Ed Wright

Ed Wright – Editor

Astute, experienced and empathetic, I'm a narrative problem solver and sentence sharpener who works well with big presses and solo authors.

Overview

I'm an experienced editor, manuscript assessor and writing mentor. I work across, fiction, non-fiction and poetry. My fiction specialities are literary fiction and crime fiction. Non-fiction strengths are true crime, sport, history and politics. Books I have edited have been short-listed major Australian awards including the Miles Franklin, Children's Book Council of Australia, and Prime Minister's and Victorian Premier's Literary Awards. Some of the books I have enjoyed working on are Philip Salom's Waiting, Michael Winkler's Grimmish, Eva Collins's Ask No Questions, Penny Flanagan's Surviving Hal, Gary Jubelin's Badness, Steve Cannane's Fair Game, Ross Coulthard's In Plain Sight and Gregor Paul's biography of All Black's rugby coach, Steve Hansen.

As an editor I love wrangling with the puzzles of structure as much as I like making sentences taut and compelling at the level of the line. My style is consultative: I am not shy of offering my opinion but in the end it's your name that's going on the cover of the book.

More than 20 years of reviewing books for publications such as The Australian newspaper, Sydney Morning Herald and South China Morning Post have given me a strong idea of the literary landscape, which is invaluable when it comes to manuscript assessments. My experience as a teacher combined with my editorial prowess, means I'm a good person to have with you as a mentor if you are needing someone to help you with your writing journey.

Ed offered me some good advice and suggestions on how I could bring my story to the point where it might be worthy of being published. And I am grateful for that.

Ed's assessment of my manuscript was excellent. It clarified points that I had already asked myself and went further to give sound advice regarding changes that would improve it and make it more suitable for publication. I will continue to work with Ed in future.
