Gemma Steward

Gemma Steward – Designer

Designer with 20+ years experience in children's book publishing. B/g in novelty, recent projects have been non-fiction.

Overview

I have worked on a variety of different formats including activity books and kits, novelty (flaps, plush, pop-ups, wheels) and picture books. More recently I have worked within non-fiction as a designer on a series of Lift-the flap books. I have now completed over 40 titles across this range. I have also worked on several titles for an educational publisher.

I have many years experience in briefing/commissioning illustrators and working closely with editors and agents. I take pride in creating design layouts with concise, informative briefs and I enjoy sharing ideas and developing projects with the talented illustrators, authors and editors I am given the opportunity to collaborate with.

I am a fast, creative problem solver and I have experience of working to tight deadlines. I love to sketch out scamps as part of the briefing process, conducting picture research and balancing text with imagery in the very early stages so that ideas can be discussed, tweaked and refined before an illustrator is briefed. I am always on hand for further direction and guidance once a brief is delivered. Once colour artwork is received, I am adept at making necessary adjustments, with the ability to mimic many art styles for alterations. I have a good attention to detail for creating Acrobat print ready files with knowledge of also how to supply dielines or any secondary processes.

I am fully set up in my home studio but I live a commutable distance to London for hybrid roles, part-time in-house cover or one-off meetings.

Work experience

Self-employed

Feb, 2009 — Present
I have worked on many different formats and children's genres over the years, both as a designer and as an illustrator. I've also created illustrations for the greetings card market. For the last 8 years I have worked as a designer on a series of non-fiction Lift-the flap books. I have now completed over 40 titles across this range, the most recent series being a set of 6 Atlases covering the 7 continents. Other sub-series of these Lift-the flaps have covered a multitude of non-fiction areas such as Wellbeing and Early years experiences (starting school, visiting the dentist/doctors), Natural History, Science and Technology.  For the last 3 years, I have also been working with an educational publisher on a series of History titles (Sharks, Cats and Food), a collaboration with Mencap and currently a Wildlife title in association with The Natural History Museum.

The Book Studio (Penguin Group)

May, 2007 — Feb, 2009 (almost 2 years)
Working on multiple projects from conception through to repro, I was responsible for initial design ideas, sales material, briefing/commissioning, final design/layout and schedule maintenance. The company produced novelty books and kits for children and I was predominantly associated with pre-school product and stationary.

The Book Studio

Oct, 2004 — May, 2007 (over 2 years)
Joining the company as a junior designer fresh from graduating from my BA, I was very fortunate to learn skills and gain valuable experience, watching the company grow from a small independent publisher to a much bigger operation.

Chrysalis Children's Books

Aug, 2002 — Apr, 2003 (9 months)
I undertook the role at Chrysalis as an industrial placement for the third year of my bachelors degree. Whilst predominantly based within the design department, I was also given the opportunity to experience other departments including editorial, marketing and sales. The experience was extremely beneficial in understanding the entire publishing house and it cemented my decision to pursue a design career within children’s publishing.
