Overview
With seventeen years of writing and editing work behind me, my expertise includes children's and adult fiction/nonfiction.
I am a graduate of Vermont College's MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults and a traditionally published YA author. I teach Creative Writing Continuing Ed courses at my local university and work as a freelance copyeditor/proofreader for Penguin Random House in adult fiction/nonfiction. As a freelancer I've also edited picture books for Sounds True Publishing, Gibbs Smith Publishing, and Playful Learning Press.
I am a firm believer in the power of story and creativity in our lives—as well as colored pens and notebooks with birds on them. Working with me begins with a discussion of where YOU hope to take your current manuscript before diving into what changes can strengthen the work as a whole.
In a developmental edit, you'll receive margin notes and an editorial letter to guide your next steps. I take care to address the needs of each individual manuscript while extending all "lessons-learned" to "skills for the next project."
Your investment in editing should result in a better book AND a better writing tool kit to carry forward in your writing career.
ENDORSEMENTS:
"Working with Jamie is a dream. Her comments on my MG manuscript let me see a whole new layer to my story. The questions she brought up are ones I hadn’t considered. Now I’m so excited to dive into the next stage of revisions! I know my book will be better because of her input."
Sidura Ludwig, Author of Swan
"Jamie has done multiple freelance editing jobs for me and has done excellent work each time. She communicated well, always met deadlines, provided suggestions to make my writing stronger, and did an excellent job copyediting. I highly recommend her!"
Stefanie Hohl, Publisher, Playful Learning Press
"Working with Jamie on my picture book biography about a ballerina was a breeze. Her critique was thorough. Her feedback was affirming and helped me understand and feel confident about my book. I had been working on this manuscript for a while and had some unresolved questions about certain parts of the story. Her insight gave words to what I was wrestling with and showed me how to make those parts work. I hope to work with Jamie on other manuscripts in the future!"
Laura Obuobi, Author of Kirkus Starred
Black Gold and Becoming a Ballerina: The Story of Michaela DePrince
"Jamie's detailed analysis of my 6th draft of MEMORABILIA was so deep that it inspired a new take on the stories I was telling. The book now has a point to make that drives its narrative. She has done a great turn by committing time and energy to ensuring the history of a black, female immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago is well documented. I am deeply appreciative of her talent."
Joanne Kilgour Dowdy, Author of Memorabilia
