Emma Hargrave – Editor

In tune with authors, readers and the written word’s rare power, my editorial energy creates contemporary texts that resonate with meaning.

Overview

As a publisher and editor, I have extensive project management expertise and a keen eye for detail - whether as initial editorial feedback, structural edit, copy edit or proofread. Using strong organisational skills, creative intelligence and a passion for excellence, I deliver high-quality, complex initiatives to budget and on time. Dedicated and resourceful, I take pride in my commitment to equality, partnership working and cultural engagement. With over two decades of wide-ranging publishing experience, I bring professional insight and good judgement to projects as various as short story anthologies to narrative non-fiction, photographic lifestyle titles to sporting autobiographies, plus children's fiction for ages from three to young adult. A recent highlight includes working on My Name’5 Doddie, the ‘lucid, brave’ and hugely popular autobiography of Doddie Weir, a true giant of Scottish rugby and tireless MND campaigner.

Work experience

Black & White Publishing

Dec, 2017 — Dec, 2021 (about 4 years)

At one of Scotland’s leading independents, my role was to:
• Liaise with authors, team members and designers, managing relationships and prioritising demands and workloads within tight timeframes to deliver books of impeccable quality.
• Work with production and design colleagues to create visually appealing titles, whether full-colour hardbacks with photographic elements or strikingly typeset paperback novels.
• Realise sales, marketing and PR potential. I wrote copy pitched for press releases, and created innovative cover blurbs and straplines absolutely to brief.
