief editions. Recently, I’ve been writing and editing e-books in world history and world art.

I have long experience as a freelance newspaper writer for local papers in New York City and Lancaster, New Hampshire.

MOST recently, I've begun to help people write their memoirs. The work is highly satisfying. It's the same kind of thing I've done with college publishers, only personal: I help with clarity and consistency, develop ideas and themes, suggest feature programs (timelines and family trees!), and the like. I love it.

And I'm smart, friendly, calm, capable, and extremely pleasant to work with!

Self-employed
January, 1991 – Present (almost 30 years)

As a freelance developmental editor in the higher education market, I work closely with authors and in-house departments (editorial, design, production, photo research, marketing, media), guiding projects from concept to final product: published textbook, online content, and ancillary materials. I review and assess projects for pedagogical value and organizational structure; gather and analyze reviewer feedback; and evaluate competing products.

Margaret was awesome to work with. This was my first book. She went the extra mile to help me through the process. Before sending my book to her to edit for message, flow, visual appearance, and structure I ran all the checks in word and purchased Grammarly. I was amazed at the number of errors that Margaret found in my document. These were real errors that would hurt my credibility as a w...

I loved working with Margaret! I had never used a copy editor before and am not super tech savvy and she seamlessly walked me thorugh how to make the best use of her services. She was quick, efficient, and checked in with me every step of the way to ensure I was getting exactly what I needed. My final document is polished but still very much reads in my voice, something that I was initially wor...
