Eleanor (Ellie) Andrews

Eleanor (Ellie) Andrews – Editor

Academic (social science) editor for 10 years, including for AAAS. 100s of citations. Former writing instructor/consultant at Cornell.

Overview

I edit academic work across social sciences (anthropology, geography, history): 300+ theses, dissertations, and journal articles by native and non-native English speakers. For seven years, I've been a freelance contractor for AAAS (publisher of Science journal). I have reviewed manuscripts for a dozen other journals and served as associate editor for the Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences. (And I occasionally edit some zany stuff, like the memoir of Klingon General Martok!) My own published research has been cited 230+ times, in journals including the Journal of Historical Geography, Water Resources Research, Journal of Political Ecology, and the invitation-only WIREs Water (forthcoming). At Cornell, I won the university-wide Buttrick-Crippen award for teaching writing and trained fellow instructors at the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines.

I love working with social scientists to convey their ideas with elegance and clarity — and get their research published! That might mean big-picture work: organizing your ideas more logically or helping you construct a narrative so you're telling a memorable story rather than just giving a report. It can also mean the smaller things: getting citations right, cutting fluff, making sure every word is doing work for you. I typically suggest lots of changes and leave lots of comments, erring on the side of too thorough rather than not thorough enough. But your voice is always preserved. If you want to work together, send me a sample or your whole manuscript and I'll give you a per-word rate, so the fee is clear up front. We'll agree on your overall goals and a timeline, and take it from there!

Testimonials:

"Ellie respected my authorial style throughout the revisions and offered options that empowered me as a writer. I will definitively enlist Ellie's help again in all kinds of writing projects!" (Fernando Galeana Rodriguez, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Integrative Conservation, College of William & Mary)

"Ellie's editing strengthened my paper so much! Ellie was able to communicate many complex processes in a friendly, educated (academic), and professional way. She was also super serious about the deadline we defined." (José Antonio Casis, Planning and Performance Lead, Commission for Environmental Cooperation)

"Ellie caters to the writer's needs. On a quite long piece, she worked to make writing more concise. On a shorter manuscript, her deep knowledge of grammar, citation conventions, and capacity to copy edit (quickly!) were essential. I hope to continue to rely on her throughout my career." (Justine Lindemann, Associate Professor in Community Development and Resilience and co-director, Center for Economic and Community Development, Penn State)
