Overview

As a former editor at two of the top book publishers in New York, I know exactly what it takes to get your manuscript ready for the world, no matter where you are in the writing process. I’ve helped freelance clients land agents, secure deals with publishing houses from big to small (including 6-figure deals!), and publish independently quite successfully, winning awards and hitting bestseller lists. Whatever your goal, my support and advice doesn’t end after your manuscript or other materials are edited. I aim to help make all of your writing dreams come true. But don't just take my word for it…

“Kristen is a fabulous editor. Without her, I would still be floundering with unpublished manuscripts. She is extraordinarily giving, super-smart, knows everything about thriller and crime novels, and for me, has been an editor, guru and writer’s workshop rolled into one. She completely changed my writing life.”

— MARK RUBINSTEIN, AUTHOR OF MAD DOG HOUSE, LOVE GONE MAD AND MAD DOG JUSTICE

“I first hired Kristen to help me with my submission package for querying agents. I started querying with the edited materials, and I got an agent in less than two months. Unfortunately, the first book didn’t sell. On my second book, I really wanted another set of eyes reviewing each fifty pages as I finished them; this served the purpose of developmental editing but also keeping me on track, because I knew there was someone waiting for the next set of pages. Her notes were spot on, and in one instance she changed—for the better—the way that I write. That book went out on submission and sold a week later. Kristen is a game-changer.

— ELIZABETH BRECK, AUTHOR OF ANONYMOUS

While I work directly with authors most often, I also work with several literary agents, either editing novels for their clients or offering a second opinion on manuscripts they’re considering for representation, and as an editor on a contract basis with several publishers. I work on all commercial fiction, with a focus on crime fiction and romance. Now, let's get you published!

Freelance Editor

Self-employed
September, 2009 – Present (about 11 years)

Senior Editor

New American Library, Penguin Random House
September, 2006 – May, 2009 (over 2 years)

I most recently worked as a senior editor for Penguin’s New American Library (NAL), where I helped launch Obsidian, their dedicated mystery imprint. Besides running the day-to-day operations of Obsidian, I edited approximately one hundred original titles across all genres. I was also in charge of NAL’s movie/television tie-in program and edited numerous original novels based on TV programs such as Burn Notice, The Unit, Criminal Minds, and Psych.

Senior Editor

Mysterious Press, Warner Books
August, 2000 – September, 2006 (about 6 years)

I began my career in the subsidiary rights department of what is now Hachette Book Group, but quickly switched to the editorial side, eventually overseeing Grand Central Publishing’s legendary Mysterious Press. There, I worked with many amazing authors, including such luminaries as M. C. Beaton, Lindsey Davis, Margaret Maron, and Marcia Muller.

Kristen was great!! Beyond all my expectations. When I spoke with other writers, the comment I heard most often was, "She's not cheap but she is very good." This made me feel like we were getting an incredible value for our money. Several of our members opted to take advantage of the Chapter offer and sent multiple WIP's to her. And lastly, I think the comment from one of our members says it b...

I worked with an editor on each of my previous two novels, but by far Kristen has been the best. The feedback I received from her has allowed me to improve the story's narrative pace, round out the major characters, and increase its potential commercial viability. When you have someone who has this depth of experience in the industry and understands what both publishers and readers will like, y...

It was a pleasure working with Kristen. She was fast with her work, responded to my emails quickly and helped me find the direction I needed. Her revision notes were extremely detailed on the pages, but she also worked with me on the bigger picture, on finding and shaping the right thread to pull the reader forward. Plus she was very encouraging. Revision is not easy, and I am still struggling...

Kristen did a wonderful job helping me whip my manuscript into shape. She was kind as well as honest. She is not out to tear you down but to build you up and make your work better. Kristen delivered my project before the deadline, and communicated every step of the way. I can't wait to use her services again!
