Lauren Finger – Editor

Commercial fiction editor & coach. In-house & freelance for many publishers in Australia, US, UK & with lots of indie authors for 20+ years.

Overview

PLEASE NOTE: AVAILABLE FOR BOOK COACHING ONLY FROM JANUARY 2026.

I'm a very experienced editor with an excellent reputation in trade publishing, including digital publishing. I have worked in-house for Bookouture, a digital publisher of commercial fiction, and before that the more traditional and literary houses, Atlantic Books and Allen & Unwin. I have worked with first-time authors through to high-profile and professional writers.

COACHING

As a fiction coach, I can help you achieve your writing goals with bespoke, regular intensive help. This might involve editing as well and then working on re-writes together, or it might be that you have other goals you want to attain, or someone to be accountable to. Get in touch to discuss how I can help.

EDITING - UNAVAILABLE UNTIL MAY 2026

As an editor, I am available for assessments, developmental editing and copyediting of commercial fiction.

So if you have written an entertaining and gripping novel, whether it be historical fiction, women's fiction, crime, thriller or romance, get in touch to see how I can help.

My job is to make your manuscript the best manuscript it can be. I love what I do, and I'm good at it! I have empathy and imagination, a dry sense of humour, I'm kind and communicative, give honest and constructive advice, and will work with you to help you take your manuscript where you want it to go; whether that is to a small group of people, or the world.

Lauren provided a professional line edit to my manuscript and provided several pages of developmental notes. Her line edits improved the prose of my novel and her developmental insights have given me things to consider. She has offered to be of continued support, which is certainly above and beyo...

Lauren did an excellent job copy/line editing my novel. She made herself available for follow-up discussions if I needed it but her comments and corrections made perfect sense so I didn't need to. However, it was reassuring to know I could contact her if needed. The project was finished on time.

What advice would you give your younger self at the start of your editing career?

That you know more than you think you do. But other editors' advice is worth its weight in gold.

What have you found most helpful in building your client base as a freelancer?

If you have connections in the areas you want to work then you need to use these contacts well. Tell people when you are starting out, tell them when you are looking for new work, and ask for referrals. Word of mouth, for me, is absolutely the best way to get work and grow my client list. Howeve...

What style guides do you primarily work with?

I have a deep and abiding love for the Chicago Manual of Style, despite being an Australian editor who has worked mostly in Australian and UK English during my career (though I do work on American texts too). The CMOS is so sensible, reasonable and gives excellent examples, and its online search ...
