Laura Boon

Laura Boon – Editor

I’m passionate about helping authors get their books to publication standard. I focus on genre fiction, mainly romance and crime, and memoir

Overview

I am a qualified editor with more than ten years experience. I am happy to work with all authors, from those who want to improve their manuscripts in order to attract the attention of a traditional publisher to those authors who plan to self-publish. I edit commercial fiction and general non-fiction with a particular interest in romance, romance-adjacent novels and crime.

My particular strength is copy editing as I believe it is at a line level where one can best weed out story deficiencies and fine tune language. Attention to detail regarding plot, character and dialogue is important as is a keen eye for the repetitions and writing ‘tics’ all authors exhibit in one form or another. I always commit to my deadlines. I am a friendly, generous individual who loves interacting with other people, especially authors.

I am passionate about books and stories. I have published my own books, both traditionally and independently, and understand how authors feel about their ‘book babies’. As a result, I communicate sensitively and sincerely and build up strong working relationships with the authors I edit. This is reflected in the feedback I receive.

‘Laura’s astute guidance and feedback during my initial edits were absolutely invaluable!’ Rae Cairns, author of The Good Mother (thriller)

‘I could not have put The Bait Trap on the shelf without Laura Boon.’ Lynne Johnson, author of The Bait Trap (crime)

‘I highly recommend Laura for all your editing needs. Her feedback and guidance is given with such support and encouragement that it made the whole daunting experience of editing my first novel a pleasure.’ Katie Montinero, author of The Girl in the Sunflower Dress (romance)

‘I can highly recommend Laura for proofreading and editing services. She is thorough and accurate. She takes the angst out of apostrophes, the confusion out of commas and colons and makes diplomatic suggestions when some of the words dashed off in a fit of creative frenzy don’t quite make sense.’ Dr Terri Green, author of The Swordmaster’s Daughter (historical fiction)

Work experience

Finch Publishing

Sep, 2011 — Aug, 2016 (almost 5 years)

Finch Publishing was a boutique non-fiction Australian publisher. We were a small team and in addition to my marketing and publicity portfolio, I took on editing and proofreading reading duties for books including Green Vanilla Tea, Road No Good, The Erratics, and Sleeping Apart not Falling Apart.

Self-employed

Aug, 2011 — Present

After working in publishing for over 30 years, in a variety of positions, I decided to focus on editing. I have a BA English language and literature and am an accredited editor with the Institute for Professional Editors (IPEd). I provide a range of editorial services to authors including copy edits/ line edits and proofreading.

I can not thank this woman enough for her care in editing my book. She has shared her knowledge willingly and has made me sound as though I know what I was talking about. I will forever be grateful. She always kept in contact with me through out this process and I cannot recommend her more highly.
