Driss Chaoui

Driss Chaoui – Designer

Award-winning illustrator who believes in colourful designs for all genres.

Overview

Colours and lettering enthusiast living with a cat roommate. My goal is to capture the essence of a story and create an impactful long-lasting piece of art that sells.

I studied at Axe Sud École Condé and I graduated with a master in graphic design and art direction. I then worked as a designer for various companies before dedicating myself to illustration full-time. I collaborated with international clients, including kid magazines, literary and poetry journals, publishers and indie authors.

Design is a collaborative process and I make it a point to include my clients at every stage of the creative process. Through my expertise, I can guide you to take the best decisions to enhance your story and catch your audience’s attention.

A typical collaboration starts with a one-hearty conversation on your story, your characters and your expectations. Please tell me all about the quirkiest details because I, myself, am obsessed with these kind of informations.

Once we discuss the deadlines and all technical details, you will be updated with a rough sketch, and then a cleaner linework and a colour test. By this point, most of our creative decisions would be set. Of course minor tweaks can still be operated once the final artwork is delivered.

By the end, you’ll have a unique eye-catching artwork to present to your audience.

Projects are drawn by hand using digital tools. I mostly create lettering myself, resulting in more unique pieces.

My services include illustration, book covers, and lettering. I also assist on interior designs.

There isn’t enough room to say all I’d like to about Driss. First of all, his work ethic is right out of the history pages. I’ve not received this kind of customer service in many years. He went way beyond the call of duty. We had some computer glitches (all my fault) where docs wouldn’t go t...

My Guy Quackenbush series so far includes 5 books. Driss has been there with me from the beginning creating a beautiful, cohesive cover for each book. And his patience and commitment to a well thought out formatting of these books is incredible. Thanks, Driss, as always! Let’s press on to #6!

How do you best work with clients to capture their vision for their book cover?

My first question after talking about the lore is, is there something my client specifically wants to see appear on the cover, and most importantly, don't want to see at all. This is usually very insightful, even if the answer is "nothing", as it helps me read between the lines of the brief and u...

How do you ensure a book cover is effective as a thumbnail for online stores like Amazon?

Zooming, unzooming, squinting, leaving the desk and coming back with fresh eyes 10 minutes later. This is part of the normal design process. A good composition and a striking colour palette go a long way to ensure your cover will stand out, even from afar. The title usually occupies about a thi...

What criteria should authors consider when selecting an illustrator whose style and approach align with their story's tone and themes?

First, the illustrator's portfolio should display a consistent style. It's important that you, the author, get an upfront idea of what you're getting from the collaboration. To make things easier for you, try moodboarding beforehand. Browse your own book collection, Pinterest, or your local libr...
