Lisa Bintrim – Editor

Copy Editor, Proofreader, & Educational Content Specialist | Early Childhood, Academic, and Nonfiction

Overview

I'm a proofreader, copy editor, and educational content developer with 25+ years of experience in academic publishing, educational media, and children's librarianship. I work primarily with nonfiction, educational, and academic manuscripts — helping authors clarify their arguments, strengthen their structure, and reach the readers they're writing for.

My editorial background spans academic press (Duke University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, Taylor & Francis), practitioner publishing (ASCD's Educational Leadership), and educational content development for audiences ranging from early childhood educators to general readers. I hold a PhD in Anthropology and an MA in Library and Information Studies, which means I bring both research literacy and genuine subject matter depth to the manuscripts I work on.

I specialize in:

* Nonfiction and academic manuscripts across the social sciences, education, and child development

* Educational content for practitioner and general audiences

* Early childhood, literacy, and K–12 education titles

* Manuscripts written by researchers, educators, and subject matter experts who need editorial support translating their expertise into accessible prose

I'm known for thorough, substantive feedback that respects the author's voice while making the work significantly stronger. I'm currently accepting new copyediting projects and proofreading.

Lisa did a thoughtful and careful job with the manuscript. What I appreciated most was that she really seemed to understand what the piece was trying to do, rather than just editing at the sentence level. Her comments helped clarify the argument, catch places where I was assuming too much of the ...

Working with Lisa was an incredible experience. What stood out to me most was how genuinely invested she became in my book. She didn’t approach the project as simply another proofreading job—she truly connected with the story, the message, and what I was trying to communicate to the reader. Beca...

Is it the editor's job to fact-check when editing nonfiction?

It depends--on the type and level of editorial service, and on what you and your editor have agreed to. I think it's fair to expect a copyeditor to have a solid grasp of general knowledge and to flag anything that triggers their Spidey-sense. For example, if the date for a U.S. Civil War battle...

How can a style sheet help in the editing process?

It takes a village to produce a book. Between manuscript and publication, a book is likely to pass through at least a half dozen pairs of hands: production editor, copy editor, designer, typesetter, proofreader, indexer. These days, it's unlikely that all of those people are working under one roo...

What style guides do you primarily work with?

Because I mostly edit educational and academic materials, Chicago Manual of Style is my ride-or-die style guide. I've found that it is both the clearest and the most complete of the style guides, and the latest (18th) edition includes some much-needed, commonsense changes. With CMS, I can usually...
