Katie Heit – Editor

I am a children's book editor at Scholastic with 10 years of experience in picture book fiction/nonfiction and chapter book nonfiction.

Overview

I am a children's book editor with 9 years of experience working at publishing houses. I began my career at HarperCollins, where I spent 5 years before moving to Scholastic in 2019, and was named a Publishers Weekly Star Watch Honoree in 2023. I have worked with a number of incredibly talented authors, including Charles R. Smith Jr., Sandra Markle, Nell Cross Beckerman, Dean Robbins, Rekha S. Rajan, and many more.

I specialize in children's fiction and nonfiction for ages 4-10. I am skilled at providing developmental edits and line edits, as well as feedback on marketability and query letter reviews. My area of expertise is picture books (both fiction and nonfiction), as well as nonfiction chapter books. I love helping writers find and fine tune their voice!

Katie worked as an editor on two of my picture book stories and a query letter. She was very helpful by asking questions to get me thinking about ways to improve and ended up with asking if I had any follow-up questions. She was kind, helpful and professional.

Katie asked questions and made suggestions that led me to make major needed changes to my manuscript, and she was always kind, professional, and respectful. Whether answering questions or serving as a sounding board for ideas, she gave responses that were thoughtful and fully addressed my concerns. Overall, this collaboration was a great experience, and my story is better for it.

Katie was responsive, professional, and incredibly helpful. I truly felt like she was able to zero in on the heart of my manuscript, and help me make it stronger. Katie was available to answer follow-up questions, and thoughtful in her responses. She was very thorough in her critique and pointed out areas to ponder in a straight-forward, yet supportive way. I highly recommend working with Katie...
