Jamie Lou

Jamie Lou – Editor

I work on memoir, self-help, business, mind/body/spirit, wellness, and literary nonfiction w/ Simon and Schuster, Wiley, Shambhala, + more.

Overview

I'm a Los Angeles-based developmental editor, ghostwriter, essayist, and story coach who's worked with Simon & Schuster, Wiley, Shambhala, Row House Publishing, Rise Books, and Spirit Bound Press. I've been a storyteller for 20+ years with 5+ years in book publishing. I'm also an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker with a keen eye for story in many genres.

I tell my clients that I "get in the book" with them. From the moment we start, we're in it together. My editing process is thorough yet encouraging. I find it's easier to dive deeper into a story when there is mutual trust and respect. But I don't let my authors play small. It takes a great deal of effort to write a book and I believe in making it the best it can be. Things I focus on during the developmental editing proces include: structure, theme, pacing, powerful storytelling, unique angles, publishing industry standards and needs, and making each book sing.

I also specialize in book proposal coaching, editing, and writing. If you have a nonfiction book, I can help you write an eye-catching proposal and query letter to get the attention of agents and publishers.

Testimonials:

"Jamie is a conscientious, meticulous, and compassionate editor. Her professionalism and collaborative spirit shine through consistently, making each assignment a pleasure for us and our authors. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to continue work with Jamie on future projects."

-Rebekah Borucki, Founder, Row House Publishing

"Writing a book, especially memoir, can be brutal. That's why you need a Jamie. While thick skin isn't a bad thing to have in this industry, with her, softness and vulnerability are allowed. Her genius suggestions are delivered with kindness and empathy and love. With her magical prompts and insights, she helped me uncover-and translate into prose- the true essence of my story. The world needs more like her, helping us to write the revolution- with love up front."

Working with Jamie has been a genuinely growth-oriented experience. I appreciate her ability to see beneath the surface of my writing and lovingly challenge me to engage with my story in a much deeper and truer way. She helped me destabilize what was no longer true, before I was even aware of it....
